    If Wood throws out of the pen next year as well as everyone thinks he can are penwill be lethal and it gives Hendry the option of trading Wuertz, Aardasma, Nova in a package with prospects for an impact bat. I'd rather hold onto Wuertz and trade Eyre and Dempster instead. They need to shed some bullpen dollars.

    He made Sammy cork his bat, slide after getting beaned and leave the last game of 2004 early? I don't view Sammy as the uber-villain some did and still do, but he didn't do himself any favors in some very key ways. The Stone thing I think is a very scathing indictment of how lax his clubhouse is.

    They should be starting Ryu over Marshall at this point. Marshall's reached his breaking point in terms of IP.

    It's a good point. It's only 3 starts, but the guy has already rebounded much quicker and further than Prior or Wood did. What? Much quicker than Prior did? He was out for over a year. He's missed most of 3 straight seasons. Both Wood and Prior made "comebacks" this year where they were supposedly ready to go. Both, with a few exceptions, didn't do so hot. Miller's had 3 straight quality starts now. I dare say that's better than anything Wood AND Prior mustered this year. Prior was not out "for over a year" when he took the mound this year. Keep in mind, I'm not insulting or attacking Wood or Prior. I hope Prior can get back to fighting form and I defiite would like to seee Wood back for cheap and working out of the bullpen. I also want to see Miller back on the cheap and starting. I do not want any of these options if they hinder the Cubs from making significant steps to repairing the rest of the starting lineup.

    Sure, Houston Wade Miller at 100% would be better - but I'm not counting on 1999 Wood and 2003 Prior . . . Wade Miller even just close to what he was is better than everyone you listed. It all hinges on how cheap he can be had for. As long as he doesn't keep the team from going out and getting at LEAST one other quality starter, I can live with it.

    Also, Prior is in his arbitration years, he's pissing away millions if he deliberately shuts down despite being able to throw. A decent 2006 could have earned him $8-10m next season. I agree with you both, but they would be pitching for a famous pitching abuser and either making him look good or getting hurt. This was the best answer, shut down and keep quite about it until Dusty is gone. Hendry is in on it and he hold the purse strings. I don't see it as to far fected. This is the most ridiculous thing you've posted about the Cubs so far this year. And that's saying something.

    The only young pitcher (besides Hill) I want to see get serious face time is Guzman. He should be the next priority because if he can finally turn the corner a la Hill, he's gonna be impressive. If he can't, it needs to be figured out ASAP. We've been hearing he's "practically" ready for over 3 years now...let's see it. I have hopes for Marmol, Marshall, and Mateo but I think they're better served refining their game pitching full time in the minors and being called up to cover for injuries...Mateo or Marmol I'd consider putting into the bullpen over someone like Novoa, as long as they'd get regular relief time.

    As long as it's for only 1 year and for less than what Neifi made, definitely. It's a gamble, but there's at least some hope being shown, sample size that it is, that it could pay off. If he can be anywhere near the old Wade Miller if even only just for a season it helps in a number of valuable ways.

    There probably are any number of managers that would manage exactly the way Baker has. After all Baker played The Game and is a baseball lifer, that seems to be a prerequisit for the position. But truely, I don't think a manager matters that much, maybe a handfull of wins over the course of the season. If a team is close it matter much more. I think Girardi managed the Marlins out of the playoffs, for example. Baker is/was bad, but I don't think he could have got much more out that assembled team then he got. It was bad at the end of 05 and was worse at the start of Spring Training. From what I've ssen of Girardi, I don't want him managing the Cubs next year. Nevertheless, until the front office decides that their philosophy de jour is not the right one it could be a while until the Cubs are in contention. As always I hope for the best. Sometimes things just break right. What's your issue with Girardi? He's only been at it a year but there are strong signs he'll be a young pitcher-abuser extraordinaire a la Dusty in no time.

    It would have been horrible - but as I remember, Brant Brown was a BIG reason why we were in it that year. Didn't he have like several late inning HR's that year to win games? And he was young - what ever happened to him? It is like he was traded and then fell off the face of the earth. He was the Alex Gonzalez of his day.

    Seeing as this is baseball, the Cubs could easily get just as good a pick where they're at now as opposed to being in last place. I'd like to see him get smashed because I don't want to see Hendry sign him to a long-term deal in the offseason based on a couple of good starts at the end of the season. Nobody wants a long term deal for him at this point. My issues with Hendry aside, I'm hoping he's learned from his mistakes with Neifi, Rusch and Dempster and wouldn't sign him to more than a single year deal with incentives on the cheap. The pitching FA market is pretty slim this year and if Miller can get back to what he was or even just close to that he helps solve some problems as a go-to #4 or even #3. I understand the concern but at the same time I find it inane and incredibly shortsighted for people to root for the failure of someone who could potentially help this team out in a big way next year ideally for not a huge sum of money. We're not talking Neifi or Rusch flash in the pans here here...Miller has shown in the past he can be a legitmately good starter. Obviously, I don't want him coming back to be at the sacrifice of picking up another quality starter out the FA market, but I want him to succeed for this club for the right price.

    I've officially given up on Dempster. Unless he's pitching hurt, he's just proving last year and the beginning of this one were just an extended fluke. Yeah, I know the team is bad and his schedule has been all over the place, but he's looking beyond terrible at this point.
