  1. not surprising at all.
  2. The Duk-Soo High School product is said to have a 148km fastball(roughly 92 mph). I prefer it in KM. 148km just sounds nastier
  3. team success often seems to hinge on having at least 1 or 2 pitchers having career years and then never achieving that level again any time soon. Volume should increase those odds. I like it. I have always liked Sheets.
  4. Love having maddux in the fold. Pretty much every one of our young pitchers who was around when he was last here said (repeatedly) how helpful he was. He has coaching written all over him imo.
  5. Wrigley and it's charm are a pretty big part of the cubs identity/A big part of why the can draw 3 million a year with some pretty uninspiring baseball. I think some cubs fans kinda resent Wrigley as it is the primary reason why some people go to the games, not the cubs, not to watch good baseball (or hope to at least) You remove Wrigley or make it unrecognizable and I think you'd be surprised at the negative response, even by people who didn't know they cared. I have been to tons of ball parks all over the country, and only Wrigley, Fenway and the old Yankee stadium had that same "it". Anaheim comes close for me. The old Comiskey was great. I didn't like the Dodgers a bit, nor the new Baltimore park, which started the whole looks classic/but with amenities. Note that I am an old grumpy man
  6. I dunno, Lee's ineptitude w/ guys on base last year was so obvious I would not be shocked to see him moved out of the top 4. He could hardly whine about it.
  7. He wants more lefties in the lineup and with Soto, Soriano, Lee, Aramis and Theriot entrenched at their positions, 2b is one of the few spots where he can do that. I'm not saying I agree with it, but that is his rationale. I could be hallucinating, but I seem to remember Hendry saying this exact thing, before Derosa was traded (or was it someone attributing it to Hendry?). So I was not in the least bit surprised when he was traded. It was guaranteed.
  8. alrighty... I'll just align myself to the "Hendry has a plan" crowd and assume that this is a work in progress. I also believe that Lou has some say, and I also believe that Lou has a clue. - Derosa was a goner, I like the trade - Miles? Dunno. I have no idea at this point if he is going to start - There are financial moves being made. At this point I believe they are being made to add flexibility rather than to simply save money This is all very interesting, but at this point I am going to hold off on detailed analysis until all the chips have fallen. If you live in a 2 dimensional world everything is a surprise...
  9. That they decided to arbitrarily trade him doesn't make the trade good. It made the team worse overall, so it was bad. A) we cannot yet value those pitching prospects. Afterall, the cubs have shown a pretty good track record with identifying/developing pitchers. B) not if this is the Part A of a multiple step transaction. Wait till all the dominoes have fallen I would say, or till the first pitch is thrown.
  10. Mostly I agree with the criticism. I guess my point is that MD was a goner. Both Hendry and Lou want some left handed starters. I do think we are selling high. Yes it may have financial aspects that we have yet to see the outcome of (peavy/Bradley, etc.). In my mind I was already counting him out... and was pleased that we got some talent for him that may prove useful either in the future or as future pieces in a trade. Maybe I am just giving him the benefit of the doubt (again) but I still like this deal.
  11. Is it really that bad a deal when you consider that MD was going to be moved, no matter what? That 2nd base was one of the only opportunities to slot in a lefty starter? That in the cubbies midset a middling lefty (any lefty) is > than the possibility of a productive MD? And based on our playoff performance, you can kinda see their logic? I like the deal, but I don't claim to be able to see into the future....
  12. can't say I am even a teeeny tiny bit surprised. Makes perfect sense across the board.
  13. ah, forgot about that thing they call a ball park. To think, Wrigley is more pitcher friendly.
  14. They just said the phillies are in fact interested (on philly sports talk radio), not as a 3rd team. makes perfect sense. they are a contender but need starting pitching far more than we do One issue, the phillies minor leagues are pretty barren due to a series of recent trades that pretty much gutted them. They do have some tradeable assets on the big league team, though (Victorino frinstance...)
  15. he was durn good in the 2nd half...45 years and all
  16. There have been a # of instances of pitching rich/offensively poor teams doing well recently. Our offense was pretty durn good last year (minus those becalmed stretches, such as the playoffs). If we can somehow end up with a dominant 1-3 and a serviceable 4... yummy Having Roberts (or someone else Roberts LIKE) would be nice to help us generate runs the old fashioned way - steals, bunts, etc....
  17. Agreed, corner OF. I want a big hittin big RBI machine out there. Want and get obviously not the same darn thing
  18. Even if I didn't like baseball I would like listening to Ron Santo and Pat Hughes. Yes, Ron can get sidetracked, and forgetful... but he loves the game and every once in a while comes up with some pretty keen observations, but sometimes you gotta wait a bit.
  19. would like to but probably couldn't bring myself to do it. He certainly has done everything we could possibly ask of him.
  20. I understand everyone's anxiety around woody, but Heck, he's been just fine so far. If he gets injured, we'll hear lots of "I told you so." Fine. At this point he has been a very respectable example of a closer.
  21. did anyone do a pick by pick analysis that I can review? I was off the grid for a week and would like to get a good overview
