  1. Unless he's Bonds, being big doesn't make taking a baseball off the back of the head any easier.
  2. I really don't like Carlos Zambrano anymore.
  3. I really don't understand the "oh, it's better for them to drink in the clubhouse since they'll just be going out and drinking instead" line of thinking. By that logic, we should all be able to drink at work at the end of the day. Yes, I know with the players their "work" is technically over, but they're still in their place of "business." How hard is it to wait until you leave there before you do any drinking? If we're depriving them of something they NEED to do, that's indicative of a problem, not a lost privilege.
  4. I knew someone was going to do this. Boy, some of these reactions are pretty funny. Good work NC! I think it's fun to read some of the comments again a few minutes later when he turns out to be much better than anyone expected (at least for now). So will you bump this when the wind starts blowing out again? Marquis has pitched in: 2 games where the wind was blowing in 3 games where there was a crosswind 2 games where the wind was blowing out I don't think the wind has helped him nearly as much as you are implying. Besides, a lot of the people who posted in this thread would have found it shocking if Marquis posted an ERA under 5, and with every start that becomes more and more likely. I'm not saying the guy can't have a good year...but he's obviously not going to stay this good, and there's a pretty damn good chance he's going to lose a LOT of steam when Wrigley turns back into the hitter's park it's known for being once it's actually warm out all the time and the wind is blowing out more often than not. If he can keep the ball on the ground like he should, fine, things will get interesting...but games where he's giving up a lot of fly ball outs aren't going to serve him well at all at home pitching against better teams.

  6. With the exception of the champagne in the winning of something, is that really too much to ask of a workplace? Exactly. This isn't a huge deal.
  7. I'm impressed, but it won't last. That's not to say he'll be as bad as he's been in recent years, but he's shown pretty much every year that he loses some steam in the 2nd half of the season. But I'll happily enjoy all the success that he has.
  8. Now THIS is when you tip your cap. Bravo, Marquis.
  9. Wow, Derosa's numbers with bases loaded are pretty awesome.
  10. Good job, Murt! If they don't get runs like this 2 nights in a row, Lou NEEDS to chew them out.
  11. "Cubs would love to add some runs this inning..." ...but they won't.
  12. Are we already starting with the "Dumpster" crap?
  13. It's really getting on my nerves as I drink more and the Cubs aren't capitalizing on Marquis' performance.
  14. Marquis is having a very, very, very, very, VERY good game so far.
  15. One loss and all the good feelings generated over the past week and a half are gone, huh? LOL I don't know if was the loss itself last night, or the way we lost. The bottom of the 8th was some of the worst baseball I have ever seen in my life. Even the very best teams in the league will lose games looking awful...and the worst teams will look great in some games. It's inevitable with a 162 game schedule and the nature of the game. Last night's game doesn't tell me anything I didn't know about the team before the night began. I agree. And I disagree that the 8th inning was some of the worst baseball people have ever seen. Come on. The worst inning you could see is 3 straight weak ground balls to the pitcher on 1 pitch each. The Cubs threatened but didn't score. Big deal. I've seen much worse. At least they threatened, for one. And two, you have a guy like Murton who is not accustomed to pinch hitting come up and hit a pop up that doesn't get the job done. That's part of the problem of the "just hit it in the air" mentality of playing for sac flies, especially when you have a guy that doesn't hit a lot of deep flies. The pitcher got ahead in the count, but Murton battled, and in trying to hit it in the air he got a fraction of an inch under the ball. It wasn't an awful at bat. It was a bad result, but come on already with the melodrama. Then Barrett is walked and Jones grounds out against a lefty. Well, Jones never hits lefties. Was anybody really surprised. He got tied up. Pittsburgh left many more people on base yesterday. The 8th inning was just an inning that nobody would remember if they made the save. It was an annoying loss since it was the first game in a home series against a bad team and brought them back to .500. But there's no reason for all the angst about the so-called worst baseball people have ever seen. Watching that game last night was like pounding nails into 2 X 4's with your head. God it was awful. It's like someone flips a switch and we hit like 2 year olds for what seems like days. Then it flips again and we're world beaters for an inning or two. I feel like a piece of stretched taffy watching this ballclub sometimes. Out of curiosity, did you actually read the post that you replied to, or was it just happy coincidence that we got to see both sides of the coinc so perfectly illustrated?
  16. I like Theriot, but you might as well vote on someone like Eckstein if you're truing to get Ryan on the AS team.
  17. "Broken down?" I hadn't heard put that harshly before. Still, I'm all for Z being moved for the right return.
  18. *raises hand* can't get enough Fresh Prince of Bel Air, eh? I can't get enough of the King of Queens. Damned royalists, stripping away our freeeeeeeeeedommmmmm!!!
  19. Because the locals papers said that when the weather warms and off-days start to disappear, he's going to have to start giving guys like Lee a day off here and there, which would mean Ward plays. It's just ESPN taking local news, twisting the headline and trying to make it look like their own. I believe the quote was: ''I have to get him in there once in a while,'' Piniella said. To me that's just a manager talking about a guy who hasn't been playing much in the midst of all sorts of questions about playing time for outfielders. Oh, well that's different. Lou has said from day one that he wants to get everyone at least a few days off throughout the season, so Ward playing in that context is fine. "Getting him more playing time" sounds much more general and depressing.
