    hahahahahahahaha That is awesome, and very true. I watched some of Tuesday night's game (their first of the freaking season) and the stadium was practically empty. And it was the 8th inning of a 2-1 game. Obviously it was a rescheduled makeup, but still, that struck me as pathetic.

    Yeah, Patterson's homer was a good sign inasmuch as it proves he can still hit gopher balls out, but little more.

    This is a fair point. We all want Theriot to do well - I seriously doubt anyone on this board doesn't want that. Most of us just know that Theriot is not likely to do well, and is damn near certain not to do well enough to justify hitting at the top of the order.

    I'm doing the PA for today's BSU baseball game and somehow got suckered into letting my roommate (student paper's beat writer for the team) borrow my laptop and watch my MLB.TV while I'm doing work. Not sure how that happened.

    Well, for starters, you said Pierre was an average hitter. In 2006 he got on base at a .330 clip. That's not bad if you're an 8-hole hitter. Pierre, unfortunately, was the leadoff hitter. Ok, well, having a bad OBP is alright if you slug well. Well, Pierre slugged .388, which is pitiful. Sadly enough, that was actually his 3rd highest slugging percentage of his entire career. He stole 58 bases; he was also caught 20 times. 58 for 78 is 74.36 percent, which is slightly below the 75 percent benchmark at which stolen bases statistically 'break even' in terms of helping/hurting your team, so Pierre's stealing had almost no effect on the Cubs and what effect it did have was negative. Pierre also surrendered roughly 800 bajillion extra bases because of his sixth-grade transsexual-caliber throwing arm. He wasn't bad defensively, but his bad arm keeps him from being what could really be considered good. Was Pierre an average center fielder? Well, there were 26 center fielders in baseball in 2006 that qualified for the batting title (if you count Jacque Jones, which Yahoo! stupidly does). Pierre was 24th in OPS. That is not average. That is mind-numbingly awful, especially when you have the Cubs' resources. PS: If you're curious, the guys below him were Willy Taveras and Clint Barmes. Great company.

    Juan Pierre was acquired to be a good leadoff hitter. Juan Pierre made more outs than anyone in baseball in the year 2006. Juan Pierre failed miserably in doing what he was acquired to do. Simple enough, I think.

    Can't speak for everyone else, but it started when you stole Doherty from us after one year (and I took some special schadenfreude in the ensuing mess) and has grown from there. That said, if they win it all I win money, so go Heels.

    This matters how? Granted, Soriano did look particularly horrible, especially in his second at bat that featured him swinging the bat 6 times at 6 balls. Very frustrating. At least with Theriot you know the exact outcome of his PA every time: "Ryan Theriot flies out softly to RF" Oh, come now. He grounds out plenty often. He couldn't even make contact half the time today. I kept thinking to myself, if he's going to strikeout, then will anyone notice if we replace him with the bat boy? It's just his body couldn't handle the grind of starting a 2nd full major league season. He'll be fine now that he's adjusted.

    I actually like Brook as a pro. He seems like a decent complement to Noah if the Bulls choose to go that way.

Opposing him for the Beermakers will be Cardinals' defect Jeff Suppan http://farm1.static.flickr.com/156/415234603_b6339cbd64.jpg who enjoyed a much-too-successful 2.84 ERA against the beloved Cubs in 2007. One can only hope this putz http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2005/08/08/JZ87BONp.jpg receives an earholing from Lilly after doubling in two runs on Monday. Go Cubs!!!

    Pierre benched today. Joe Torre immediately gains new respect from me.

    I wouldn't be so mad at him if he had gotten 4 plate appearances, but he got more than anyone on the team, tied with Soriano. It's such a waste.
