  1. I've missed most of the day, has Grilli signed or was it a false report?
  2. Wants someone to go to 3 years. I'm fine with it, if we do.
  3. I figure we'll add one more SP, likely from Marcum/McCarthy/Liriano. At least one more decent reliever, either Grilli, Howell, or Uehara. Plus one of the Cuban defectors, with the rest of the team being filled out by league minimum guys or very low salaries. My guess is payroll winds up right around 100 mill, if this is the route we take.
  4. Can't link it from my cell, but Frankie Piliere(now at PerfectGame) did his Cubs top 10 today. Soler at 1.
  5. Unless we plan on Campana being on the roster, we definitely need another OFer. Without looking them up, Brett mentioned Schierholtz' splits against lefties aren't that bad. Not sure if this was mentioned, but Heyman said he turned down 2/5 from someone. He also has an extra year of control, if we decide to offer him arb after 2013.
  6. Personally, I think Appel would slot into BA's overall top 25. That means he'd fall anywhere from 1-4 for us, at this time next year. My main reason for wanting him is strictly due to him being ready very soon. Stanek is probably my favorite, at the moment, but not by much. Appel's probably a bit safer though(for a pitcher) and if he's a legit 3 almost immediately, I'd be perfectly happy with that.
  7. As much as I'm in favor of the rebuild, I fully acknowledge the loss of expectations. I'm sitting here hoping this move doesn't keep us from getting Grilli.
  8. Not knowing when this or the Fujikawawa signings become official, but'd put the 40 man at 39. Leads me to believe we'll sell or trade(better be this one) the Rule 5 pick tomorrow. Even then, needing an everyday 3B, likely a bullpen arm or two, probably another SP too- we've probably got a trade coming soon. No roster flexibilityty at all right now. Maybe DFA Clevenger, Campana, or Lendy Castillo?
  9. I kind of find myself leaning towards Appel myself. He could possibly begin the 2014 season in the major league rotation. He's very likely to be a mid rotation guy at least, possibly much more. And as a senior, his leverage can't be much. Could possibly get him a tad under slot, which wouldn't be a bad thing, in giving us a bit extra to throw at other guys later. Not to mention, he's still considered the best SP available, at this point.
  10. I'm with you 95% of the time, but this year feels a bit different. I'm halfway expecting us to trade the pick, after some speculation on that. Houston evidently is planning on making multiple picks.
  11. Hell, I'd settle for a "good" rumor even.
  12. If Soriano is dealt and I have serious doubts that he will be, my guess is our everyday LFer is the return.
  13. They evidently are looking at trading Ellsbury. No clue what they may target for him, but they're looking up at every team in that division right now, especially the Rays and Blue Jays. The Yanks are old, but still have more talent than they do and the Orioles are fairly young, more talented, and may have a big move in them this offseason. Napoli and Victorino are both guys you sign to compete immediately. They're regressing and the 2nd and 3rd years of each of those deals likely aren't very helpful.
  14. The Red Sox are still very likely to finish last in the East. What they've done thus far is Hendry-esque patchwork [expletive] that never works, is a gigantic waste of money, but maybe gets you from 70 wins to 74. I hope those 4 wins are worth the 77 mill and counting, you've thrown out the window to get them.
  15. Kazmir is hitting 94 again evidently and is supposedly signing soon with someone. If we're taking flyers, thats the guy I want to take one on. He's still just 28 somehow.
  16. Anyone know how Lake stacks up to Derek Dietrich? Pretty close, in my opinion. Lake has more upside, both likely project as utility types. Personally, I'm OK with not making the deal. If they'd have taken Watkins, I'd have pulled the trigger.
  17. According to ABTY, 5 teams have checked in on Soriano. Marlins wanted Lake for Escobar and we've checked in on Jeff Franceour.(as part of platoon, I assume)
  18. Not sure how I feel about that. LOL Honestly, I'd be OK with both Reynolds and Keppinger(even at 3-12)
  19. If Betancourt gets a major league deal from the Cubs, it proves their seriousness. For Carlos Rodon.
  20. Guess they're out on Greinke.
  21. Pagan had 318 at bats with the Cubs in his age 25/26 seasons. He went .254/.309/.415 with 16 doubles, 4 triples, 9 homers, and 8 steals. There was no reason at all for us to just give him away.
  22. Actually, ABTY is the one that said the Cubs are "pretty far along" on an Escobar trade. As for getting Delgado, he also said the Cubs and Braves would revisit those talks in the offseason. FWIW, Frank Wren is heading to the Dominican to check on Delgado and Teheran after the meetings.
  23. I'm not sure I've seen a deal yet, other than Guthrie perhaps, that "massive overpay" entered my mind.
