  1. Not me. I'd definitely need more. Maybe the 1st pick in the 2nd round, but definitely not some mid-2nd rounder. I'd have to get a 2008 pick thrown in. You have to consider the market, the Bears have to find a team that 1) Needs a WILL linebacker(or MLB, he could defineltly slide over) 2) Will pay 6+ million for one(Briggs expected contract demands) 3) Will pay this money for a LB with marginal pass rush skills 4) Will be willing to give up a high draft pick If Briggs was still under contract for few more years a trade would be easier. Or 5) Keep a player that's far more valuable than a 2nd round pick.
  2. At this point I don't even want him back next season. I empathized with his situation going into the offseason, but so far he's handled it without class. If I publicly roasted my employer like that, I'd get fired. I don't see the point in talking about how this would work at our jobs. Briggs is doing this for a reason. He wants the Bears to just let him go. He wants the fans to let him go, because that would help him the most. It would not be what is best for the Bears, however. Giving him away would simply vindicate Briggs' outbursts. It would be giving in to his demands and would just cause more players to try it.
  3. I enjoyed Todd while he was here, but his best days are behind him and I don't see any point in bringing him back at 34 to see if he can help. The Cubs could use some offensive help, but Todd is no guarantee to be of use with the bat.

  5. I'm really getting annoyed at the media talking about the franchise tag like it's a bad thing that is unfair. First off, it was agreed upon in negotiation. Second of all, it gives a player significant guaranteed money, and a chance to hit free agency again in one year. If a guy ends up having a great career, he can actually make more with the franchise system than otherwise. The only ones who are hurt are the guys who get hurt and can't come back. But even those guys would be in similar boats with or without the system, because if they get hurt to the point of being worthless, teams will negotiate injury settlements and they won't see all of that big contract. I understand why a player would prefer to sign taht contract now instead of later, but there is nothing unfair about the system. Guys get paid for performance in the NFL, it's the ultimate in fair pay for sports.
  6. Some of the managers that are returning and all of the managers not returning did not set keeper rosters. I was talking to cbs to get them restored so that new managers could come in, set the keepers and we could proceed with a draft. But cbs came back and told me that they couldn't restore the rosters because the roster file was corrupt. So I'm recreating them as we speak. I've got them half done. Ohhhhhhhhh. So those of us who did set keepers and release others are in the clear?
  7. Not necessarily. Guys have been in the middle of the season and had issues with their throwing motion being in disarray.
  8. Peter King's take: Wait, what? The thing you like about it is "let's say the Bears are 2-4"? First off, trading Briggs midseason is going to make it very difficult for some other team to sign him with the guaranteed money he wants. Teams will be much closer to the salary cap by then. Second of all, what's the point of even forecasting the Bears at 2-4? Unless the Bears start with their 6 toughest road games it's going to be very difficult for them to open 2-4. Third, why is that the thing you like about it? Are you hoping the Bears start out 2-4? I mean, I know you teamed up with Dr. Z this year and openly rooted against them while pimping up New Orleans and the NFC East, but geez man, hold it in a little.
  9. Let's face it, an OF of Soriano, Murton and Jones gives us a better chance of winning than Soriano, Pie, Murton does. I have no problem with keeping Jones here. The only thing needed is a platoon partner for him against lefties and we're set. I think having DeRosa start against lefties in the OF and move Theriot to 2B would be a good move. Jones started out terribly but finished with decent stats last year. He needs to take a few more walks and cut down the K's but his production is fine for this team. I don't know about fine. If the Cubs want to be great (and they should) then production like they get from Jones isn't good enough. Jones' expected production range varies from bad to okay. Personally I'm not fine with okay from 30-something veterans, especially not corner guys. Jones has to be at the absolute top of his game to be an asset to this team this year.
  10. Yes. The Bears don't have to get rid of any of those guys in order to keep the team together.
  11. I'm confused. What was wrong with the rosters in the first place?
  12. Lou sure has done a ton of press since taking the Cubs jobs. He's been featured multiple times in all the NY papers, and has even been on the local radio. He's been interviewed on radio, tv and print repeatedly since spring training began.
  13. Yea, yea.. I noticed that after I posted. At least I was consistant and used the improper spelling everytime ;) Well good marks for consistency then.
