  1. I don't know much about the guy, that's why i'm asking, i am just looking at him on paper and it would seem a Theriot or someone could do the same thing leaving money for something else.
  2. I don't know about Figgins. I mean, he stole 52 bases but was caught 16 times...he seems too JuanPierrish to me. He has a little more pop (just a little b/c of 9 homers) but his slg% sucks... This is the kinda guy that we don't gain from getting in my opinion. We have a cheap alternative for a utility man in Pagan (not great either, and not an infielder i guess) and would Figgins even accept the demotion to this role? Does he play he outfield too?
  3. Willis might not be one of the TOP SP's, but he certainly is in the top tier of pitchers that we might be able to acquire. Who ever said that we had to get one of the best? He's a 20 game winner that isn't even 25 yet, and doesn't have any health problems, I think he would clearly be worth having for Pie and another pitcher or two, or some other combination.
  4. Okay, maybe so. I was just asking. However, offering Pie and Murton and a reliever. Then sign Soriano or CLee or something. Or K. Lofton. There are multiple scenarios. You are right, they probably dont have the talent. But they might...
  5. I'm sure he is just doing his Clemens imitation, to put himself MORE in demand after some of the other SP's sign. I'd take Pettitte in a heartbeat, but not for Zito money
  6. He did file for FA didn't he? I'm sure he did...
  7. He'd be stupid if he didnt' take that, and then go back to Atlanta.
  8. I think the Cubs should offer Pie and whoever else for Willis and sign him to a four or five year contract. Would this be a bad thing? The Fish need an outfielder don't they? And they don't want to pay his 8 million he'll get in arbitration.
  9. Now he has 25 million reasons not to go back to the Braves. They would NEVER have paid him that kind of money. This is just ridiculous, 25 million for a guy that's 40. I thought 8 million for Kenny Rogers wasn't bad...but 12.5? Geez...
  10. We'll never know the real story, the Cubs can contain a secret better than the NSA. It's simple: resign Aramis for up to 15mil, or our goose is cooked for the new World Series goal for next year...as if it wasn't already.
  11. for the kind of money he costs, I'd rather pay 10 million for Mussina, if he would switch leagues, which is doubtful.
  12. and even if you did sign him for three years, wouldn't he be a great fourth outfielder when Pie comes...or a platoon partner for Jones and/or Murton... I think he could fit in pretty well. I keep thinking about players that finally seem to hit their stride when 30, and Luis Gonzalez keeps coming to mind... Hell, Giles wasn't great until his later 20's, he was 27 or 28 before he really made an impact with the Pirates. I'm sure there are other examples. He's a gamble, but a cheap one that would fit in well in several roles in my opinion.
  13. Sarge Jr does hit for more power, at least he did this year. I just wonder if he would be a good gamble given that this year he hit .313 against lefties and righties, a little more power from the left side... Clearly he'd be better than Pierre and the money we pay him would be cheaper, thus allowing us to go after Soriano... One year wonder? Probably. Worth the gamble? Maybe...
  14. Awww, man...Woody to the Cardinals? That would be a nice kick in the teeth now wouldn't it?
  15. I'm just ASKING this, so don't jump all over me please...but would it be so bad to sign Sarge, Jr.? I remember Luis Gonzalez being a late bloomer as well. He was like 30 or something when he started driving in greater than 100 runs a year. He plays a great CF and he can be had for probably 7 million/per...just throwing it out there...
  16. Von Joshua, man...get Von... Or Chambliss...
  17. I think Soriano is a bad call. The exact thing the Cubs should try and stay away from is a guy at the top of the lineup that strikes out as much as he helps you. I'd prefer saving that money and using Theriot or Ray Durham at second and finding something else for CF. Signing CLee for left or Right due to his career .850 batting ave in Wrigley...he'd be cheaper and has better (though slightly so) plate discipline. I just don't like Soriano...he's a whiner like Sheffield is... Just my opinion. Love Schmidt...maybe a long shot for Zito...
  18. I wonder how often the "best" team in baseball (the team with the best record) wins it all? And the timely pitching disregards the Tigers poor approach at the plate...it was still timely pitching. You can't have too many pitchers. I'd take just one more hitter plus a healthy DLee...and stock stock stock up on pitching, because pitching dominates in the short playoffs... Get pitching...and we will be closer. And maybe one of these overwhelmed AA pitchers we used last year will learn from his mistakes and start putting the ball over the plate. I would heavily weight our acquisitions in the pitching department and stay the hell away from Soriano...for the money we'd have to pay him.
  19. I don't quite get what all the arguing is about here. It seems to me that the Cards won this because of a little timely hitting, some unexpected pitching, and a little luck cashing in on some poor fielding by the Tigers. In no way can there be any formula to this. This year was anomalous. Clearly the Braves had some great pitching over the years and yes that only netted them 1 WS win, but that's one more than the Cubs had over that stretch. So logic tells me that dominating pitching and great defense sets you up for the best chance to win. And I'll take the Braves formula over the Yankees formula any day. But mostly it's luck and injuries (or lack of) and someone stepping up that hasn't stepped up before. In the end, trying to figure out how to win is a little like poking a bowling ball with a plastic fork, it's almost an exercise in rediculousness.
  20. Come on! Look at the future...Glendon will lose 40 lbs, stop taking the anticoagulants for the pulmonary embolism (and also NOT die of a head bleed in the process)...and then he will carry us on his back next year with 25 wins... Right? Right? It is absolutely the worst time in history to be a Cubs fan...thank God the beer is still cold.
  21. would Sheffield be worth having, though? He'd never go for a platoon, he's too much of a prima donna for that. I'd way rather they spend the 13 million on something else. But then, I think that's obvious.
  22. Just curious how we should "know" that someone has a NTC? Are the contracts made public? If we didn't intend to TRADE Aramis, then how would we "know" that he had an NTC? I doubt there's any way we know exactly what goes on behind the scenes. And how is it the Dodgers would have given up anything close to "value" for Maddux? There's no way we'd get something of value for a 40 year old pitcher on his last legs. Am I missing something here?
  23. This is an easy one really, if we don't have Aramis, the task of winning becomes precipitously harder. The Cubs need to finally learn that they are going to have to overpay to keep...and to get...players that are established stars. Overpaying for guys like Zito...CLee...Soriano...etc, is just the way things are, and I hope they realize that the only way to win is to play that game. Kenny Rogers makes 8 million, and looks pretty worth it now...the same is true for Pudge...we could have had him too for the last three years. And both of those guys would have probably helped us win. Maybe not, but it's a risk that teams need to take in order to win.
  24. I don't think cheating is part of the game. It happens, and is punished when people are caught doing it. Good analogy with the speeding thing.
