  1. I guess that will end the Jeff Garcia signing with Tampa rumors. Well according to the NFL Network, Plummer has retired in lieu of being traded to Tampa. So not only is there no deal, but those rumors of Garcia to Tampa are probably back on. I wonder why? TB isn't that bad of a team or area is it? They had a massive crackdown at area strip clubs a few years ago, most notably world famous Mons Venus. Maybe he's never forgiven them.
  2. Maybe they wouldn't be interested in what the Cubs are offering and would be interested in somebody else's offer. I was just pointing out that opting out of his deal gives ARod the biggest freedom, without too much of a risk of throwing away money.
  3. I would trade him for a first and a third. As long as they got someting very substantial, I wouldn't be that upset.
  4. If ARod goes out and repeats one of his best seasons this year, I think he could surpass $20m. That kind of production dwarfs Soriano. The no-trade clause will help him prevent a trade to a team he doesn't like. But it doesn't give him full control of where he wants to go. If he wants to go to the Cubs, but the Yankees don't want to trade him there, he's in a bind. Opting out gives him complete freedom.
  5. Well after 2007 he's owed 3/81. I think he could get a 5-6 year deal worth 100-120, so there would be value there. Plus, by opting out, he controls where he goes, as opposed to the Yankees controlling it.
  6. I agree, but I think it works a little differently. What they fail to do is recognize the damage of the caught stealing. So instead of overvaluing the SB, they undervalue the CS. You never hear about SB%, what you hear is "This guy can steal you 40-50 bases". It's similar to how they talk about pitchers. A 15-16 pitcher means you are "a 15 game winner", while a 10-2 record means you aren't a "15 game winner". Baseball people think in terms of counting stats, and ignore the rates far too often.
  7. I don't think it's that ridiculous. He hates it in NY and NY hates him. People are saying the right thing, for now, but the Yankees would absolutely move him if they got value, and he'd absolutely accept a trade to the right situation.
  8. He turns 32 this season, so age is definitely a concern. However, I think he would be fine at SS for another 2-3 years, and fairly productive with the bat for 5-6. His best years, with a 167 OPS+ probably won't return, but I could see him being a solid 135-140 OPS+ for quite a while. ARod's game is based on patience and power, two things that tend to last for quite a while. since he is that old, how long can he last at ss? aram already has 3B solidified, as does derrek lee at 1b if that's a possible position for arod. can arod play 2b? I wrote that I think he could play SS for 2-3 more years without defense hurting the team. Then I think he could slide over to 2B if that's where he's needed, although I think he's more than athletic enough to handle a move to 1B or LF.
  9. I don't see how. Unless you define alright much differently than I do.

  11. The whole premise is based upon guys who signed huge contracts this offseason.
  12. I'm not trying to kill your buzz, just dreaming up realistic possibilities for getting ARod on board. I've been trying to think of ways to get him here since '99. I just pictured you as JD on Scrubs going into a daydream at work thinking about this. If Z is not going to sign a 3 year or more deal I'd still look into trading him to the Yanks for ARod before opening day as long as ARod agrees on a long term with the Cubs. I'd probably do it with or without the agreement. Odds are once he's here, the Cubs can convince him to stay.
  13. If by slimfast cans you mean prostitutes and by hot fudge you mean........ oh nevermind.

  15. I agree. A big 4 of Soriano, Lee, Ramirez and Rodriguez would give you tremendous leeway for the rest of the lineup. I'd say Murton, Patterson/Theriot, Pie and Fox (or some other minor league catcher) would would be perfectly fine in the rest of the lineup. The key is offloading guys like Jones and DeRosa, and probably at least one of Marquis/Lilly.
  16. i think A-Rod has made Boras enough money that Rodriguez can tell him where to stick it. And I also think that A-Rod is a caliber of player that the team would just find the money to pay. If you were the front office, would you ever say "Sorry, A-Rod just doesn't fit in our budget"? Most front offices have already said that.
  17. sign him soriano murton arod lee ramirez barrett who cares who cares To fit Soriano, Arod, Lee and Ramirez into the same payroll, while still employing a pitching staff, gusy like Jones and Barrett will have to be gone. They'd have to go with affordable guys at multiple positions, like Murton, Pie and Patterson. And they'd probably have to find a minimum wage catcher to work in with Blanco.
  18. I believe more than well enough to still be an enormous asset to the team.
  19. He's supposed to be making $27m per year for 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. After 2007, he'll have a 3/81 guarantee remaining. If he voids the deal, I would assume he'd be expecting 5/100 at a minimum. I can't imagine the Cubs have space for that without some serious attrition of current contracts.
  20. Am I the only one who doesn't understand what the point of including this note was? Cart blanche Special assistant to the general manager Gary Hughes spent much of the last couple of weeks driving around from field to field on a golf cart with instructions printed on the front: "Do Not Steal, Maim or Mutilate Gary or the golf cart." Hughes related a story of a recent conversation with Bill Murray, the No. 1 celebrity Cubs fan, who invited him to play golf. "There's something on my golf cart I want you to see," the Wilmette native told Hughes. "I think you'll really like it." "What's that?" Hughes asked. "Cupholders," Murray replied.
  21. I don't understand why this is so difficult for people to understand. It's a Page 2 article, poking fun at the GMs that through money around for all sorts of guys this offseason. It's not about the Cubs.
  22. solid potential with Hardy, Weeks, Hart, Fielder, and to a lesser extent Braun. Probable top 5 pitching staff in the NL (definite if Sheets stays healthy). Not a whole lot of down side. Only definitively weak position will be one of the corner OF spots with Jenkins/Mench probably struggling to provide league average production. Weeks and Hardy are still question marks. Weeks just needs to stay healthy and he'll be league average at worst, and significantly above average at best. Hardy has a whole lot more work to do. I see some serious downside risk at SS, C and 3B. Yeah, they have a lot of potential with young guys, but probably not one single great hitter, or even great for his position hitter. We're talking about a team that barely scored more than the Cubs last season. It'll take a great deal of internal improvement to substantially climb that list. They'd probably need a 2005 White Sox or 2006 Detroit perfect storm of pitching fortune to really turn around last year's results. I could see where the excitement is coming from though.
  23. 25-29 is the wide range of peaks years, 27 is the average peak year. 28-32 is generally post peak.
  24. Well, I am just trying to state the case that perhaps this was more about Clayton saying teams with QB issues should not pass on Quinn. I'm not advocating the Lions go one way or the other. 1) I said you don't have to throw him out there right away. Kitna is fine, as long as you're developing somebody behind him. It's not very smart to stick with Kitna as your starter with no real prospect behind him. 2) If no team is years from contending, explains the Lions. The Jets were no better in 2006 than they were in 2004. They were bad in 2005 because Chad was gone. The NFL system makes it possible for teams to improve in a couple years, but it's not simple. And Detroit is nowhere near ready. They suck top to bottom. 3) It's not that hard to build a competent line without #1 picks. I've heard Detroit is fine keeping their QBs as is, and I think that's nuts.
