  1. I remember this guy was calling some of the draft signings before the deadline. No clue how legit he is outside of that or if this is his opinion....but in regards to the 3 Cubans: http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2012/1/18/2716641/cubs-interested-in-another-cuban-gerardo-concepcion This was a few days ago btw.
  2. Cespedes says the Cubs have been the most active with him. Rough translation stolen from PSD: http://www.diariolibre.com/deportes/2012/01/16/i320706_yoeni-cespedes-cubano-aguilas-cibaenas.html
  3. I know this will probably be a moot point because were focusing on pitching, but I'd still be tempted if we could get someone like montero (or maybe wil myers). I have no clue where montero would play admittedly, would have to be catcher or right field. Bur follow it up with signing cespedes, and in one offseason you could have a core/lineup of bjax, Castro, rizzo, montero, cespedes. Ridiculously young, alot of lefties, great offensive potential. If Castro improves defensively they'd all be good defenders outside of montero.
  4. I don't know if you could say Castellanos is "elite," even potentially, yet. He had a solid season in A-ball, but the numbers don't jump out at you by any means. He could be, but i'd be inclined to take the guy (Turner) who's put up numbers at high levels at a young age. The simple solution: give us both or nosoupforyou.

  6. Am I the only one that's a little "meh" on D'Arnoud? Solid prospect, good season last year, but the overall body of work doesn't really stand out to me. I mean he's definitely a good prospect, but I don't see what makes him untouchable or anything.
  7. Was thinking about this last night... Considering that IFA is only penalized the following year, while the draft can be penalized for 2 years into the future, would it make sense to alternate which one to spend crazy on each year? For instance, let's say for this season we would stick roughly to slot for the draft, but go absolutely crazy in IFA and pick up a ton of the high profile guys. The following year, we go crazy overslot everywhere in the draft, and have to stick within our $250,000 penalty for IFA. Then the next year, we'd be free to go crazy again in IFA while adhering to the penalties for the draft. Still, we could choose to sign a few top end guys in the 3rd round or so of the draft and screw worrying about organizational fillers. Seems like a way of getting a ton of talent each year while not having to go through one down year where we have to adhere to penalties on both. If you wanted to get really crazy, you could forfeit the 6th pick this year, sign some 1st round worthy guys in the supplemental/2nd round, go crazy in IFA, and then have two top picks the following year to go crazy on when you spend big in the draft. Just thinking out loud.
  8. Random, and I haven't looked into it, but I saw someone on the Reds board say that Sappelt was playing through injury during his call-up last year.
  9. Hendry deserves bonus points for allowing the next GM to plot the team's course. Meh, good point. Forgot. I concede.
  10. i was reading the twitter quotes from theo about t. wood's cost-controlled years and torreyes having an advanced contact tool playing as a teenager in full-season ball and thinking "boy jim hendry really wouldn't have said stuff like this" i will also add that hendry never, ever would have made this trade. marshall is a good player and hendry never grasped the concept of selling high or acquiring young, cost-controlled assets for an asset that is very good but about to become expensive. to be fair, hendry unloading derosa was definitely a sell high move. True, but that fact that the main reason they unloaded DeRosa was to sign Bradley makes it somewhat of a tainted win. DeRosa is a fair point, but Hendry loses points for deeming Marshall untradeable at the deadline. The least he could have done was listen (at least I think Marshall was among the Hendry self-proclaimed untouchables).
  11. I don't mean development in that he's going to suddenly develop into an ace, but he can still find a consistent middle ground between his rookie season and last season which is solid as heck given his price tag (Pretty much reiterating what you just said).
  12. Not to mention he still has a ton of room for improvement. I read (probably in this thread) that his 4-seamer is considered his worst pitch, yet he throws it more than any other offering (not surprising I suppose). Maybe a little tweaking to what he throws and how often he throws it and things could get pretty interesting.
  13. problem on the Garza trade is what teams are involved? There's a couple decent pitchers left on the market, and I wonder if some of the AL East teams decide to take a few of those guys, which could lessen demand. I'm not sure Garza brings as much as Gio/Latos unless we get competition. As for Marmol, I almost feel like it might be better for us to keep Marmol to start the year, hope he rebounds a bit, and then move him ASAP. Marlins, Yankees, Red Sox, Royals, Blue Jays, Padres have all been linked to Garza at some point. There's still plenty of options, the key is to find someone that would overpay or drive up a bidding war. A few weeks ago the PSD insider said the Yankees offered a really good package at the deadline last year and he doubts there interest has fallen off that much. Maybe we could pick up half the tab for Garza if we trade him to KC or SD and get better prospects.
  14. I'm loving all these feel good numbers, Kyle. Keep em' comin.
  15. Yeah, i've been wondering if the Cubs were choosing from a pool of players before the deal has to be official. But...I thought all 4 players had to take their physicals, so that kind of contradicts itself.
  16. I still want to deal with K.C. if we can. Maybe the Yankees.
  17. So the psd insider backtracked a bit and said he doesn't think it's Hamilton anymore but from what he's hearing we should be really happy with the deal and they are definitely not filler prospects. Quote: Originally Posted by Marlin Bystro I will say this. I don't think it is Hamilton, but we should be very happy with this one. The players coming back are not throw in types.
  18. FWIW, I don't trust this guy at all based on the Darvish stuff he threw out there. But: Would be epic.
  19. They are? I just read through the pages I missed out on and didn't see that.
  20. I know it's just fan talk, but if you're not liking this deal for some reason, read this thread. They are acting like the world is ending, and that's before the Hamilton rumors. http://www.redszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93228
  21. Yep, the money psd insider said he heard hamiltons name could be coming our way. These are the kind of details he's usually on spot with every time. Ps, check out the redszone discussion on this. They really hated wood for Marshall for about 5 pages and were hoping they were getting something else. They are going to go beserk if Hamilton ends up really being involved. I know hamiltons a controversial prospect, but this deal turns into a fleecing if he's involved at least from a value perspective at this point in time.
  22. I don't remember hearing a peep about DeJesus until the day he signed. There were plenty. Kaplan and one of the main guys like Rogers were taking about it for a week or so before we signed him. FWIW, I remembered a little more chatter too...but all I can find is that Dierkes predicted DeJesus to the Cubs in MLBTR's free agent predictions. There is no other mention of DeJesus on these boards prior to the actual signing. Here was Kaplan. http://www.csnchicago.com/blog/cubs-talk/post/Will-the-Cubs-move-Garza?blockID=602108&feedID=661&awid=6700972948171098335-914 2 days before we signed DeJesus I believe. I remember Rogers or Sullivan mention him too though.
