  1. Why was Hosmer prioritized over Rizzo? Rizzo had probably already agreed to play for Italy. Had he not, I am guessing he would be playing 1B for USA right now. Really? He said that he wanted to play for the US.

  3. Kirk and Taj are out. Nash is going to have his way... Going to come down to The Kobe Stopper©

  5. That's great, but are they fruits or vegetables? since we didn't get Escobar this offseason, it hopefully doesn't matter if they're fruits or not. edit: not only was raisin faster, but his was better. :hello: Escolar is a fish actually. I think he was going for escarole He wasn't, but that also would've been a funny response.
  6. This. Tunney is a gnat in a thunderstorm right now. The city wants the Cubs to stay and maximize the revenue for both sides without the city paying for it, and the path to that resolution is obvious right now. Tunney doesn't even count as a roadblock; he's just bitching because he can right now. While I agree, relying on Chicago politicians for anything is risky at best. That's pretty pointless hyperbole; the Cubs are a huge moneymaker for the city and this has to get done to keep that going and, ultimately, make even more money. Tunney has next to no influence/power when it comes to getting this accomplished. So why haven't they told him to [expletive] off yet? Push has not yet turned to shove.

  8. If Peyton Hillis can be on the cover of Madden...
  9. Maybe I'm in the minority here -- I don't care that much about ads but would be sick if the Cubs left Wrigley. Then might I suggest that you aren't a fan of the franchise as much as you are a fan of the stadium. Take a picture, bring it home, hang it on your wall if the park is that important to you. Winning baseball matters to me and if other franchises have an advantage because they don't play in Wrigley, something is wrong and needs to be addressed. Then your suggestion would be wrong. I didn't say I wanted them to stay at all costs, but all else equal, Wrigley is very important to me. ETA: I'll also reiterate my point that, at this juncture, Wrigley is a pretty essential component of the franchise. Just like if the Cubs were to move to Rockford and change their name to the Pandas, it would feel weird, even though the Rockford Pandas are the same franchise. Would a Cubs WS won at a Schaumberg stadium taint my happiness? Of course not. But my season ticket holder status is over if won't be able to jump on the train and see my favorite team every night after work.

  11. Pretty sure a pea is a seed -- and the pod the fruit. A beet is a root vegetable. Avocado is definitely a fruit.
  12. Tunney would call that bluff. The Cubs aren't going anywhere. Ricketts is better off reconciling with Rahm -- at least their interests are aligned and the Mayor has the ability to put real pressure on Tunney if he wants to. Maybe. It depends on how far the Cubs carry it out. If the rooftop and bar owners start to panic, Tunney would have to cave. The wrigleyville businesses need Wrigley a lot more than the Cubs need Wrigleyville. Can you imagine ESPN? "New Cubs Owner Vows to Move From Wrigley" It'd be a PR nightmare for the team, and a substantial portion of the fanbase would pick up pitchforks and torches. The PR nightware could easily be spun the other way. "To remain a viable baseball franchise and to compete with the growing revenues of other teams the Cubs need to make changes to their ballpark. The special interests, Tunney and those that have been stealing from them for decades have blocked those efforts leaving the Cubs no choice but to find a new venue. " "Regrettably, it has come to this and they have forced our hand. If we are to build a winning organization and give the fans what they deserve, we have no choice but to leave our beloved Wrigley Field and find a new location." - Tom Rickettes At the end of the day, the vast majority of Cubs fans love Wrigley and want to watch the Cubs at Wrigley. At this point, it's an inseparable component of the franchise's identity. The fans would turn on Cubs ownership very quickly, especially when the statement you mentioned isn't even true. This isn't about financial viability -- it's about maximizing ad revenue. If the Cubs accepted the rooftop owners' proposal they'd still be ok. I of course side the Cubs in this matter, but a threat to leave Wrigley would be really empty and might put the team in an even worse position.

  15. http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2013/march/mlb-network-will-be-embracing-debate-next-month.html Just another show on MLBN that I won't watch. I had such high hopes for that MLBN and that it would be the anti ESPN/BBTN but instead they have just copied their style and have molded all of their shows after them. I don't watch anything on MLBN except for when they broadcast games and the draft. Clubhouse Confidential is good and I'm not sure why watching Kenny embarrassing Reynolds wouldn't be entertaining. At least someone on mainstream TV is talking about advanced stats. Yes, but advanced stats are going to be talked about in a way that perpetuates every negative stereotype about negative stats. It's going to get snarky, and Kenny and Reynolds will just dig harder into their positions (as that's the point of the show). No one will be drawn to accepting advanced stats, and few who already know about them will learn anything new. A better approach would be to use advanced stats in the context most are used to seeing traditional stats (e.g., a BBTN format).
  16. http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2013/march/mlb-network-will-be-embracing-debate-next-month.html I don't see how/why this is surprising. As much as Awful Announcing and most on this board (inc. me) hate these opinion/debate shows, they're a major driver of viewers on news and information networks (look at what's happened with Cable news, for example). FirstTake took a huge dive, but was able to use Tebow to bring itself back. It's the kind of programming many love, and others love to hate. That said, I will not be tuning-in to "MLB Now." It's just another data point in the long list of disappointing MLB Network shows.
  17. Eh, I was just doing my best from memory. Didn't meant to misrepresent what was said. Didn't mean to call you out -- it's just often a game of Telephone with this sort of thing.
  18. It was Mully and Hanley this morning. They've replayed the quote on a couple of scoreboard updates on The Score. I'll link the audio once it's posted. EDIT: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/audio/986-670-the-score-interviews/ Click on KC Johnson's interview. Just listened to the interview. It sounds like whomever quoted K.C. editorialized it a bit. On Thibs saying "Day-to-Day" "I don't think he's trying to upgrade the guy. I think he's more or less saying 'hey, he's practicing with us.'" Also implied that people could be reading too much into it. On whether he thinks Rose will be back this year: "I originally predicted he'd be back after 10 months. But given his comments to USA Today and the beat writers, and now David Aldridge, I'm predicting that he's not going to play this season. I hope I'm wrong and the fans hope I'm wrong. It just seems like this is a guy who is preparing himself to have another offseason of work."
  19. Boozer's playing tonight.
  20. Granderson too. That would hurt the Yankees just a little for Cano and Granderson to miss 50 games at the same time to start the season. Yikes, how'd I leave that out of my post?
  21. Now a report saying A-Rod, Braun, and Cano(!) will be suspended for PEDs. Not sure how credible this source is, so take it FWIW.
  22. Hard to believe he's 21 or 22 there.
  23. That crest is great.
  24. I'm in the pinstripe camp as well. I liked the all-whites, but they're a little on the bland side for me. I'd be open to variations on Sundays like other teams have done, especially if it means a new alternative logo (or a return to an older one). The walking bear kinda sucks.
  25. Same here. I love that photo.
