  1. Can't you just count the time it takes from his release point to the catcher's mitt and then do the math to calculate?
  2. I thought he said that Prior will be followed by Wood who will be working out of the bullpen this year. Nope, he said, "Prior, they think, will be working out of the bullpen this year."
  3. Seattle leadoff hitter doubled to right and was thrown out stretching it to 3.
  4. This announcer is truly terrible. I'm sure he's a legend amongst baseball people, but he's been wrong about just about every Cubs fact so far.
  5. Lou is just keeping everybody on their toes huh.
  6. I'm almost certain ARod will be on a team other than the Yankees in 2008. Maybe the Cubs aren't the likeliest destination, but I don't know of another team that clearly has a more realistic shot.
  7. http://cubs.mlb.com/mediacenter/index.jsp#20070305 why thank you. nice, if true. yesterday there was no evidence of video coverage on that schedule. Yup, that's what I'm talking about. This could be a bait and switch deal. If anyone wants to buy it they can wait until I see if there's really video... I think it would be pretty odd for them to pull a bait and switch with this spring training game. How many people could they possibly sucker in? 20, 50, 100? The total number of MLBTV subscribers is pretty low, which means the number of Cubs fans are pretty low, and the number willing to sign up on any given day all that much lower. I wouldn't put it past MLB, given their "screw the fan" mentality. But there just isn't any realistic benefit.
  8. Without him opting out? I guess the only way I could see that happening is if those three teams do pull off a 3-way trade, and the Cubs and Yankees kick in some cash to entice Texas. The Rangers best case scenario is ARod opting out. The Yankees want to keep ARod without opting out, or trade him for value. Theoretically, the Cubs would have to decide whether they want to trade for him, or wait and hope to just sign him next year. I really don't see any realistic way in which the Rangers get out from what they owe without ARod opting out.
  9. Wow. I didn't think the 1st lineup could get worse. I was very, very wrong. Any Cubs lineup where Murton is the best candidate for the 3 hitter is going to be pretty scary.

  11. It's completely misleading to talk about rating a starting lineup when speed and defense apparantly make up so much of the rankings. This is a pretty worthless ranking.
  12. I'd have to guess Williams and Wilson would compete with a draftee for the job. What about Leon Joe, or Ayanbadejo? I think they'd be looking for a young guy to emerge. Ayanbadejo is 30 already, and probably locked in as a special teamer. Leon Joe is still pretty young, but he was drafted at the outset of the Lovie era, and already waived once by the team (and another time by Arizona). I just think he's thought of as more of a special teamer as well, as opposed to Briggs' heir apparant. Williams and Wilson are more recent draft picks, presumably drafts that had a little more input from Lovie and his staff. I'm just assuming they are more likely candidates. Although obviously there is no clear cut favorite. And it's really hard for a fan to really gauge pro football prospects when all they do is practice.
  13. I'd have to guess Williams and Wilson would compete with a draftee for the job.
  14. He was exactly what I thought he was.
  15. I realize that, but when it comes to the Cubs, they have a tendency to humble the best dog in the lot. Without any experience employing the "best dog" it's hard to know if that's true.
  16. The reference to Briggs being "distressed" about the departure of Rivera doesn't really mean he's upset. I think it's just ammunition he could use when trying to complain about the Bears. I really don't think many people are upset, except for Rivera, who wanted out, but with the hopes of getting at least more money. Briggs might be a little upset that the Bears didn't "take care of one of their own", but only because it reflects on their willingness to reward their own people.
  17. I noticed how that quote seemed to miss the Tribune, but showed up in the Herald... :) It's like Bruce takes Lou to the side and says, "Now that they are gone, give me an intelligent answer."
  18. The fact that runs are low doesn't prove that the emphasis is to the detriment of the players. It's a detriment to the minor league teams' ability to score runs. But that's meaningless. It's only a detriment if it causes some "should be" major leaguers to completely flame out. But you'd never be able to prove that.
  19. The thing about "Urlacher money" is that Urlacher signed that contract prior to 2003, without the benefit of free agency. It was a franchise record, but since then, the salary cap has skyrocketed, and therefore, salaries have skyrocketed. The market is paying so much more for players. In other words, a player who is a lesser player than Urlacher could still expect to sign a contract in 2007 that is as big as Urlacher's contract. It's not outlandish. I think a side issue is a concern by the Bears that Urlacher will want some sort of renegotiation if Briggs gets the same amount. But he really doesn't have much to stand on, given he is signed through 2011.
  20. I can believe that. I think it's about whether or not the Bears offer a longterm deal. I think Briggs did a really brave thing in playing out his last contract to the fullest. He feels he did the Bears a favor by playing like a $5+ million player while getting paid a whole lot less. Compare that to somebody like John Abraham, who pretty much did the bare minimum so as to not risk injury before his big payday. Briggs probably could have eased off the gas pedal and been in a better financial situation now than he currrently is. The Bears may not have franchised him, but other teams would still show great interest, enough to garner him a very large contract.
  21. The Bears tried, he was unreasonable. They were reportedly close last year. I'm talking about this year though. If the Bears tag him, and refuse to talk about anything other than a 1 year deal, then he has a legit beef.
  22. How are you so certain? If, after 2007 he and his agent believe he could sign a new deal that guarantees him more than what he is guaranteed on the last three years on his contract, he'd be stupid not to opt-out. And he could very well surpass what remains. What does it mean to "show real interest in opting out"? It doesn't do the player much good to talk about it long before it happens. Ramirez didn't really show much interest, Drew didn't talk about it all the time. Given that Texas owes ARod many millions, they will want him to opt out. What they should think about is negotiating a settlement with ARod that guarantees him a portion of the money they still owe him, offsetting what ARod would be giving up.
  23. Did you read the artice? Don't know what to make of that. Could just be negotiating tough talk. I see his point if the Bears refuse to discuss a longterm contract. And I'm a bit upset with the Bears if they truly are refusing to discuss longterm deals. However, the Bears have to do what is best for them, and franchising Briggs is clearly what's best. Rescinding it is not an option. If Briggs wants the Bears to trade him, it is probably up to him and his agent to find a deal. It doesn't really do the Bears much good to go out looking for a trade. Given how inactive they look to be this free agent period, I'm for signing him longterm, and hopefully, that's exactly what they end up doing.
  24. I think it's a lack of security thing. For example, if Briggs were to tear up his knee this year, the Bears wouldn't franchise him again, and his open market value would probably take a big hit. ah, good point. I guess when you get franchised multiple years in a row, like Walter Jones was doing for a while, you have to perform at a top level and stay healthy year after year. The thing with Briggs is, he really rolled the dice the past two years, making fairly little (~$400,000). He passed up the opportunity to sign a fairly large longterm deal, clearly holding out for something that would give him a ~$15m signing bonus, which is twice what he's now guaranteed. I could see being pissed about getting only $7m and having to roll the dice again that he'll play a full healthy season.
  25. DLee has better numbers than ARam? and close to ARod? One season, sure. Let's see if he ever does that again. I sure hope so, but for the most part, those statements are inaccurate. Plus, there are 4 more years until Lee's contract runs out. I'd probably be content to let him walk by then, unless he's signing for relatively cheap. He'll be 35 when his next contract starts.
