  1. You are claiming that Baker's over use of pitchers is the reason the cubs sucked from 04 to 06? That's a little goofy to me. There are about 15 players that have to do with that...and a GM that's gambled too much on injured and weak rosters... The reason the cubs sucked was not because Dusty overused pitchers in 2003. I guess i'm the only one that thinks this.
  2. I just don't understand how it's "foolish head in the sand" thinking. Like I said, who wouldn't over use his best pitchers during a playoff race? That's not to say 140 pitches and then pitch on 3 days rest. I'm just making the argument that none of us would be thinking "Gee, I better take Z out of this game in late september when we could win the division because I might hurt him four years from now." During the Mets game Sat night the comment was made about the Mets bullpen having so much recent rest and Randolph's unwillingness to start using the bullpen early in the game. I think we can go overboard protecting pitchers.
  3. Again, I'll say "so what?". Pitchers get paid to pitch and if they have to go harder during a race, then do it... Wasting them for pointless reasons is another story. If the Cubs had more warriors like Roger Clemens and Rod Beck and a host of others, then they would have done better. Coddling pitchers is stupid if you are in a race to win. If you are in last place, then you end up on the garbage heap like Dusty. Remember Jim Riggleman took some responsibility for what happened to Wood in 98, but he also said he didn't feel like he had any choice at the time.
  4. Again, I'll make the argument that we can't prove...one way or another...that a manager's usage of a pitcher early in his career has any bearing on his future. Kerry Wood was injury prone PRIOR to 2003...Prior himself is anomalous, in that he had some freak injuries and then seemed to turn into a pansy. I don't advocate using Z for 120 odd pitches at the end of the season, but if the cubs were in the race and had a crappy bullpen (like they had in 2003), then ride him like there's no tomorrow. You disagree, Goony, I'm sure...but that's okay.
  5. I think we should talk baseball here and avoid the political stuff. I could make comments about CNN and MSNBC and CBS and all the other Drive-By media as much as any of you can take cheap shots at Fox News... I can go other places for the politics...or I can go to the Barber Shop. Lyons is an ignorant fool...along with Jimmy the Greek and Al Campanis... Leave it at that, so we can discuss how much the Cubs suck...there's plenty of fodder for that !
  6. You guys should be jumping for joy that Dusty has been replaced. Instead, most of you lament that Lou was hired and continue to be negative. I for one predict that Lou will not tolerate bad baseball and a few tantrums are what they need. The players they get will determine their success, but Lou CAN make them better. Jim Leyland is a fiery/grouchy manager, and you see what he got out of HIS team. Girardi and Bochy and all the other candidates people wanted, just didn't cut it at a time when they need someone to "win" now. I'll go on record as saying that Jim Hendry took a BIG risk hiring Uncle Lou...and it will pay off.
  7. I believe the Cubs HAVE fired the training staff recently, have they not? And the injury excuse is just that... All teams deal with injuries...the Cards and Yankees were pretty beat up this year. Nobody seemed to notice that they still made the playoffs I guess. I'd more blame the management than the training staff, most of the medical stuff is pretty well documented, so the management (Dusty and pals) over use or underutilize (whatever you want to call it) their players and mishandle themselves into things that are worse than they really should be. We all knew Nomar was injury prone anyway, Prior and Wood were gambles that never should have been taken and players should have been acquired to replace them, Lee was a fluke (we hope) and there was nobody that could come close to making up for him...and the Lee thing was an indictment of how poorly Hendry assembled the roster. None of these have to do with trainers...or Larry Rothschild...it all has to do with Dusty and Jim.
  8. Some of you guys wouldn't be happy no matter who Hendry picks, isn't that right? Some complain about Girardi or Piniella or Bochy or Brenly blah blah blah... The manager matters little, I keep saying that...but it's true, unless you are a guy named Leyland or Larussa...at least IMO...
  9. Yeah I would like to know that, too. It seems a lot of people hated Lou...and now just because it looks like he's the guy, it's a "if you can't beat em...join em" kinda attitude. I will say again that Lou is NOT a bad choice to manage the Cubs...he may even be a good one.
  10. Lou might be a safe choice, but I think we could do worse.
  11. Lou can't do any worse than Dusty did, given the roster and the injuries that he had. And this is NO endorsement of Dusty Baker. Teams suck because they acquire bad players, not bad managers.
  12. I don't see why this argument is occuring here. You both are right. Dusty isn't the great strategist. Dusty also lost a lot of his better players over the course of the last two seasons. He himself was to blame, and so was his circumstances. Had Dusty had better players, he would have been a better manager. Someone said that a manager doesn't make a team better, but he can make them worse. I tend to believe that Dusty does well when he has all the pieces, but not so well when things don't go his way.
  13. The "Lou" train is coming to town. They could do worse. It won't matter if they have the same sucky roster, anyway.
  14. If we were going to emulate the Tigers, we'd include a fiery manager along with that young pitching...like Lou Piniella? Just thought I'd stoke the coals of controversy on this cold thursday morn.
  15. I guess in the end I fail to see why Uncle Lou would be a poor choice to manage this rag tag pack of losers. He has a good track record and while you could beat me over the head with all these fancy statistics most of you guys like to use, I nevertheless feel we could do way worse than hire this guy...
  16. Can someone explain to me why Uncle Lou would be so horrible. Looking at stats from the 2000 to 2002 seasons, it seems he had lots of high OBP boys in his lineup: Arod, Edgar Martinez (a fine hitter in his day), Ichiro, Mark McClemore, Mike Cameron... Those are some fine hitters. I'm just asking, not trying to start an argument here. I would however, make the argument, that a little fire in the clubhouse and in the public (aka Leyland) would somehow benefit this team. I don't care who manages them, if they don't get the players, it won't matter
  17. You guys are ruthless. I'm not a guru, who does Dave Roberts play for and is he a free agent?
  18. I think part of those new sanctions on N Korea is taking away Kim Jong's MLB Extra Innings... I'd invade the South over such things.
  19. Yeah, I guess I agree with that. Now that hind sight is 20/20, it would have been smart of the Cubs to re-sign Kenny after 2003. Corey got in the way of that. What's the bet? Will they re-sign Juan?
  20. Maybe the gist here is that if the price was fair, say 3 years 21 million, that it would be worth taking Juan back. What WAS Juan's OBP and numbers after June 1? Just curious...
  21. Torii is a lucky man, would he have made 12 million on the open market? That .336 OBP being so JuanPierrish...
  22. The Yanks will keep ARod, and jack their payroll to 250 million through acquisition of pitching. The "Boss" is REALLY pissed now, and will dip into the savings account even more. Getting ARod is a pipe dream. If Jimbo acquires ARod, I would take back everything bad I've ever said about the guy...well, almost.
  23. How would trading Lee be a smart thing? Assuming that he comes back normally, he fills arguably our most important position, plays hard...and is our best hitter. Just asking, I suppose there is a potential deal that would make sense, but it wouldn't be realistic...
  24. Do you have a head injury or something? No offense...
