Mostly it would be teeing off on the B1G for constantly trying to pretend they care about anything but money while literally spending the past 3 decades straight proving otherwise.
I don't think ND will literally be forced into a conference. The CFP is too big now, and any attempt to codify a way to exclude independents into it at this point would be a hilariously obvious violation of antitrust law. Oddly enough, they might find an ally in the SEC, who would prefer the only remaining big name on the board not go to the other big moneymaking conference and would likely help devise a way to avoid that if possible.
But they might just join one anyway since the whole idea of being in a conference has long since stopped being relevant. (The only connective tissue 8 of the soon-to-be 18 B1G schools are going to have is that they like money and the B1G offered it.) The financial realities of going it alone are just going to be too much to overcome at some point.
