  1. Yeah, Aram is great...but life goes on. Blow up the team? I think they've already imploded on their own. There's no need for more explosives.
  2. Now yer talking. I would say an even better example would be actually buying the best tv/dvd, and then not extending enough cash to pay the friggin electric bill. Hence Neifi, Glendon, Freddie "Boom Boom", Pagan, Jody Gerut...blah blah blah. If they don't sign Aramis, their chances of winning next year and beyond are 10,000 % less than now. Period...
  3. This signing of Sheff to an extension was obviously risky, but these are the chances and gambles that good teams know they have to make to better the odds for getting over the top. The Cubs could learn from the Tigers here...gambling involves risk. That's why I threw out the idea of Pie for Willis, and other minor leaguers obviously. It was just an idea, but if they don't do something miraculous to change the paradigm that the Cubs are losers forever, then history is doomed to repeat itself.
  4. Hey Soccer, I'm not arguing here, but I don't know that I buy the TV/DVD analogy. Hendry has lots of dollars at his disposal, that's number one. Number two, clearly he can shop well and buy himself additional players IN ADDITION to Aramis, even at 6/100 for him alone. I don't think he needs to make these choices like a team that say, maybe the Cardinals would have to do... If the Cubs are going to win, they are going to have to realize that they need to go after the big guns and forget the fact that maybe the payroll might go to 125 million or 140, rather than 115... I don't know...maybe yer right.
  5. Dream on. The Cubs are a cash cow for anyone that would eventually own the Tribune. The Cubs, I love them, but they are doomed forever...
  6. The fact that this whole episode with Aramis has gone on like this just epitomizes the abhorrent philosophy that Jim Hendry has. I so echo the fact that you mention the Red Sox are able to afford Manny...plus other players. It's just plain pathetic. But I will reserve my real complaining until tomorrow when the Cubs have lost out. I thought for sure they'd resign aramis, and I hope it happens, but I'm afraid that they will just be the Cubs...forever.
  7. Having Biggio get his 3000th somewhere else was like Santo playing a season with the White Sox before retiring. Biggio is a class act, played hard, and deserved a little over payment for what he did for them. We need a little more loyalty in the game like that which was displayed right here with the Astros.
  8. His fastball's not his best pitch. He throws five pitches...all for strikes, he's 26...and better than the options avail and discounting the posting fee, will be less of a risk because Boras will focus on a three year contract... I hope the Cubs win the bid.
  9. You guys haven't seen his stuff. All his stuff is plus kinda stuff... He's zambrano and more. Worth paying 25 million (which is off payroll btw) and a three year contract. Worth way more than Zito or Schmidt...and he's younger. I can't stand it any more...can someone fly to Tokyo please?
  10. I wish Steinbrenner would get run over by a bus
  11. Oh, and remember him mangling Mark Grudzielanek's name? that was probably the funniest I ever heard, I don't think he ever pronounced it the same way twice...
  12. Thank God, the Reds are changing theirs? Those vest-like sleeves are hideous...
  13. You are forgetting "Mello Carmelo Martinez".
  14. The more the Yankees pay of that contract, the more they get in the trade, isn't that the way it should work? If we pay all of sheff's contract, then they should get low grade prospects in return. I disagree that the Yankees are necessarily in the driver's seat here. Picking up his option is riskier than at first glance. I don't want the guy, he's a whiner.
  15. Just how much extra money do the Cubs have to spend? I'm not sure spending essentially up to 80 million (contract plus bid) would be worth it in the end. I'd rather have Padilla and maybe Ted Lilly...or Schmidt maybe. We don't need STELLAR starting pitching...if we can improve the offense. I think the Cards proved that. It just doesn't seem worth it to me.
  16. Aramis is staying right where he is. People will come to the Cubs convention with pitchforks if he doesn't re-sign him.
  17. I'm just guessing, but if someone leaks something like this, it's done on purpose...and purposefully BELOW what the bid really is. I'd guess the Cubs will bid way higher than that...way higher. Why bother if you don't intend on capturing the prize? This money doesn't count against the payroll, so where does it come from? Beer money? What?
  18. JH might be dumb...but he's not stupid...well, maybe. But Aramis will re-sign with the Cubs. Even Hendry realizes that the task becomes even MORE impossible to build a winner without proven run producers in his lineup. The bank will be opened for Aram. Like I said, I think it'll be in the range of 4 years/85 million, with an option for a 5th. Just guessing on that. But I will be stunned if Hendry decides not to give the guy what he has coming in the open market.
  19. Personally I think JH is just waiting for this week's org meetings to guage what Uncle Lou's opinion on Aramis is. If Lou gives the go ahead, then Hendry will call and work out that contract in 10 minutes. If Lou says, "Meh, I don't really want that lazy SOB.", then I think he lets him go and goes with other options...whatever those lame options are. He'll do something dumb then, like sign Nomar to play 3b, and then in the second game of the season he'll tear both his legs off at the hips running out a grounder.
  20. I think both USSoccer AND CubsWin are both right. But I also think the argument is over small potatoes. All these things relate to each other, and I know I'm preaching somewhat to the choir, as you guys know this stuff better than me. Without good SP, the team loses more games than it should...without good relieving, we lose games where the SP pitched well. Hendry has largely failed to bolster both of these, for reasons we've all discussed ad nauseum. Signing Eyre and Howry were clearly good moves, but for too much money (Goony's right about that 'reactive' thing). So those were NOT bad moves. But given what the Cubs budget is supposed to be (key word 'supposed'), then what we pay those guys is chump change. I for one am glad we have Howry and Eyre. The Cubs should CLEARLY focus on spending on offense and SP this year...the bullpen should always be a secondary consideration.
  21. Aramis stays. I think he gets 5 years/85 million, with an option for a sixth if he plays years four and five at say, 270 games. Just a guess. Jim H. cannot let Aramis get away, otherwise he may as well clean out his office. And he would NEVER survive the Cubs Convention without Secret Service protection.
  22. Hendry's had enough reclamation projects over the years (Miller and Dempster come to mind). I'd pass on both these guys...damaged goods. If he insists, then we sign wood to something resembling a shadow of what he got before ONLY if he shows a little loyalty to an organization that has spent enough on drugs, diagnostics, surgery, and treatment for him to break Blue Cross/Blue Shield into bankruptcy. We may as well have at least a shot at getting something for our investment.
  23. If he'd take a non guaranteed deal, and his bat speed is good, then why not a platoon with Jacque? Geez, what did I just say?
  24. Yeah, keeping on topic...it's hard enough to hide this stuff from the boss without wasting my time. Can we just sign Aramis for his friggin 16 million or so? He's clearly worth that in dollar terms due to this ridiculous market. Then we can finally turn our attention to getting Neifi back in a Cub uniform where he belongs.
  25. I'm an advocate of giving something up to get Dontrelle. He's accomplished more than Prior, he's healthier...it seems more people think it's heinous to sell off prior (as if we could trade him now anyway) than it is to give up a prospect (Pie) who may or may not pan out. Murton? I would hesitate more to give him up, since he might wind up the second coming of Palmeiro, who supposedly wasn't going to hit for (steriod induced) power.
