  1. Thats cool. If I'm wrong on the stuff, then I'm wrong. I guess I want to see more results though, before I'm comfortable giving him north of 75 mill, based mainly on his age and peripherals that have yet to transfer into results. Granted, he does have 2 years to change my mind.
  2. I don't want either, but I think I'd rather it be dumb than chesp. The jury is obviously still out, either way. Of course its disconcerting about our payroll. I am happy in the fact that if we HAVE to operate with a midlevel payroll, we have a FO thats capable enough to do it. But, in no way, do I think that we SHOULD have to. At least not longterm. I'm pinning my hopes on a TV deal that had better change things quite a bit. And my guess is Theo is hoping for the same.
  3. Is it? I thought he was more of a refined, pitchibility type from the time he was drafted. Am I wrong about that?
  4. So when the Ricketts add on a huge financial burden over the next 5 years for stadium rehabs, we'll somehow be in a better financial state? And somehow Snidley Zell managed to pull the wool over those backwoods simpleton Rickettses who managed to pull the wool over the infantile Epstein? From what I read, it limits the amount they're available to spend on payroll. It doesn't mean Ricketts is tapped out. It gave Zell more money this way somehow. At any rate, it keeps them from paying it down quickly. The renovations are a cash deal as it is, from everything I've read and are considered a separate entity that won't do anything but help the baseball ops department by increasing revenue streams, potentially as soon as they begin.
  5. Of course they're highly profitable. Thats not the debate. The debate is whether the type deal Zell structured their financing around actually prevents them from spending for a period of time. There have been articles mentioning this.
  6. You think? Honestly, I'd be pissed. He's got 2 years of (not cheap) control left, followed by hitting FA at a very young age, which will net him a very solid deal on the FA market. I'm not seeing the upside there myself. GB pitcher, with an uptick in K% currently(obviously good), but has always been hit hard and has never been considered a guy with elite stuff. His age could net him a much larger FA deal than what I'd be even remotely comfortable paying to what I consider a 4/5 type, with 3 upside. I'd rather pay an older, better pitcher every couple of years, than him on a 5-6 year deal.
  7. I think this is ridiculous. He may well have been taken advantage of by Zell, but it certainly wasn't due to naivety. I'm much more inclined to believe it was due to the fact that he was the only one that wanted the Cubs badly enough to agree to the deal as it's structured. Isn't that naivety? Wouldn't you wait it out until he caved in to your terms, if you were the last true, willing bidder?
  8. I think he's extremely naive and was taken advantage of by Zell myself. With the debt structure and all, I'm actually of the belief he couldn't spend more right now. That said, neither is a good scenario for us to have.
  9. How is this "pretty apparent?" After all we have renovations to pay for. But after the prospect haul we bring in from Baez and Soler we should be ready to bring in waves upon waves in 2019 right when the Comcast deal ends. And we're hamstringing ourselves financially, this didn't need to happen. Tom Ricketts decided he wanted it to. As for your last comment, what do you mean? By being naive and agreeing to this type of deal with Zell? Or do you mean something else?
  10. I may have went a bit far there, but if a Japanese import or bigtime Cuban is available at that point, I'll feel much better about our chances at landing them then, than I do currently. Ricketts DID put himself in this position and until he DOES actually carry a large payroll after letting it drop ever sense taking ownership, you're right, I definitely used the wrong phrasing, at the least. I'll amend it to say thats when I suspect our payroll will begin to trend back upwards.
  11. My guesses on returns for Garza..... Red Sox- Webster or Barnes and Bryce Brentz Blue Jays- Drabek and Gose Indians- Bauer and IFA money Nats- AJ Cole and Nate Karns Rangers- Olt or Rougned Odor and one of Perez, Luke Jackson or Justin Grimm Rockies- Pomeranz and one of Tyler Anderson or Chad Bettis Diamondbacks- Delgado and one of David Holmberg or Andrew Chafin Pirates- Josh Bell, with one Alan Hanson or Gregory Polanco, and Kyle McPherson
  12. I think its pretty apparent 2015 is when the pocketbook opens up. I don't expect the playoffs in 2014 at this point, but I do expect competitiveness, maybe even buying at the deadline on longer term pieces. But it really looks like we are hamstrung financially to the point that the new TV deal is our only hope.
  13. No, Bryant didn't come out of no where. He was offered 2 mill+ out of HS and went in to this year as a likely top 5 pick.
  14. I'm not worried about Bryant signing. Its just a dick move on his and Boras' parts if it costs us Clifton and Alamo in the process. That said, Alamo is heading somewhere, apparently for a long time, according to his Twitter. I'm still optimistic on getting all 3. Bryant around 6 mill, Clifton around 500k and Alamo around 300k.
  15. The Marlins return is awful, even if Nolasco is average. I'm not sure whether it affects us or not, to be honest. I'm definitely tempering my expectations though. I just hope we deal him soon. Seems like the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Indians, Rangers, Nats, and Diamondbacks are the most likely suitors right now. With the Pads, Giants, Rockies, Pirates, Phils, Angels, and Royals on the periphery. With him being the best guy out there, its better to do it now, than wait for other ghys to show up on the market.
  16. Blind squirrel, nut, all that. I just figured with Torreyes gone and Alcantara playing some 2nd, it made sense. Even if he struggles. For some reason though, I think he's going to be fine.
  17. Lake with his 4th HR. I hope both Watkins and him get a months worth of major league at bats somehow this year.
  18. Tseng is being courted by the Twins, according to Sanchez. Saw yesterday the Pads were closing in on Perez. If we actually are after some of the big names left, its flying under the radar.
  19. After seeing what value we gave Houston for IFA space, if we try and acquire a mill or so(which basically keeps us out of the penalty and enough to sign a 500k type) Vitters comes to mind for me. Not sure he'd bring that much back honestly(not a slight to him, I'm still holding out a bit of hope if he gets healthy). But he's likely fallen somewhat out of favor, has been overtaken by Junior Lake, and may still have a few teams that like him enough, to give us a little value back. That seems a better alternative than using a major league piece to do the same thing.
  20. Its nothing against Cecchini, for me. It's wrong on my part and I admit it, but with Baez, Bryant, Villanueva, and Candelario all in our system as longterm 3rd possibilities, I'd literally want any other position(other than SS or 1B and I'd be OK with a SS possibly) to be the centerpiece of a Garza deal. Pitching, pitching, and more pitching. Maybe a C. And I know I'm wrong for passing on what may be a slightly better player, due to positional need.
  21. So evidently, Skaggs is in play for Gallardo. Really, KT? He's legit scared to death of making a big trade with Theo, isn't he?
  22. We supposedly outbid the Dodgers on him, Magic just closed it down for them. Puig didn't get the pub Soler or Cespedes did, partly because of how rushed his entire process went. Cespedes had an entire offseason to be talked about and get seen. Soler had that, plus longer. No one knew Puig was going to be available until about two weeks before the IFA deadline. He had one or two workouts, that was it. Some teams had sent scouts to Mexico to see him multiple times long before he was eligible. At the exact time he became eligible, he was slightly out of shape. Some teams, late to the game anyway, decided he wasn't worth the hype, without even doing any real scouting. The publications only got reports from those last workouts with multiple teams in attendance. The ones that were on him all along had tried keeping it quiet, to keep a bidding war from starting. Which was inevitable, coming on the market with two weeks to go until no more IFA's could be signed under the old rules.
  23. Badler posted a scouting report on Jimenez within the last 30 minutes and said he's finalizing the parameters of a deal with the Cubs. Sanchez, maybe unrelated, but doubtful, says agreements turn into signed contracts. This may very well just be semantics after all.
