  1. The biggest question I've had is what do you spend FA money on? Hitting or pitching? Which do you try and develop in house? Position players are much more of a sure thing, so spending money on them, there's probably a better success ratio than if you do on pitching as well, because of injuries and missed time. In my perfect world, we'd develop pitching and once it's time to hit FA, let it go and bring the next guy in. Of course, finding a couple of Kershaws doesn't seem like it's evidently all that easy of a thing to do. As far as drafting goes, I think we hit it out of the park strategy-wise this year. Position player, followed by lots of upside pitching. But, the article certainly makes trading for unproven pitching seem riskier than we probably thought. I read it a couple of months ago and forgot to post it here, but with the deadline looming and us needing pitching(and me wanting it, unless the talent is better hitting-wise), it puts things in a perspective. Maybe the thing to do(and situations have to dictate it even becoming available) is trade position players for younger, established major league pitching? Again, probably doesn't even come up all that often, but it may be the best way to acquire pitching, when and if it ever does.
  2. He'll get dealt and we'll get a guy that if we really work hard on it, we'll be able to convince ourselves fits in somewhere at the very back of our top 50 Cubs prospects lists.
  3. http://www.royalsreview.com/2011/2/14/1992424/success-and-failure-rates-of-top-mlb-prospects By far, the best article on prospects there is.
  4. Brook Lopez and 3 picks most likely around the 20ish area. There's no way that gets it done in the end.
  5. Interestingly enough, AZPhil just wrote about this tonight. I'd link, but I'm on my cell. Go to TCR to read through some of it. There are 2 different lotteries of 6 picks each. One between the 1st and 2nd rounds, and another between the 2nd and 3rd rounds. The 12 teams eligible for picks(every team gets one basically, teams can change from year to year based on revenue) are Baltimore, STL, Cleveland, Arizona, Cincy, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Tampa, Miami, Oakland, Colorado, and KC. I guess it's 13 teams getting 12 picks. It's a weighted lottery, based on last year's records and it'll be held on July 16th. The interesting part though, is these picks can be traded, starting IMMEDIATELY. So, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Theo try trading for picks, when dealing away some of our stuff. Keep in mind, only these picks and no others can be dealt.
  6. Oh, it's stupid. I wish I was a fly on the wall where Theo was hearing about this [expletive] for the first time. I'm pretty sure it got approved unanimously too, but my guess is some owners(Ricketts included) have to pick their battles. Reinsdorf and Bud worked hand in hand with this [expletive]. No doubt in my mind.
  7. Oh, and I didn't even answer your actual question. For a team to get compensation, they have to offer the player 12.5 mill on a one year deal, him turn it down, and sign with someone else. No more Type A or B. Honestly, I don't remember why 12.5 mill is the number either, but it's an average of something.
  8. I have no idea how they'll rank the players getting supplemental picks. That's a great question that I've not even thought about. The competitive balance lottery is for "small market", low revenue teams, that are deemed at a disadvantage. It's been a while since I saw the article(Jonathan Mayo) and couldn't find it just now. But, there will be 6 extra supplemental round picks awarded to those teams. I think it's 12 teams, maybe 14. Somehow, the Cards are part of this, so they'll basically get an extra pick every other year for nothing. The same teams also are involved in a second lottery for more picks as well each year. I think from teams forfeiting picks, for going over draft budget(my guess is this is usually going to be zero). Howev er r, something I'm still not clear on and it's a big deal: I think if a team loses a FA they offer the 12.5 mill to, they get the other teams pick AND a supplemental pick as well. But, it may very well be the team losing the player only gets a supplemental rounder and while the acquiring team(top 10 protected) loses their pick, that pick could conceivably be part of the 2nd lottery, making those teams get that many more picks.
  9. Still posturing. I think Appel's serious. Not so much with Gausman. Gotta wonder what Boras tried to do with Appel, the day of the draft? I guess he turned down 6 mill from Houston, which was a blessing for them. But whete did Boras want him going, because he was obviously pissed when the Pirates took him. Did he have a team lower ready to take the penalty for him? It's all I can think of.
  10. He's putting up a .292/.370/.476 line with 9 homers in AA at 19.
  11. Straight ball: I like it very much.
  12. I'm pulling for us in the Fecal League anyway, but if Appel and Gausman are both available again, it gives us a much better chance at a bigtime pitcher, as long as we're picking top 6-7.
  13. The Cards are one of the teams that gets in the new competitive lottery [expletive] for supplemental picks too, so every other year or so, they can count on adding an extra pick for nothing, making it easier for them to come off guys in trades like this.
  14. They've won enough WS to where if they win one with Demp, my night would be ruined, but I'd get over it quickly. Plus, they'd have to overpay as it is, since we wouldn't send him there with other comparable packages sitting there. Hell, maybe we could snag Rosenthal AND Jenkins out of them, which would be a coup.
  15. Wow, I probably have Rosario somewhefe in the 15-20 range right now. His stuff seems good too, why are you down on him?
  16. I think I'm a tad higher on Eovaldi than most, but I'd love to get him in a one for one deal with Dempster. Maybe Tampa sends us Alex Cobb in a LaHair or Soto deal? Possible we could get a Hutchison or Delgado type in a Garza deal too. I think I expect one major leaguer to slot immediately into the rotation from these deals, maybe two. If so, after Shark and Wood, it probably leaves at most 2 spots, and possibly just one. I doubt we give anyone more than a 3 year deal personally and if I had to bet, I'd say two is the max we go. Liriano or Marcum, maybe even both, feel like the types we go after this offseason.
  17. I like Buckel quite a bit, even if he's a tad undersized. I'm not thrilled with Perez, but as a 2nd piece, I'd be fine with him. Grimm is solid, so is Luke Jackson, Loux is a lottery ticket, but a good one if he can stay healthy. and since he's a local kid, Neil Ramirez has talent. He's a project now, of course. Scheppers wouldn't be bad either. Or you could opt for Olt or Odor as a top piece, if you want quality over the quantity approach. But saying that sells the arms a bit short, in my mind, as I see quality there as well, just the ability to get more of them.
  18. Rangers in on Garza, per Levine. Now we're talkin. Great system for us to trade with.
  19. What would be the reason for that? College ball is too risky? Maybe so. I doubt an independent league team is going to let him throw 149 pitches in a game.
  20. I don't care about wins and losses in the minors, but today's Chiefs loss probably sucked. Up 3-1 in the 9th, 2 outs, bases loaded, with a 2-2 count, game gets put in a rain delay. First pitch after the delay was a bases clearing double.
  21. Wasn't it a Saturday Game of the Week? Of course, I have no idea if he was still doing those at that point in his career.
  22. Soler is older than the rest. Yeah, I know. Just figuring they'll take it slow with him this year for sure. And he'd have to really show quite a bit to be placed in Daytona to start with in 2013, which is where I fully expect baez to be by then. I guess it's going to depend on exactly how raw Soler is. If he rakes, all bets are off, he could shoot past Baez, which would obviously be awesome to see. :D
