  1. i completely agree with you. but what does "depending on who you are" mean? fans of the program v. rival fans (or disinterested fans). or did you mean by geography or age? I guess I've never thought of any particular group using any of those terms, though I've heard them regularly. No real distinction, just whichever you've heard enough times that it comes to mind at a particular moment. If I've been reading Every Day Should Be Saturday, I'd probably use Ole Miss, but if I'm talking with co-workers and they use the other one, then I might use Mississippi next time I reference them. As for the others, I pretty much always use Mizzou like OleMiss uses, uh, Ole Miss, but I've never really thought of it as strange if people refer to my school as Missouri. Well it is strange to us. I went there for seven years and am fourth generation alum and I've absolutely never heard anyone associated with the school say Mississippi. And like I said earlier I can't recall ever having an in person conversation where someone said that. Perhaps it is entirely a southern thing because of everyone's knowledge of the SEC down here. I don't necessarily have a problem with it, but I'm just not used to seeing people use it, that's why I asked about your use of it. It's pretty interesting -- but I'm sure there are some people who don't know that Ole Miss is the University of Mississippi. Same for Mizzou. Almost like Cal. My dad asked me where the University of California was the other day. I realized he was talking about Cal, but why does Berkeley get that title when there are so many University of Californias?
  2. I missed the Cutler PI blowup -- can someone explain what happened?
  3. Northwestern has a harder SOS than Boise State. Unless you're talking about preseason.
  4. Nope. Humanitarian Bowl at home versus Ohio (who lost to Ohio State by 40+, lost to Toledo, lost to Marshall, lost to Kent State).. If that doesn't show you we need a playoff bad, nothing does. Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl?
  5. can you explain your disdain for boise? The blue field. The hatred is completely irrational but they infuriate me, and I'm pretty sure it goes back to the Blue field. The Statue of Liberty play, the "America's Sweetheart" crap. The lack of any good teams on their schedule. The fact they can play one game a season and go to a BCS game. I hate Boise as much as anyone, but how is TCU any better? Their schedule is ridiculous this year!
  6. LOL. Boise belongs nowhere near the National Championship game.
  7. I was surprised to see that Pujols was worth a full win more than Gonzalez and Votto.
  8. No, but Hendry is a scout by trade. He's a bad GM, but is probably good at picking up who does/doesn't have good swing mechanics. We could point to the DeRosa and Edmonds pickups as evidence of that. Maybe he saw something he likes? Was that what happened with Barrett?
  9. The end zone thing really isnt that big of a deal. Teams switch which way they're going when quarters end, so it shouldn't be too big of a hassle. I'm more annoyed that this issue wasn't thought of beforehand.
  10. That does not make them a more national school. UM is a huge national school. I've met more Wisconsin and Iowa people in the NYC area than Northwestern. They get a higher percentage, but they don't get more actual "national" students. Thus, they aren't more national. I'd hate to get into another semantic battle with you, but there are a few ways at looking at this: 1. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest, a larger percentage of NU's population comes from outside the midwest -- correct 2. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest,A larger percentage of NU grads currently live outside the midwest -- correct(?) 3. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest,A larger number of NU undergrads come from outside the midwest --incorrect 4. Compared to other B10 schools in the midwest,A larger number of NU grads live outside the midwest -- incorrect You are defining "more" narrowly, and only applying it to statements 3 and 4. By your logic, the statement "Haiti is a more black country than the US" would be incorrect.
  11. Is that not because they are by far the smallest school, and therefore have the smallest group of alumni by default? With just over 8,000 undergrads, it's mostly that. However, Northwestern is a far more national school than any of the other Big Ten schools. Only 40% of undergrads are from the midwest. I don't see how that makes them more of a national school. As a percentage, less of their undergrad population comes from the midwest than any other Big Ten school in the Midwest. Hence, more national, less regional.
  12. This is going to be unreal. Can't wait!
  13. Or Utah just isn't any good. Are you trying to tell me their OT win over Pitt at home meant nothing???
  14. The backup is Evan Watkins. He was pretty highly recruited out of HS, is a big guy (6'6, 230) and has a cannon arm. The problem is, he's not nearly as elusive as Persa despite being pretty quick. It'll be harder for him to buy time in the pocket as he's more of a pro-style QB. Should make for an interesting game next week.
  15. Very very boring. They should've had Todd attend a game and then get yelled at to sit down by one of the octogenarian ushers on oxygen.
  16. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1181.snc4/150297_490051638342_228401243342_7275764_5917005_n.jpg SO PUMPED
  17. That's asking a lot of this team. The Bears are 3-3 under Lovie Smith in games after the bye. I'm concerned about this one. Who cares? Were they playing good teams?
  18. Rule #1: Wear an elbow guard that sticks out 4 inches and lean over the plate. Any questions?
  19. Eh, they pretty much throw for ~300 yds per game.
  20. What is January 31st? (Ryan was my boyhood hero so of course I knew things like that, and Banks is...Banks) Correct. When I got a chance to meet Ernie I told him we shared a birthday, and he said something like "Nolan Ryan and Jackie Robinson too!"
  21. How about this! Nolan Ryan, Ernie Banks, Jackie Robinson
  22. Why is everyone so high on Trammel? I'm not opposed to him by any means, but it seems like there are a lot of Trammel fans here and I'm not exactly sure why. Good MI defense teacher? Feel bad for what happened to him in Detroit? Seems like a nice guy?
  23. I sat courtside for a game last season and the ball got away from Noah while he was trying to inbound. He yells to a cheerleader "GIVE ME THE [expletive] BALL!" and then when she hands it to him he gave this cheesy smile and said a cute "thank you." It was awesome.
  24. How soon before Lebron starts shaving his head? Or before he gets a bigger headband?
  25. Good. Use the money you saved on players.
