  1. http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_1970.shtml#NLmvp http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_1972.shtml#NLmvp Billy Williams getting screwed on 2 MVP votes, or the catcher-factor?
  2. He's also a former Hendry target. Intriguing possibility...
  3. Oh man, then I actually do feel bad for Sox fans that have to watch their broadcasts. Cause that guy was ridiculous. Green Suit Guy needs to have a cage match with Pink Hat Guy this.
  4. Why are you using errors to determine how good a defender is? It's not perfect obviously but someone who is close to leading the league in errors for his position isn't having too good of a season. Lee has been good but to his normal level so far. I don't that's really true at all. All that means is he's botched a few routine plays. Routine plays don't make a defender great. The things that make Lee a great defender have still been there all season. Errors also could mean a defender botched a tough play that he made look easy. Perhaps an infielder has very good range and gets to a lot more balls than other defenders, so he gets more chances to botch plays. Crede?
  5. I think it's clear that Lou just doesn't have patients for young players who make fundamental mistakes. Hill's lack of control, Murton and EPatt on defense. It might not be the best approach (especially with Hill), but I think of it as "If you're not going to hit and you want to stay up here, at least play fundamentally sound"
  6. Lou and Gallagher both said something like Lou was trying to light a fire under Gally's ass.
  7. That's just [expletive]. I wonder how good he would be if he had access to today's training methods? Would the pitchers he faced also have access to those training methods? Correct, so it probably would have equaled out and he still would have done the same damage. Which is sick. I've always thought of him as one of the all-time greats, but looking at his numbers, Williams was ridiculous. Too bad he's now cryogenically frozen in two pieces. Sad ending. I was just reading up on it

  9. Coke is a great default, but I do enjoy Squirt from time to time.
  10. Gehrig looks surprisingly like Mario Lopez in that photo.
  11. I think what may end up happening is a rule mandating a certain thickness of the bats. While maple is a problem because of how it splinters, players need to have thinner handles to account for the fact that maple is a harder and heavier than ash. The combination of thin handles and heavy barrels really contributes to bats breaking.
  12. I don't think there's anything in the rulebook, but I always saw it as that gray area between trying to get an advantage and being classless. Kind of like when A-Rod yelled "I got it!" while approaching 3rd base against Toronto (I think) last season. It also brings up the age-old debate over playing the game "the right way". That being said, a large part of Spygate was over stealing signs as well. They were videotaped in advance and it's a completely different sport, but it's interesting how it can be so clean-cut in football and not in baseball.
  13. I'm certainly not saying that stat doesn't have any value, because honestly I have no idea what it is, but Wood is #32 (just behind our old friend Ohman). Certainly you would have to agree he's a top 10, if not top 5, reliever in the game. It's expected wins over a replacement level pitcher. However, it goes a step further by adjusting for quality of hitters faced. That way you can't just come in and face garbage players each game and show off a .80 WHIP -- it's showing how good the guys you faced were and how much better you were than a replacement pitcher.
  14. lol you could do this with any number
  15. This has nothing to do with the topic, but it's really creepy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krXP_TUZqsk&feature=related
  16. It's amazing how many Cubs fans have pulled a John McCain and totally flip/flopped on Edmonds. I'd say it's more of a John Kerry flip-flop. A McCain flip-flop would be cheering for both the Cubs and Cardinals at the same time and trying to say he was the #1 fan of both.
  17. http://susanmernit.com/blog/images/rainierwolfcastle-aka-mcbain.gif "Maybe you are all homosexuals too!"
  18. That's because he's still a good player and is regarded as a leader and a good clubhouse guy who set examples for others. Sure, we don't really care about that crap, but players probably think it's important. You can be overrated and still be a very good player. The reason Jeter is overrated is because people think he's one of the best to put on a uniform when he's actually the second-best SS on his own team.
  19. But we already HAVE Bedard -- didn't you guys see Hill last year? He was just like Bedard 2 years ago! -paraphrase from off-season threads. Oops!

  21. I hated the pick-up much more because I thought he was going to suck and block Pie vs. because he was a hated Cardinal. Actually, I think it makes it sweeter when we beat up on Stl.
  22. Alan Dunn, who was rumored to have gotten into a few spats with Rothschild over Rich Hill and how the Cubs were handling him in 2005 and 2006. This coming after JP Riccardi said that Alan Dunn has no passion for coaching
  23. I have a feeling JP didn't just say that out of nowhere... he's a GM and he must know some things that we don't. That being said, it was a pretty huge and embarrassing slip-up.
  24. hahahahaha he had a heartattack I could've sworn you were trying to highlight the bat-flip or the fact that it looked like it was going to hit AJP. That was a Shamylanian twist, only entertaining. Ted Turner? Is that you?
