  1. Gotta give him a shot and see if he can keep it up, IMHO.
  2. I guess it depends on what you mean by poorly. 2012 will be a grace period where almost any result would be accepted by Ricketts. But if they aren't winning 85 games by 2014, I'm guessing the new guy will start to have pressure. If they go out and win 81 games every year, that would be a poor job, but he'd probably keep it for a long time. The GM's going to be judged more on the decisions they make in the short to medium term versus wins and losses. The manager will get the heat unless the new GM makes a bunch of dumb moves. Obviously if the team is sub-.500 for several years the GM would get canned but that doesn't seem likely with the amount of $$$ the Cubs have to play with.
  3. Not surprising... this is one of the top few jobs available in baseball with as much $$$ as the Cubs bring in.
  4. Now that he's free from Hendry's mismanagement Barney has developed his natural homerun power.
  5. Z for new GM/Manager
  6. Considering Fielder + CJ Wilson seem to be only worth 8 wins combined over Pena/replacement player from the stats I'm looking at, I don't think that's enough to make the playoffs unless we get a bunch of dumb luck. Probably looking at a .500 team next year.
  7. http://www.obstructedview.net/chicago-cubs/articles/2012-cubs-payroll-outlook.html We are already likely committed to between $100-$109 million in payroll for next year. Z/Dempster/Soriano/backloaded Pena money = $55 million alone. If payroll is only $120 million it's going to be hard to have more than one of those 3 If it's going to be $134 again we might be able to sign 2. I agree that if we kept Aram and signed Fielder/Wilson that would probably put us back into contention (assuming Dempster/Z bounce back somewhat and the defense improves), but that seems like an extension of the Hendry era instead of a plan over a few years to get into position to win a World Series. It's very critical not to blow this opportunity over the next couple years.
  8. Garza's been solid but nowhere near a top pitcher (he is just under the league average ERA of 3.84 at 3.80). Dempster and Zambrano have both well been below league average. Dempster is certainly on the downside of his career (maybe he gives us what Garza did this year in '12 if we're lucky) and Z has so many miles on his arm at this point that I don't think you can count on him to bounce back and be what he used to be. Wells has been flat-out awful. Cashner had 1 great start before he got hurt but he's still unproven and how he will come back from a major injury is unknown. Lopez has been okay for us getting him off the scrap heap but I doubt anyone wants to count on him for a full season. That's why I'm really in favor of blowing this team up. If we can't fix the starting pitching and get it into the top third of the NL in 2012 we're not going to go anywhere even if we do overpay for Fielder.
  9. To be fair, it wouldn't be good for Hendry's negotiating position to come out publicly and say that we're going to have a firesale and want to get rid of everyone. He might be able to get some better prospects if he sells that he really wants to keep the team intact.
  10. seems like the first Soriano HR this year with men on base
  11. That was really nice, but he should have never even tried the throw to 1st. He's lucky Pena got it.
  12. Pretty doubtful, the Cubs were playing that like a playoff series. Plus it was the Cubs' first ever win over the Yankees. Didn't Dusty make it so Prior/Wood/Z would all start in the series?
  13. Pretty misleading, he just says we're stuck with Soriano and probably with Aram.
  14. I noticed a pretty big drop in traffic when this site was down for a couple months a year or so ago. The Cubs not being any good obviously doesn't help.
  15. Seems like it would make more sense to play Pujols at 3B (at least for a few years) than 1B.
  16. Someone needs to bust Pujols for HGH already.
  17. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/05/espn-personality-jay-mariotti-charged-with-felony-stalking-and-assault-after-allegedly-confronting-ex-girlfriend.html
  18. We're not going anywhere until Dempster starts pitching well again.
  19. B-B-B-ut he should hit 7th in the optimized lineup!
  20. I think the failure of this analysis is it's just measuring wins and losses. I'd like to see run differential used instead.
  21. Dusty ruins another promising young pitcher.
  22. http://www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/cincinnatireds/entries/2011/02/23/reds_on_alert_over_loss_of_wai.html?cxtype=feedbot Gomes and Dusty trolling the Cards is mildly amusing.
  23. Yeah, these articles always make me suspious of PED usage.
  24. Surely there's got to be a former player who's entertaining that they can get to do it. I'd "audition" people throughout the first couple months of the season and give whoever does the best job the gig FT.
