  1. Murton would be fine in the lineup batting 2nd if we could get a guy named ARod...or one named Tejada...I just don't like Soriano, he strikes out too much and had rediculously inflated numbers this year... I'd much rather spend the farm on someone who can change games with his mere presence.
  2. I meant manegerially speaking...he was a fair player in his day :)
  3. Well, he didn't do much with the Tigers...though the cupboard was pretty bare...who knows something about him?
  4. Funny how teams that lose don't play good "team baseball". It's all about winning, folks...if you don't, you are not a "team"...if you do, you get all the Bull Durham stupid quotes about how it's "all about the team". Would Jeter be as good a "team" player if he played for the Cubs? I dare say not...
  5. So what's the short answer here? I don't understand all these statistics, but the way I read this is that keeping Ramirez, a healthy DLee producing like he can, and with Murton platooning with Jones, and with Barrett... We need two MORE hitters at least above average vs. the league...and then go after pitching? So a Soriano, CLee, Tejada, ARod, JD Drew, Pat Burrell, Crawford....whatever it is...we need a couple more hitters...???
  6. It seems to me that, at some point, the Cubs are going to have to risk over-paying for a bonafide hitter. I agree Soriano is probably not worth the money...but CLee I would think, for the money, would be a better buy given that he does walk more, and strike out less, than Soriano does. I like CLee...and he seems to have a penchant for hitting at Wrigley, much like Vinny Castilla seemed to have grossly inflated stats in Coors. Ten million is a helluva lot cheaper and more of a bargain than the 15 million dollars chasing after a guy that might whine to play second base. Given Uncle Lou's potential abrasiveness for that kinda thing, I would venture a guess that Lou and Alphonso might not get along too well.
  7. Sorry about that, you're right...Pinto. Regardless, giving up prospects for sure things is great..."sure things" aren't named Juan Pierre...
  8. Lugo's another stopgap, not much better than Izturis in the long scope. The Cubs need to do something bold and go after a real game changer, no more [expletive]-footing around.
  9. The Cubs MUST offer arbitration in order to restock the farm system Hendry pilfered when he made the trade to get Pierre. It seems to me that he gave up Wellemeyer and Mitre, who were average just like they were with the cubs. The only real keeper seems to be Nolasco...and he's not a sure bet. I'm not arguing to keep Pierre...he's average for the money he would cost. I'm just wondering did he really "pilfer" the farm to get Juan?
  10. You don't think the success rate of a bunt goes down if they know it's coming? I would say that it does.
  11. That's what I'm saying, sending up the pitcher to bunt telegraphs that that's the intention...therefore it increases the chances of bad things happening. Swinging away was his only choice...it just didn't work out.
  12. what is the overall sacrifice success rate in regular season? or that vs. the playofffs? I wonder if there are such stats.
  13. Does Floyd even bunt enough to be good enough at it to assure a sacrifice? He's not a huge strikeout guy, what 100 times a year or so? I tend to agree that Floyd was a poor choice for bunting or for hitting in such a critical situation, given his lack of action. And sending Glavine up to bunt HUGELY increases the chance for an out at 3b... I think Randolph made the right choice given he was down 2 runs.
  14. Because I'm forgiving, that's why. I'm a poor, downtrodden, and pathetic bleeding heart at seeing the underdog win. Actually it's because I've fired people before and sometimes come to regret it in the end. Besides, where would Jim get his money for all those fancy steak dinners, anyway?
  15. Then we are all anarchists... Or sadists...self mutilators or some such thing
  16. Are you an anarchist? Just asking...
  17. No arguments there. I'm just saying at this point it would do more harm than good to fire the guy.
  18. Launching HRs into the wind at Wrigley was easy given our accomplished AA pitching staff.
  19. Lack of consistency in winning is probably a more accurate way of saying it, and lack of management's ability to field a winner might be a better way of saying it. I don't follow things that closely, but having three GM's in fifteen years and five in the last twenty doesn't jump out as consistency to me... Actually, maybe it's six in the last 20, because didn't MacPhail kinda serve as "GM" for a period of time before hiring Ed Lynch? If I'm wrong I'm wrong.
  20. I don't want to be construed as someone who is "Mr. Sunshine" and thinks that Jim Hendry is the greatest thing since the Post-It note. On the other hand, I personally think that he should get another chance because he has taken them to semi-respectable, as you put it, and that the options out there are no better than him. He has a couple years left on his contract, let him run with it...then he gets fired. Lack of consistency in the Cubs as far as management goes has been one of their problems and firing Jim Hendry doesn't help. The "non deserving" comment was meant as an acknowledgement of the fact that he's made some poor choices and I wouldn't cry in my Chicken soup if he did get fired...i just think it would be a bad idea at this point.
  21. Pierre would be a good 8th place hitter on a team with better hitters...and nothing more. But he'd cost too much. I think he's gone. I hope he is gone anyway.
  22. Not lookin too great, x wife and three kids depletes all the disposable income intended for NSBB lawsuits.
  23. I don't think I was making the point that past GM's have to do with anything today. The discussion was, in my opinion, about Hendry being so horrible that the Cubs have never seen anything like it. I agree that Dallas Green was good for the team. But he was followed with Jim Fry, Larry Himes and later Ed Lynch. The Cubs have known so much futility over the years because they don't have any consistency of management, and firing Jim Hendry won't make anything any better. I think he should get (thought doesn't deserve, that much I grant you) another chance to see if he can pull off some of these deals like he has done in the past. Did Ed Lynch and Larry Himes do any better? No, that doesn't make it "okay"...but it is MORE detrimental to fire someone than to keep them sometimes, given that Hendry has done some good things, we should keep him. I would guess that he lurks on these boards someplace, and knows that he's been a total tool...and wants to rectify things. I like to think positive...sue me.
  24. it's not like Hendry is unique here, there's been many GM's before him that sucked, too.
  25. why do you have to call me stupid by saying my claim is "stupid"? I have a differing opinion...no need for that kinda stuff is there? I agree with some of what you say, but why complain about things we can't do anything about? What's done is done... I'm heading to work...have fun making fun of my opinions...
