  1. Nicholls State/Oregon State postponed by Hurricane Isaac (Nicholls unable to leave the area), no makeup day set.
  2. Well, he's no woman. If LaRussa was still the manager he'd have his pitchers throwing at the Pirates the rest of the season Westbrook did throw at Josh Harrison later, angering Rod Barajas. Don't ever change, Cardinals.
  3. Texas A&M's opener with La Tech moved to 10/13 for Hurricane Isaac. Aggies will now open with Florida. Welcome to the SEC, I guess.
  4. Win. Or lose. Doesn't matter.
  5. Meanwhile, Cierre Wood and Justin Utupo suspended the first 2 games at ND for some sort of team rules violation. Does anyone on that team want to fly to Ireland?
  6. The local media contract ends after the 2013 season. The new deal will likely eclipse the Yankees contract. Texas just got about 150 mil a year (and the Angels a bit more), the Dodgers should be worth at least twice that. So the new owners are just trying to pump up interest before negotiations. note: The Cubs receive about 50 mil a year from WGN and CSN. Though the WGN contract ends 2014, the CSN contract doesn't until after 2019. I wonder if the Cubs will even have any interest in working a new deal with WGN now that the Tribsters aren't involved in ownership.
  7. Is it because of Beckett and AGonz that Boston can find someone to take Crawford's reprehensible contract? I'm trying to figure out how Boston is going to get rid of that thing but no one will even sniff Soriano.
  8. I won't believe it until they cut his scene out of the movie DodgeBall.
  9. I think there was one in the spring and until Rees got arrested but I haven't seen one shred of evidence to suggest anyone but Golson would be starting since that happened (and especially after Kelly suspended Rees for a game and made that cryptic "you can move up the depth chart after that" comment that made clear Rees wasn't going to be starting right away once he was back). And to be clear, I'm all for that and have been for a while. I just didn't think it needed to take till late August to say so. Then again, I may just be fatigued from not having a for-sure starting QB at ND for the last 20 months or so. On another topic, Skip Holtz says Aaron Lynch is getting married this weekend. That must be some [expletive] girl to go to all this trouble for.
  10. Multiple reports that Kelly's finally going to stop pretending there's a real competition and name Everett Golson the starting QB today.
  11. I'm biased, but trading for Cam makes sense to me. He's a 1st round pick in just about any league this year I'd imagine.
  12. Texas will have two LHN games this year, their first two. No Big 12 games on LHN apparently. So Texas and Texas State will have the same number of football games on Texas's network.
  13. Gary Gray...name sounds familiar, but I can't put a face to it. Would you kindly ask him to please TURN HIS [expletive] HEAD AROUND Or at least assault the receiver in the damn end zone when the only way you are guaranteed a loss is if you don't?? in his defense, he actually drew an interference flag on that play too That pathetic attempt at interference was worse than just letting him catch the ball. Let's just move on before I kick something.
  14. Gary Gray...name sounds familiar, but I can't put a face to it. Would you kindly ask him to please TURN HIS [expletive] HEAD AROUND Or at least assault the receiver in the damn end zone when the only way you are guaranteed a loss is if you don't??
  15. Looking more and more like another 8-win season from Kelly would actually be kind of impressive.
  16. Good to see Vitters knew what to do with that hanging breaker.
  17. Go Cubs. Rizzo with the day off today. DeJesus RF, Barney 2B, Valbuena 3B, Soriano LF, Castro SS, LaHair 1B, Jackson CF, Clevenger C, Volstad P
  18. Castro doesn't have to hit his ceiling to be worth $8.5M a year, so this is a terrific deal.
  19. They're definitely out-uglying Nike. USC and Alabama must have sweetheart deals with Nike since they never have to dress up in this garbage.
  20. My mom took me to a game at old Cleveland Municipal in June 1987 when I was a baby. The Tigers beat the Indians 13-3. The first game of my conscious memory was May 5, 2000, Pirates @ Cubs. The Cubs lost 4-2 and Sammy Sosa and Eric Young each hit a home run (at that point, all I was really looking for from that team).
  21. Solid move. And if his relative struggles of late shave a few million or so off the contract, so much the better.
  22. Hendry made more than a few appearances with Len and Bob as well.
  23. I've only done one draft so far (a group of friends started a keeper league last year), but in that one, Aaron Rodgers was the first nominee. No one really knew how they were going to use their budget, so he ended up going for $37. By comparison, I later drafted Peyton Manning for $41, and someone spent almost $60 on Arian Foster. So you might be able to get someone good early for good value if you have a really early pick and your fellow players are as slow on the uptake as my league was.
  24. No it isn't. The media chews stories up and spits them out on a regular basis. Somebody like Bruce Miles covers most things with a levelheaded "just the facts ma'am" approach that is underappreciated. The more obnoxious members of the media know there will always be another "fun thing to cover" so they don't have any problem ruining one storyline in the pursuit of exploiting it. Their purpose isn't necessarily to run the player out of town, although in some instances it's pretty clear that is part of the motive. Their purpose is to exploit a story and rile up the masses with hate, anger, accusations of laziness and other forms of tearing down the player. Somebody like Kaplan is a jock sniffer that will prop up his buddies while tearing down the guys he doesn't want to try and go on a double date with. I'd ask a favor of you and others. If you have time the next few days, list names of others besides Kaplan who you feel are racist, intentionally or not. I would like to observe them for an extended period of time to see if I sense what some of you do, I haven't been involved in this so far, but I'll give you Bob Brenly right off the bat.
  25. The best chance to win a World Series is to have multiple playoff appearances. You have a better chance to have multiple playoff appearances if Strasburg is healthy for multiple seasons. Strasburg might be healthy as an ox next year, but the team could be [expletive] garbage or suffer a rash of other injuries. When you've got a real chance to win the whole thing, it seems dissonant to intentionally keep your best pitcher from playing in the postseason. My thing is, Washington has known all year from the top down that this innings limit existed, so it befuddles me why they didn't really do much about it all year. Mojo's probably right about Strasburg not being able to turn the switch back on, but I just feel like there has to be something the Nats can do to have him pitch in October.
