  1. Hoyer said today that the 3 areas that we're focusing on this offseason are improving the defense, getting more left-handed offensively (heh), and starting pitching depth. Another subtle hint at trying for Prince? http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c_id=chc&content_id=19996259
  2. It really seems like a lot of guys might be available, most notedly Danks/Floyd and Quentin. I've brought up Quentin's name before a a great buy low candidate, and the few responses I got were pretty negative. It seems like everyone and their mother knows Quentin will be dealt, so I have a hunch the pricetag won't be too crazy. I know the defense would probably leave alot to be desired, but at the same time, we're going to need to add some impact bats from somewhere. Thoughts on Quentin, or on what possible packages for Danks or Floyd might look like?

  4. Sveum meeting with Boston again on Tuesday, including the owners. Might be their guy.

  6. I thought the whole point of nixing the Madson deal was to not overspend on a [expletive] reliever.
  7. Not a ton of info, but someone asked David Schuster (the score) on Facebook if the Cubs or Sox are interested in Cespedes and he replied "I heard the Cubs will inquire".
  8. The title of that article made me LOL for some reason. "Kaplan: Royals Interested in Zambrano": By David Kaplan
  9. Thanks for posting that radio tidbit on Mackinin. I've seen people here say that he's good with stats, but he just sounded like a typical old fart when talking to the media. I was doubting it based upon first impression.

  11. It didn't sound like anything too serious, but a poster in the comment section on chicagonow (John Arguello's blog) mentioned that MLB radio mentioned "the Cubs may be kicking the tires on Joe Nathan ".
  12. Considering most big name guys don't sign until December, no. Maybe preliminary interest, but I doubt anything on specific numbers yet.
  13. I think you're right. Every description I've read/heard of him mentions how intelligent he is. Combine that with his penchant for statistical analysis and it seems like he's right in Theo's wheelhouse. I was interested to hear that Brian Cashman was prepared to hire him in New York last year had Joe Girardi left. He's definitely highly respected in baseball circles. I texted my friend 4 weeks ago that my bold prediction was that Mike Maddux is the next Cubs skipper, so i'm sticking to that since it would be awesome that I pretty much called it out of nowhere. From the things I do know, he's great with pitchers, a great interview (I think he'd give the best interview based upon hearing him talk), he's a hot name with Texas' recent success, he's got the ties to Greg (not that it should be that big of a deal), and he gets along really well with players. I'm not going to pretend I know his statistical/offensive philosophies, but if he's getting an interview with Theo i'd imagine he's not stupid. Plus, here's a funny video of him buzzin' off four loco.
  14. If they're looking to simply dump him to save money, which it looks like they might (5.2 mill most likely), then it might be worth it to throw him into the backend and find out. Depends what other options are lined up for us though.

  16. Are the home and away clubhouses the same? I thought I remembered that the Cubs clubhouse is fine and up to date, while they just left the away clubhouse crappy and with things like bad hot water systems and stuff. I might be completely off, but I thought I remembered reading that awhile ago.
  17. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/assets_c/2011/10/mackanin-thumb-609x343-54727.jpg It had more to do with the silver hair when I saw him.
  18. Interesting. That's quite different than most managerial searches. Most are done rather privately with little comment from the candidates. Unfortunately, I do not trust the Chicago media to ask the questions that I'd like to hear for the most part. I think Boston might be doing something similar; they had a Sveum and Mackinin video commenting on the prospect of coaching the Red Sox on ESPNBoston.com I think it was. Short clip, and I don't know if other media was there and asking questions. Sveum sounded pretty boring, Mackinin looked like some weird hybrid of Joe Maddon and Piniella.

  20. Who? Sveum, Maddux, and Francona i'd assume.
  21. From a poster on prosportsdaily:
  22. Correct me if I'm wrong but he pretty much sucks in the field, can't stay healthy and is unreliable at the plate. He's got his faults, but still strikes me as an excellent buy low opportunity in terms of risk/reward. He's only 29 still. He hasn't had an OPS lower than .820 in the last 4 years outside of one really injury plagued year, though he does usually miss a decent chunk of games. Still, if I could get his production for 130 games (reasonable) + playoffs (hopefully), i'd take it. Anyways, we're getting a bit off the Pujols/Fielder topic, but I just thought i'd throw his name out there.
  23. 1b, starting rotation. If you really wanted to, you could probably upgrade 2b or CF with a free agent as well. They could use help at any OF position. On that note, nabbing Quentin for RF could help replace a good chunk of Aramis' production, it seems the White Sox could want to deal him this offseason. The Sox strike me as the team that makes the occasional dumb trade, maybe we could get lucky.
  24. MLBTR posted a link with what they say are very accurate arbitration projections....here is the Cubs. Cubs (6) * Matt Garza - $8.7MM * Geovany Soto - $4MM * Randy Wells - $2.2MM * Jeff Baker - $1.4MM * Blake DeWitt - $1.2MM * Koyie Hill - $900K http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/projected-arbitration-salaries.html#more
