  1. A Maddon jersey seems like a great idea, but I'd be wary because he seems to be barely walking the line between genius and madness.
  2. Crunch those numbers for us, Conky.
  3. Would this still work is the runner's pants were full of foam instead of being about to burst?
  4. i guess that's probably true if you have some sort of mental disease that prevents you from conditional thought What am I missing here? As has been pointed out, you really have to be timing and positioning yourself just right to potentially be taking advantage of reaching the base quicker AND not sending your chances of stupidly injuring yourself through the roof. It doesn't seem like something you could ever really rely on consistently to get you to the base quicker, so what would change even if it's a lock that it could get you there quicker if done right? It's not exactly an easily teachable skill or ability.
  5. Right, but what does it matter if it's faster or not? There's simply no getting around the injury-factor.
  6. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/diving-into-first-base-maybe-not-crazy/ As the link notes, this is not about injuries. This is purely about whether diving or running through the bag is faster. Take your injury arguments elsewhere. I've long been in the minority (I think) by believing that diving could be (theoretically) slightly faster than running through the bag, but I know everyone has strong opinions on this. It's pointless to discuss this if you're throwing down the absurd caveat that is in bold up there. It's impossible to separate the ridiculous jump in the chances of the runner injuring themselves from the act itself, so what does it matter if it's technically faster? There's basically zero chance that any benefit would come even remotely close to offsetting the spike in injuries if players were encouraged to do this.

  8. I'm going to celebrate my 10th anniversary with a diabolical orgy with 10 stunningly beautiful people. That's how it works, right?
  9. That's the most normal-sized his face has ever looked. What a catch-22.
  10. Man, some of you guys have incredible memories for these banned posters. That was 7 years ago. Yeah, but that was easily a top 10 thread; maybe top 5.
  11. Sad story, but you guys realize that like half of it is complete bull [expletive] right? How so For starters, you don't get knocked out and wake up hours or days later unless you're in a movie. It's likely a combination of embellishment and a guy who suffered multiple violent head injuries not remembering things clearly. It's not like the injuries didn't actually happen; he was repeatedly sent out there while still dealing with dizziness, poor balance, trouble seeing or splitting headaches, and that's not even counting the injuries to the rest of his body.
  12. My apartment in Chicago got terrible wireless and phone reception back in the kitchen, so if I was stuck back there cooking or cleaning I'd usually just settle for the radio. Mostly the news or NPR, but sometimes you want scores or, let's face it, to do a little hate-listening. But as soon as I was free from that signal deadzone? Forget it, it was like that garbage didn't exist.
  13. I'm so glad I don't have to hear about Andy the Clown or Al's Beef every afternoon when I turn on the score anymore. http://stream1.gifsoup.com/webroot/animatedgifs1/1475557_o.gif
  14. Yeah, but that was The Score playing a Fox Sports feed. They still do that on occasion...sometimes on weekends, more often on holidays. weird. ive never heard that but i rarely tune in at those times. kinda odd that they wouldn't have some cbs programming to put on instead. That's what I figured would be on; I just wanted one of those highlight shows to get some quick scores and instead it's North slobbering all over the mic. Horrifying.
  15. If you read this like it's being said by Chekov it's pretty great.
  16. true, except for the first two weeks. The best available information says they are better off holding him out for two weeks. He's basically saying that getting an extra year of control isn't a "result" because reasons. well, you can make a pretty good case that if it makes the difference between a playoff spot in 2015 and not, the playoff result is a better result than the extra year result. the problem is you have no way of knowing if that very unlikely scenario is going to play out ahead of time so you can't make a decision based on it happening. It just seems like it would even be tricky to quantify whether or not one player took a team to the playoffs. Between that and, like you said, how unlikely it is that that would be the case, it seems like such a silly thing to get worked up over.

  18. I wish you could force every meatball who goes bonkers when a player doesn't "run it out" or is injured or loves it when they go crashing into a wall or sliding in to first to read that. Obviously it's an extreme case, but so much of that was avoidable.
  19. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE.
  20. Leo Durocher puts Dusty Baker when it comes to player abuse: http://thestacks.deadspin.com/the-slow-destruction-of-pete-reiser-the-greatest-playe-1691040888 Really fantastic profile of Pete Resier from 1958. I had never heard of Reiser before reading it, but it's a great piece and just heartbreaking. He really was one of the "best who never was;" seemingly everyone in the game thought he was going to be incredible and one of the all-time greats. The guy put up a 7.5 WAR in his second season in 1941 in just 137 games. Only managed 357 games over the next 3 seasons but still put up a cumulative 8.5 WAR. That latter stat isn't all that impressive on the surface, but when you read the scope of the injuries and misuse the guy went through it's incredible he even survived to that point. He only managed to play in 309 games over the next 5 seasons and after 1952 he was gone (he spent 3 years in the army during WW2, so he only played 10 seasons and only 4 of those he managed to play in at least 100 games). Seriously, read it. It's amazing and infuriating and just really what sports journalism should be.
  21. I remember turning on the Score (I think on Saturday mornings/early afternoons) and still hearing North as recently as late last year. I figured it was just a once-a-week thing, but still, why would anyone still pay to broadcast him? I was convinced at first it was some kind of replay from ye olden days and then got really, really sad when I realized it was live.
  22. sulley, I love the idea of trading for Hamels and I love you in starving mad dog-mode, but I don't understand why you're so focused like trading Castro would be the only way to net Hamels. Baez is a much more appealing trade chip, and why are you even bring up Al Contra like he's even remotely close to being some kind of sure thing? I think the Cubs could relatively easily net Hamels without giving up Castro, Rizzo, Soler, Russell or Bryant...why don't you?
  23. Could you explain what you mean by this? Like, as a manager or broadcaster or something? The guy clearly wants anything along those lines; coaching, broadcasting, basically being a human mascot...he just wants back in, period.
  24. I don't care if he's in the HoF or not (he should be, but who gives a [expletive]), but I hope his smug ass is never let back in to pro baseball. That's what he really wants, and [expletive] him.
