  1. I think that part of looking at the bench and its production is what the Cubs paid for it. Its not "Neifi or nothing" its "Neifi at 2.5 million or Theriot at the minimum." Same thign with Rusch and the bullpen guys. When a team overpays for a bench, you expect a couple of professional hitters like Lenny Harris (the Mets' version not the Cubs' version) a couple of "tooly guys" like Lloyd McLendon in 1989, a superb defensive guy who can also pr like Dascenzo was and a Blanco (woo hoo!, one for four).
  2. But Hendry brought us all these players and is still talking about Dusty being able to turn it around. At some point, when its "everyone's" fault, you have to point the biggest finger at the guy who put this thing together. Its not going to change for the better until there is a new regime.
  3. If it was so obvious that he was throwing at him...he should have been tossed after the second time he "threw at him."
  4. I didn't even notice that.
  5. What's the difference, they're both cheaters. Please, lets not insult Sammy anymore with a comparison to Bonds. Of course if people started throwing at Sammy, we (his four remaining fans) would be ticked off.
  6. Are you referring to when Dawson threw bats at him on the field? I love Dawson...it was that situation that burned the Joe West name into my head. I've seen/heard him screw up a million times since then. He's like a "bad guy" WWF referee.

  8. So I was flipping between Baseball Tonight and Mets Classics waiting for a Cubs' final score last night, when I saw the highlights of Joe West throwing an Astros pitcher out of the game for plunking Bonds. Classic Joe West, take an innocouse situation and throw gasoline on it, then throw a bunch of people out. All that was missing was the blown call. Then, on a flip back to Mets Classic (the 86 Mets were playing the Cubs...weird to see a young Eck in a Cubs' uni) the 80's Mets announcers were ragging on the "veteran" umpire behind the plate with the inconsitant strike zone. Sure enough, that umpire was Country Joe West (now Cowboy Joe West)....which led me to think...how many games has this guy mangled over the years? How many times has he butchered the rules, the strike zone, let his ego get in the way of the game, or just plain old ignored the rulebook and he's still umpiring?
  9. Steve, I'm sure they'd be over 2004 by now. They'd be happy to have you help out in bp.
  10. Nah...they'll pull him for a ph after 80 pitches and its his turn up. He only gets two ab's by my logic. 5 ip 5 h 4 bb 4 r 3 er 6 k Cubs lose 4-2
  11. I would have picked worst outfield production as well. If a AAA outfield is better then Jacque and Pierre, maybe it is past time to go to the farm.
  12. I think to a lot of people there are two things a manager has to do: 1) the strategy. 2) the motivation Dusty seems to understand this, as he's said several times: http://www.nwherald.com/SportsSection/pro/288685421977106.php "I'm the motivator," he said. "Sometimes, as tough as it is, the motivator has to find ways to be motivated, too."
  13. (a) No they're not better - that's the point. (b) Explain the losses to the Pirates, Diamondbacks, and Giants in the same time-frame. In SF, the rookie pitchers didn't pull through. Versus Pitt & AZ the Cubs were in the midst of a massive hitting slump. Guzman pitched vs. Pitt. Sure loss. Maddux returned to earth vs. AZ. In short, the problems were the pitching and the hitting. Well, if thats all.....
  14. I'm confused...Belly is an announcer?
  15. No, I'm with you on this. I just threw that out to bust on the O's. Not Davey Johnson.
  16. You can't boo the Cubs. That would be rude and hurt their feelings. They all deserve our love and respect since they're paying us to be there.
  17. Johnson also has the distinction of being the only manager fired the same year he wins manager of the year. As bad as the Cubs are managed, it could be worse. They could be the Orioles. I've put out requests that they consider Gary Varsho if they want to go young. I'd put out a feeler to the Hitman, Don Mattingly because Girardi was so highly looked out for and Willie R. has done a pretty good job with the Mets. I think you have to at least give a courtesy interview to Brenley...I mean, you do have a manager that won the WS on payroll. That being said, I expect if they fire Dusty before the end of the year, that they'll promote from within for the rest of the season (or hire Brenley) and get serious about a full-time replacement if the new guy doesn't do better in the offseason.
  18. A lot of people got that feeling then, but there was amazing Sammy show to distract people from how bad the rest of the team was. Remember also the 2001 team was in the Wild Card spot past labor day.
  19. Credit where credit is due...that play was awesome. Shut up 40,000 Giants fans for a couple of seconds at least.
  20. Here's a hint, if a post has the word "dude" in it; it's sarcastic.
  21. Poor writing on my part...I meant lowest since 1998, not as bad as it was in the mid 1990's.
  22. I've maintained for awhile that the best former Cub that should be a manager (a managerial prospect if you will) is Gary Varsho. Sure, he's never been as high profile as Joe, never won a WS or went to an all-star game, never sat next to Girardi in the dugout... ...but he has worked his way through the Phillies organization including succesful stints as bench coach at the major league level and as a AAA manager. I'm not saying he should get this job, but he's at least as qualified as Girardi was before the start of the season.
  23. Well, we are and we aren't. Looking at this message board, it seems as though apathy to this team is at a pre-1998 high. Its not like people stop being Cubs' fans, just that when the team is being run like this, you can reprioritize things for a couple of years.
