  1. You are weird. Why do you care about Paul Sullivan's future employment prospects and networking capability? You whined about him throwing the team under the bus, but he can risk his contacts all he wants. It's up to him how he treats a story and the potential ramifications. You are blaming him for a story getting out when the person who had the ability to keep the story getting out, and the motivation to keep the story from getting out, and responsibility to keep the story from getting out was Theo. He didn't have to say what he said. Don't get mad at a reporter for reporting. It's separate. I want Sullivan fired, so I'm glad as [expletive] he's a dumbass. But, if it were me, I'd want to advance myself as much as possible with a new regime. And THAT was a perfect chance for someone to help themselves out wth Theo. As for the weird comment, I honestly think you're better than that, and have never stooped to insults in our disagreements before, so I'm not returning the insult.
  2. Back on the original topic, I've heard this Finley guy mentioned from Boston as a replacement. Was it a one year agreement we wouldn't rob them of personnel or was it longer than that?
  3. Hardly any of those guys you mentioned are beat writers. That's a ridiculously silly statement to make. Protect the team? From a networking standpoint, absolutely. Especially in this case actually. Since it's obvious none of the current guys are "in" well enough to break stories with any regularity right now. Do you want to be the best at your job or do you want to be an old broken down hack? If you're looking out for the Cubs, it's probably much more likely that you'll get info from them. If you do the exact opposite, it's likely they'll keep you out of the loop entirely. And again, without knowing, my guess is the Trib could easily find and would probably want someone writing about the Cubs that actually has access to them. Which after this thing, I honestly expect them to slowly start freezing Sullivan out.
  4. I added those guys after I typed the first part. Probably should have erased that. But, between Sullivan, Rogers, Greenberg, Kaplan, Rosenbloom, Wittenmyer, Rozner, Levine, there's far more idiots writing about the Cubs, than there are solid guys. As for Sullivan, I disagree completely with you. Whether it's true or not, he threw the team he covers under the bus, jeopardizing a relationship with another team. To me(granted, I'm not a journalist) but you should at least attempt to protect the team you cover somewhat. If for no other reason, they may give you more to work with, in the long run, for helping them out.
  5. In all honesty, our beat writers(other than Bruce, who's excellent) are flat out pathetic. How do they even still have jobs? Sullivan, in particular, after the Dempster insinuation.....I just can't see how anyone within the Cubs organization has anything to say to him, making him completely useless. Also unsure as to whether Mooney is considered a beat guy or not, but I like him. And Padilla seems OK as well.
  6. Scott Nelson, director of player ops is being reassigned.
  7. Ari Kaplan got fired, then got rehired in a consulting role.
  8. Are you really going to get multiple "first-round talents?" The "first-round talents" that fall don't seem like they are going to be all that impressive in the new CBA. in order for it to make sense, you kind of have to. You'd probably have to go into a draft with a list of guys you perceive as 1st round type talents. After the 1st round is over, see how many are left. Again, it HAS to be a strong draft too, to where your original list is probably 60 deep or more. And there'd have to be enough signability question marks to where you've got 30 or so left over after the supplemental round. Other teams would immediately catch on after you took another one in the 2nd and 3rd, which would be necessary, because teams definitely are willing to punt rounds away to add a 2nd guy. After you did it first 3 rounds, my guess is most are off the board, but you'd need to do it twice more for it to truly be successful. Because you have to come out ahead from the loss of two 1sts and all the money lost as well, so you'd better make it count. Has to be the right time, deep draft, and a willingness to lose picks, so it'd have to be once we're good again, so you're not punting top 10 picks away.
  9. With Bush and Wilken safe and Fleita out, what other Hendry holdovers are even lwft? Maybe the stats guy Ricketts forced him to hire? I guess I could see Theo telling Tom his heart was in the right place with the hiring, but we can take it from here.
  10. I didn't say anything last night, but what good is low 90's with downward plane when your secondary pitches suck? in the end, not much. Ask Volstad.
  11. I guess I kind of agree with KG on Volstad: Kind of hard to give up on a 6'8 dude that throws low 90's, with a downward plane. But I have given up, it was just kind of hard. He really [expletive] sucks.
