  1. And the early '00s. Check out 2002: .333/.415/.493 154 games, 204 hits, 19 homers, 102 RBIs. Hard to believe he only came in 10th in MVP voting that year. He's got a lifetime OBP of .381. I realize it probably doesn't make sense, but he is such a great player who I think was actually under the radar a bit in NY, if that's possible, when compared to Jeter and other teammates. He still plays in the outfield by the way -- only played 30 games as DH last year because of injuries to Sheff and Matsui.
  2. Just wondering if he would make sense on a 1-year deal for CF. He's 38, but he can still produce and has a bit of pop. The Yankees are saying they don't know if they have room for him next season.
  3. Fox is reporting the Giants might be targeting Manny.
  4. once again jim insanely overpays for a market that isn't even there Isn't this a GM who outbid himself for Burnitz?
  5. LOL. That reminds me of Jay Johnstone's book. He talked about how Moe Drabowsky used to call the other teams bullpens and disguise his voice to sound like the opposing pitching coach and he'd say "Get Jones up" or whatever. Moe also used to make calls from the Kansas City bullpen, which for some reason was a live phone. He would call Hong Kong and order Chinese food from the KC visitors' bullpen. Funny funny stuff.
  6. Just remembered this one today and thought I'd post it to see if anyone else does. It was I think 1984. Wrigley Field, top of the 9th, Cubs up by a run or so. The other team, I want to say it was the Phillies, had like the bases loaded with 1 out. Someone hits a smash linedrive up the middle and it hits Big Lee Smith and freakishly floats over and lands on the fly in Bowa's glove. Bowa takes a couple of steps to 2nd to complete the game-ending double play and get the Cubs out of a huge mess. Harry is like: "The good Lord wants the Cubs to win!!!! The good Lord wants the Cus to win!!!" That still cracks me up. Anyone else remember that call?
  7. Over/under on how many times he predicts the hitter K's on a slider low and away? I'd LOVE to see Stone back in the booth. I don't mean to single you out vance, but I think the low-and-away slider joke has been overplayed. It's not as if Stone never offered a LOT more interesting and non-trivial insights than that. I don't think it's overplayed. I think Stone's use of that was overplayed. He offered a lot of interesting insights. But by the end, he was just calling for sliders low and away on every pitch. It is overplayed, but we all have selective memory on certain things. It's funny ... I remember Stoney for calling for a pitcher to get a guy out with high heat ("look for Prior to run up the ladder again here") much more than the low and away slider. Ah yes, the old "face high fastball" line. ACtually that was a pretty effective pitch in '03 for our power pitchers.
  8. It is a strategic asset in that it creates synergies with WGN TV, WGN radio and the newspaper. I guess it depends on which assets they keep. A media syndication executive who is a friend of mine thinks they will keep their Chicago assets, including the Cubs, and sell off all the other papers, i.e. LA Times, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Hartford, ect.
  9. It would be nice to have a PH off the bench that can get on base. When was the last time the Cubs had a high OBP PH?
  10. I'm sure "Little Michael and the boys" will be fine :) My brother's injury was pretty severe, and he went on to father 3 kids.
  11. That happened to my brother, when he was catching in college. he caught a foul tip that somehow got past his cup. It messed him up big time. He was in the hospital for a while and it laid him out for months. His scrotum swelled up like a water baloon. It can be a very serious injury.
  12. This team needs a control freak. This team on the field now is lazy and simply doesn't care about winning. They are losers and have no problem being labled that. Amen. What has 3 years of laid-back "let the vets be vets" gotten us? Would Girardi tolerate Jock's base-running brain freezes? I hope he would not.
  13. You'd have to bring Marla Collins out of retirement to run around scantily clad in the outfield if you are gong to relive the true Benny Hill experience. Maybe she could chase Yosh Kawana around with a broom because he got too frisky with her.
  14. Is anyone else getting force-fed Little House on the Prarie instead of the game? It just baffles the mind that Fox would deny me baseball in the pennant stretch and instead give me Laura Ingalls Wilder.
  15. In retrospect, Riggs wasn't all that bad.
  16. I remember the summer of '77 like it was yesterday. That was the first year we got cable and it had Channel 9. The Cubs had a pretty good team that year and Sutter emerged as a filthy closer. I remember that splitter. It would roll up there across the middle of the plate and you could see hitters salivating over what they thought was a big fat meatball. And then boom, it would just disappear and they would swing over it. It looked like a ball being rolled off the edge of a table, that;s how severe the drop was in that pitch. Remember when the organist used to play the Alka Selzer theme song whenever Sutter came in? "Plop, plop fizz, fizz, oh what a relief he is..." Great memories.
  17. I remember last year a lot of us felt we let one get away in Sisco, but no one talks about him here anymore. I looked up his stats and they are fugly. 7.32 ERA, and 10 + in day games. Anyone know what happened to him this year? Is it that he should still be in the minors but because the Royals are essentially a minor league team his is in the majors?
  18. When Cey and Bowa were there they practically kept that grass knee-high. By that time those 2 were pretty much finished, and had no range whatsoever. The Cubs were such a better, smarter organization under Dallas Green.
  19. Would there be enough meal money to go around?
  20. You got it backwards; Ankiel suffered from Steve Blass Disease. The way you put it is basically the same thing as saying Tommy John underwent Kerry Wood Surgery. :D The way Kerry is going he's gonna get a few injuries and ailments named after himself.
  21. Last night I watched the '71 World Series on TV. They show it here a lot in San Juan because it was Clemente's last WS. Some things that struck me: 1. Curt Gowdy was a great announcer. I really miss listening to him during the '70s. 2. Willie Stargell was relatively skinny at that stage of his career, but enormously strong. 3. Gene Clines playing center for the Pirates? I never realized he'd played center. 4. Clemente hit something like .414 in that series. 5. Steve Blass had a violent squirrely windup and whicked movement on his pitches. Maybe that led to his later case of the yips, aka Rick Ankiel disease. 6. That Pirates team was darn good. They just looked like such an impressive unit they way they played the game. 7. Daytime WS games? I miss those. 8. Just about all the men in the boxseats it seemed wore coat and tie. All in all it made me realize how much more I liked baseball in those days than today.
  22. At least we've a good bench tonight. Barret, Walker, Jones, Nevin. There are some nice bats off the bench right there.
  23. Hey, don't shoot the messenger -- I'm just repeating what was printed in a family newspaper :) I don't think Fred was referring to you... yeah, I know, but I thought a preemptive claim of innocence couldn't hurt :D
  24. Hey, don't shoot the messenger -- I'm just repeating what was printed in a family newspaper :)
  25. From Mariotti's column: "One incident involved Guillen himself on a night in Baltimore when he stood naked behind me in the clubhouse and -- how do I put this? -- pretended to have sex with me." With the Mariotti-Guillen feud and last week's bit of nastiness about the Cards whining about the Sox stealing their signs and the beanball incidents with Duncan's son -- This is like watching your white trash "relations" "wrassle in the mud" at a family reunion. At least it's comic relief in a nightmarish season.
