  1. Not getting the Olympics in Chicago was a good thing; every city that hosts them takes a HUGE hit money-wise and almost never actually makes it back and Chicago is already broke enough as it is.
  2. Unless it's for Stanton.
  3. That's been around forever, grandpa.
  4. Is he worth pursuing, really? Just because he wants to play doesn't make him a player. I'm asking because I haven't the slightest idea how his numbers translate to MLB numbers. He'll be 28 next year. We really don't have any kind of history with Korean hitters being successful outside of Choo. With that said, when numbers start floating around we'll see if he's really a guy worth having. Shin-Soo Choo isn't a fair comparison since he signed with the Mariners out of high school, a la Hak-Ju Lee, Dae-Eun Rhee and Jae-Hoon Ha. Hyun-Jin Ryu is the only player I can think of in recent years to have a run in the KBO before coming over to the MLB but he's a pitcher. ETA: Looking it up, just realized Choo and Hee Seop Choi are the only hitters who are Korean natives who've played in the big leagues. Yeah, I could only come up with the two of them and just assumed there were more. Huh. So it's a 50/50 chance that this guy is good! THAT'S SCIENCE.
  5. I like this new looks-based scouting system. Given how ugly most of the Cubs are it seems essential that they land this guy.
  6. Do you know what fWAR is?
  7. And the year before that. And the year before that...and so on and so on and so on.
  8. pierce johnson turning into steve blass. http://replygif.net/i/1313.gif
  9. So the waves will come from a wave pool, SO WHAT.
  10. Or, for [expletive]'s sake; there's an active general NBA thread. Nobody is going to get banned because it wasn't renamed.
  11. Why is this stuff going here and not in the NBA thread?
  12. Eh, he could have gone a ton of places and got team wins. It sounds like he's really into personal ones. But maybe I'm reading him wrong. Well, based on where he ended up the bold part doesn't seem to be the case. I agree that he wanted/was willing to stay here, but often times people are willing to overlook a lot when they're paid well and like the people around them (it sure seemed like he got along with most of the other players). Plenty of players want to stick it to their former team after they're gone, plus you have the added aspect of him looking back at the Cubs situation now that he's outside of it and realizing how fucked up it is and ultimately being happy he's anywhere but in Chicago or Houston. Plus imagine the shock of going from the Rays to the Cubs to playing in Miller Park. Talk about movin' on up.
  13. Yes, but they also have actual wins. Eases the sting a bit.
  14. You should, because Theo sucks. OK. I'm back. Shame on you. Shame on him; I caught that 30 for 30 short this weekend about how ARod was almost traded to the Red Sox and the sight of Theo's face suddenly filled me with a roiling, seething rage. It actually kind of scared me a little bit, but then I embraced it and things felt great. The day I salute him for lucky bullpen pickups (when the bullpen as whole is a dog's ass for the third year) and guys they pick up off of the scrap heap praying they can spin them at the deadline is the day I submit to Xenu. Theo Epstein is a monster. I was cool with seeing Hoyer, though; that dude is dreamy.
  15. Maybe so but he is being disengenious because if the Cubs had been willing to pay him he would have stayed and be saying how he wants to be part of the excitement when things finally turn around. He is full of crap and just likes to hear himself talk. And it makes him feel better about himself to talk [expletive] about the Cubs and tell Shark to leave because he is jilted they wouldn't give him the money he wanted and valued prospects more than him. Or he has the clarity of realizing the bullet he dodged now that he's put some distance between himself and the wreckage.
  16. Rondon Fan, change your [expletive] name. There's plenty of other much more deserving candidates. See if you can help Olt.
  17. The point isn't that he was right to say that; it's that he now plays for a team that also has no chance of winning big. If he really was so gung ho about winning he would have taken less to go to a legit contender, or even stay with Texas. the team he's on now has the best record in baseball yeah. that's probably not gonna last. Yeah, if only he had just surrendered to cold logic and just accepted the necessity of being willfully terrible.
  18. Sexy DP. Hammell looked genuinely terrified to be watching the bullpen go to work. Poor bastard.
  19. The point isn't that he was right to say that; it's that he now plays for a team that also has no chance of winning big. If he really was so gung ho about winning he would have taken less to go to a legit contender, or even stay with Texas. But he IS on a team that actually has a chance of having a winning season because, shockingly, that CAN happen when seasons aren't being punted.
  20. It's cool; I fixed him.
  21. Eat [expletive].
  22. He's also a dumb ass. He's an idiot savant; sometimes he's right and he looks like a [expletive] genius. This is one of those times. I applaud him and his boisterous honesty and this thoughtfulness towards his fellow player.
