  1. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/page/rumblings110816/jim-thome-truly-real-caring-person You can't afford to have the clubhouse struggle when fighting for 70 wins. And leadership is so much more important at 1B than offense. If Ricketts has such a hard-on for the Bosox, hire a backup catcher to be the "leader" and be done with it. I thought this was Koyie's clubhouse. Who's house? Koy's house!
  2. I know... CC's set to make $24M next year. Who the hell can sign him for more? He's 30 and a workhorse. Seems reliable for a long term deal but that could paralyze a team other than NYY or BOS.
  3. Do we have enough in the kitty to sign 2 of the following 3...? Wainright - hits FA if the Cards don't excecise his $9M/$12M option CC Sabathia - opts out of contract CJ Wilson - FA OK, I'll put down the crack pipe now.
  4. Why do you think Garza is a #3 pitcher (at best)? Add to that why he thinks Dempster is a #3 at best. Because of their ERAs and W/L, duh OK, so who's the #1 right now? Enlighten me. Z's a 3-4.
  5. What I've learned this year is that we need starting pitching in the worst way. Davis, Lopez, Coleman, etc.. only point to the fact that we have no one ready in the minors that are major league ready. The dreams of Dempster/Z/Garza as a solid 1,2,3 (not in that order) are false - they are 3's, 4's and 5's - at best. If trading Marmol, Marshall and any other "untouchable" player would've netted us some solid young starting pitching - Hendry's made a poor mistake. What good is Marmol if we can't hand hime the lead? Comments about CJ Wilson etc.. in the offseason will cost serious money and could be bad contracts. Go get Wilson - but we're gonna need another impact starter in the FA market.
  6. I guess we'll see how badly he wants to be here.
  7. is this a joke? No joke here. If he has a $16M option for next year combined with the scarce # of power 3B's available - he's looking for a multi-year deal, which could net him 3/$30M in the open market. Even if he wants to be here so badly, he'll give a discount. Plus, we have absolutely no one internally to meet/beat his production.
  8. And he also had this to say. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/6782205-417/gm-jim-hendry-doesnt-believe-cubs-need-to-go-boom-to-improve.html In any other division - 5th place is last. Jimbo benefits from the fact that we technically aren't in last place. So yeah, there better be a rebuilding effort.
  9. So, for the 8th straight year (since 04) - the Cubs are on target for surpassing the 3M mark in attendance. 4 of those years we finished above .500. Why is Ricketts/Hendry scared to pull the trigger and let some of these guys go? And - dare I say it - possibly make the team better down the road? Its not like people won't come to the games.
  10. Awesome. Why does Hendry fall in love with the idea that being a good guy outwweighs their playing ability? We need to get a GM with a cut-throat, take-no-prisoners attitude. This is a business and it seems that the Chicago Cubs don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.
  11. The team can't move Z or Soriano, and there's no reason to move Ramirez unless the offer is really, really good. And I don't mind seeing the Cards and Crew giving up their long term assets for moderate, very short term gains. Meanwhile, Ricketts is pouring money into the amateur side, which is a new, very positive direction. This offseason will be the first since the new ownership took over in which there will be substantial money to be spent. I'll wait until well into the offseason before I cast any aspersions about the direction of the team. I agree re: the amateur side. But how can a guy like Jeff Baker be "untouchable"? Come on. He's a role player. Same thing for DeWitt. If we're not picking up Ramirez contract option next year - we better sign him to a 3 year deal worth approx. $25M - if he wants to be here so badly.
  12. Why on earth would a veteran who has never won a WS want to go to a contending team? So Cub.
  13. In general, watching rival teams get better with the goal of winning a WS in the present is really starting to rub me the wrong way. The Cubs are not in position to grant any current players' wish to stay with the organization (NTC aside) if it means we can get better a year or 2 from now. The lack of any plan or direction of this organization is wearing extremely thin.
  14. I have no problem with the Astros moving to the AL - it makes sense, just don't know why it hasn't been done already. Although, having 2 15 leagues with no divisions I don't agree with. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=6651634

  16. This is also Coleman's next start, so this will line up for perhaps Wells replacing Coleman instead of Davis? Depending on how the junkballer extraordinaire fares tonight? It's very possible it'll be Coleman down instead of Davis. I believe if we send Davis down, he'll have to pass through waivers and might be able to flat out refuse the assignment. We can send Coleman up and down at will, however, and production probably won't be all that different between the two. Coleman really hasn't pitched remotely well enough to justify keeping a rotation spot when Wells comes back. Will Davis? With two unproductive rotation spots, if neither guy filling those spots is pitching well, then the decision really shouldn't be based on whether one guy has earned a spot or not (because neither has). I think Coleman should be the guy to go down either way (unless Davis is flat out horrid), but if Davis pitches well it makes the decision that much more clear. Davis looked good. Coleman sb sent down along with Koyie - both never to don a Cubs uni again.
  17. Why? Barney's been a pleasant surprise, but if the Cubs can make an impact move I'd like to think they'd hold back because of Darwin Barney. How about signing Reyes and moving either him or Castro over to 2B? 2012: Sign Reyes for SS, move Castro to 3rd, Darwin at 2nd, Fielder at 1B. Sign me up.
  18. I don't like the fact that Quade openly admits the Cubs have no speed threats on the team when we had a guy here who could disrupt the basepaths and we trade him. I'm glad he's doing well.
  19. We've seen the Brewers lock up Braun, the Rays lock up Longoria and there a few others that don't come to mind. Do the Cubs lock up Castro to a long term deal early? Seems to be a trend that I have a hard time disagreeing with.
  20. Liriano has had a history of shoulder problems and has an "inverted W" Or an "M" to others...
  21. Its actually win 60/lose 60. The other 40 determine your season.
  22. Very, very touching... I could barely get through it. I'm glad the Santo's were able to share that story. Thanks.
  23. no. nor should we seek to trade zambrano. Looks to be more than conjecture.
  24. Anyone think that with the Yankees hiring Rothschild that a trade of Zambrano to the Yanks becomes a little easier? Greases the skids? More possible now than ever.
  25. While the tax % will remain the same, I tax $'s will increase as tix prices increase over the 30 year term. In my mind, its not a bad deal considering its the 3rd largest tour atraction in the city. Is the city already upside down? Yes, thanks in large part to Daley/alderman (parking meters, tollway, flower plants on Ashland, etc...). Do you seriously trust the same people to manage these funds better moving forward? I give Ricketts credit for the balls to pull this move, knowing full well that it needed vast improvements. If they're forced to leave Wrigley and build something on the west side or burbs, I personally don't care - I'll still be a fan in search of a WS title and however they get there, I really don't care.