  14. Wrong? Hendry did a terrible job at constructing a team that lost 90+ games, how were people critical of his moves wrong? They were wrong about Jones. Stick to the subject. Jones hasn't fulfilled his contract yet. You are the one who decided to include criticism of Hendry under things people were wrong about. Those who were critical have proven to be much closer to right than those who have praised his moves. You are also stretching the truth a bit by suggesting people thought Jones would be as bad as Hundley. Jones ended up a little better than I thought, but still not anything to write home about. His performance was within the range of expectations, albeit on the topside. He could easily prove to be much worse in 2007 and 2008. Jason Marquis has shown he can be god awful or halfway decent. People who aren't expecting much out of him aren't wrong for not expecting much.

  16. Can you explain the difference between seeing and watching games? You can see a game by just showing up or turning on the TV. But to truly appreciate it, and really understand the poetry in motion, you must watch.
  17. In any one game, no. But over the course of a season in which an ace could theoretically start 35-36 times if he goes every 5 days, regardless of off days, perhaps. Personally I'd rather see the Cubs keep Zambrano on normal rest early, but limit his pitch count early as well. I don't want them thinking 130 pitches would be fine since he's getting a little extra rest anyway.
  18. He was barely above average offensively. Even if the doomsday predictors said he would be below average, they had more evidence to say that than people had evidence to say he would be good. The point is that both of these bad ballplayers didn't deserve their contracts and Marquis more specifically doesn't deserve his rotation spot over someone like Guzman or Marshall, especially at 7 mil a season. You're making my point. The guy who many thought was absolute garbage actually turns out to be above average. Even despite the reams of statistical evidence (allegedly) suggesting otherwise. Could Marquis follow the same path? Sure seems plausible to me. Yet the doomsday predictors aren't really allowing for this possibility. For them, the jury's already in -- Marquis is trash, Hendry's an idiot, the contract's insane, blah blah blah. These folks really ought to learn from recent history not to jump to conclusions so quickly. So after 1 slightly above average seasons by Jacque Jones you feel comfortable coming to the conclusion that he's good?
  19. I think he'll play for the Bears. He's done the Bears no favors as far as helping with trade value, so I think the Bears will call his bluff. I think he'll sign a longterm deal. The Bears have made offers in the past. They can afford him. Barring some white knight team coming in and knocking his socks off, and giving something to the Bears, I think Briggs will be signed longterm by the deadline. He sounds pretty desperate with all his ranting and ravings, but the fact is he hasn't much a ton of money as a pro athlete yet, and I'm guessing he's itching to sign something with high guarantees.
  20. Briggs sounds like such an idiot. I think we're in a situation where he realizes he's overplayed his hand and doesn't have many options, and is now just trying to get the longterm offer from Angelo. I hope Jerry plays hardball as long as possible, there's really nothing to lose if Briggs misses all of training camp and preseason. And hopefully he ends up offering a longterm deal a little higher than the one Briggs turned down, so he can save face and come to terms. Lance should find a team that is willing to offer up the big money and make a good trade if he thinks he deserves more. The bottom line is the Bears haven't done anything wrong yet.
  21. I'm not sure he's much of a hitter anymore either.
  22. First Federer loses, and now this.... :) Bruce tends to struggle on the clay courts.
  23. I'll never understand how Hendry could justify going into 2005 with the OF he had, which pretty much guaranteed Burnitz would get a ton of playing time. He was, uh, hamstrung by the sosa situation. Which is why we had to have Burnitz instead of Beltran. Or something like that. Yeah but we had this dude named Matt Murton who could have used some more starts but Dusty just had to play Burnie damn near every day. It was like Burnie was some indispensable superstar and not a washed up geezer who wasn't going to be on the team the next season. No way did he need or deserve to get 155 starts. That was much more about the worthless bums he kept trotting out in LF than Burnitz.
  24. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp?id=289343 By Bruce Miles Daily Herald Sports Writer Posted Saturday, March 10, 2007 MESA, Ariz. — Lou Piniella put a quick end to all of the speculation Friday when he confirmed that pitcher Rich Hill and utility infielder Ryan Theriot have made the team. Period. End of story. “He’s in our rotation,” Piniella said of Hill. “I like the way he goes about his business. He’s serious. He’s got good mound presence. And he’s getting better and better.”