  12. Mooney just tweeted others could find out their fate's today as well. Randy Bush: I'm looking at you.
  13. Good. I wonder if a large part of this has to do with our big money IFA's from last year struggling so much. Acosta has to be the modern day Cerrano.
  14. It's hard to know for sure. I saw a blurb a few weeks ago mentioning us as having signed 3 guys. But then, I noticed them showing up immediately in boxscores, so who knows if they were just signed or not? Since most of these guys sign contracts for the following season. Possible though, as all of these guys were slightly older. At any rate, the lower level signings are usually hard to find. It's gotten quite a bit vetter though, as it seems like 50k and higher gets reported for the most part. My guess is they've signed lots of very low salary guys, but are leaving some money, in case another solid player emerges.
  15. Versatile. Adequate or better defensively at 2B, SS, and 3B. Solid approach, gap power, maybe a bit more. Very heady, field general type. Should be a major leaguer, upside is debatable, but I like him quite a bit. Toonster has seen him quite a bit and likes him a bunch.
  16. He's raw and projectable. Probably worth a flyer. He'll most likely be in AA next year.
  17. Off topic, but don't see you talking football much, so I didn't know you were a Bears fan. So how did you wind up as a Celtic fan?
  18. I'm thinking that was sarcasm guys. Right?
  19. What are the odds of anything more than a stopgap LT ever hitting FA though? No clue what the FA class looks like for next year, but those guys will either get locked up or franchised. Too early for me to be remotely intelligent about next years draft either, but a quick glance at Walterfootball's early mock at least appears to set up decently for us. Doesn't appear to be any franchise tackles, but 5 or 6 guys they are currently projecting as mid to late 1st rounders at least. FWIW, he's got us picking 27th, so at least he thinks we're going to be very solid.
  20. I'm assuming Daury Torrez is a control pitcher, as he now has allowed 4 walks in 69.2 innings, with 49 k's and has a 1.16 ERA at this point. He just turned 19, 2nd season in the DSL, and is 6'3, 170, at least lending to the belief he's projectable. At any rate, I guess he's a guy that gets brought over after the season.
  21. It is much, much, much more valuable to have an .800 OPS hitting SS than an .850 OPS hitting 1B and they should be paid accordingly. Without looking at numbers, my guess is the 1B is probably .050 OPS better than normal, league average production, while the SS is probably .150 OPS better. And yes, I definitely see Castro EASILY becoming an .800 OPS fixture.
  22. No way. They are at best passable. The problem with counting them is Williams was the first top half of the draft OL pick in a decade. They were playing catch up at that time, and still should be. It's a 5 man group. You can't just draft 2 over 11 years and say you've addressed it. It's a 5 man position group that requires 6 or 7 over a season. You need to spend multiple draft picks on them, not constantly sign other teams castoffs. They have effectively ignored the group in the draft for a decade. I think they'll be solid enough to get by. Technically speaking, there's more than a solid amount of teams that are better equipped than we are obviously, but I doubt our group will be bad enough to truly be an actual detriment. As for your 2nd point, I won't argue. It'd be dumb too. I do think that there should be a lineman drafted in the middle rounds every year, but I did mention that too. I just don't want to spend BIG money on interior O-Linemen. Hopefully next year, we can draft LT in the 1st somehow, with an inside guy maybe in the 4th or 5th as well.
  23. Is there much of a difference in level between the GCL and the NWL, for instance? Part of me sees it as semantics, because not every team has a Rookie League team AND a Short Season League team, as some just have two Rookie levels instead. Buxton just got moved from one Rookie league team to another and it was considered a promotion somehow. So I do wonder how much more advanced the NWL is, for instance, over the Appalachian League possibly? Because if there is a fairly significant difference, the teams without a Short season team therefore should run into more issues developing players, since they basically HAVE to skip a level, from Rookie League to A Ball.
  24. But that's not really true though. Williams and Carimi count. Granted, I'd like to see some 3/4 round OG picks. But I personally don't want to delegate a bunch of money on the inside offensively.
