  1. The "I've been here all along! I deserve MORE" that some fans have against band wagon jumpers is pathetic. It should be a hug fest, YEAH! Our team is winning! You can congratulate yourself for being a "truer" fan, but don't bash those that get some joy from an unexpected source. This Me. Vs. Them mentality is childish. We'r better... Sports is about competition. The winner gets to crow, rant, brag, stick their tongues out and go "phlpppttttt" to their heart's content. IT'S THEIR RIGHT to react however they darn will please cuz they won and you didn't The other side of this is that when the Cubbies finally win one (hopefully in my lifetime) I reserve the right to be as annoying as I want. To feel as proud as anyone else, and anyone who wants to jump on the bandwagon is welcome. It doesn't diminish in any way the joy I will feel. GO SOX, spoken as a lifelong cubs fan.
  2. I hate all other teams other than the cubs. - I hate the teams that beat the cubs more - I hate the teams that represent chicago less In sports, someone wins, someone loses. That's the way it works. The Sox will have earned their "nyah nyah's". THEY WON THE WORLD SERIES (if they do....). I am mature enough to take that abuse and recognize it for what it is, a wonderful historical rivalry between 2 snake bit teams who cannot step out of one anothers shadows as they represent the same city. BRING IT ON, I can take it. I hope sometime in the future to bring it right back at ya. And the reverse is true. Think about it from their perspective, the Sox have ALWAYS been the ugly step child in Chicago, the cubs the prodigal feel-good son. "Hey, we've got Wrigley and you have....?" Man, they probably hate our guts! Good! Let's go SOX, beat up on the 'stros! HUMILIATE them.
  3. Hateful and angry. The World Series is about to be forever tainted, and our fellow Cub fans are facing relentless persecution in their own city. What other reaction could one feel in the face of this travesty? Yup, we've been facing persecution for, ooooh, 90 years now? AND WE ARE THE LOVEABLE LOSERS remember..... How does this change that? Do the sox winning change how you feel about the cubs? Increases your self loathing perhaps? Doesn't change it for me. I will never change my allegiances from the cubs no matter what, not even by a %. What anyone else says, whomever else wins, whatever knuckleheaded people or moves the organizations undertakes, I'm a cubs fan. This "you aren't a cubs fan if you do not hate the sox" is lame. Is your love of the team that tenuous? What about all the other teams that have been kicking our tushes for all of my life?
  4. I grew up in chicago in the 60'-70's. I went to Sox and Cubs games, probably 95% cubs games though. I am first and foremost a cubs fan by a long stretch, but I LOVED some of those sox teams and loved alot of their players (fisk, gamble, luzinski, some great pitching, etc...). I said before I hate the sox like I hate a brother, but I will stick up against anyone else who calls either one of us out. There is NO COMPARISON about how I feel about the 'stros, fish, dodgers, cards, etc. as compared to the Sox. I hate those teams because we PLAY against those teams, they are the competition. The Sox are not. I find it hard to hate 1/2 of the city I love, although, like others, I do not find it hard to hate an entire state (texas... shiver....). You should hate the team, not the fans FIRST. To suggest that I am not a real chicago baseball fan because I don't hate the sox is kinda a weird position to take...
  5. I think my point is a good one Sure they need to just plain get better and win, but... Remember the Cards of the 70's and 80's? They were dominant defensively and could run you out of their park with decent pitching to back it up. If you were a long ball team your odds of winning there were not good. If you can optimize your team to play well within the environ where you play 1/2 of your games gauranteed, you are going to help yourself be competitive. SO yeah, 80% of it is JUST GETTING BETTER, but its the remaining 20% where the juice is, where you can optimize your chances. To me, part of that is architecting a team that is well suited to your playing conditions.
  6. to state the obvious.... You play 1/2 of your games at home (see? Obvious). You need to tune your team to win on your home turf. Anything you win away from home is gravy, and we know in baseball that ANY team has a 40% chance of winning almost any day. Despite Wrigley's rep as a HR park, it is becoming less so (statistically). And there are days you couldn't drive it out with bazooka due to the winds. So a team has to be able to create runs as needed. This cubs team probably was last in the league in scoring when there was a guy on first. No steals. No hit and run. No situational hitting. Bleeech. I would like to see the cubbies solidify themselves defensively as much as possible, come up with a settled starting 9 (so they can learn to play together and learn to play in the conditions) and CUT DOWN ON THE DARN WALKS (by the other team, not by us). I'd also like a better manager (please god...)
  7. Add me to the list. One more I grew up watching both teams, but was a cubbies fan through and through. How could you not like the 70's era sox? Fisk? Shorts? Fro's? Veeck? Come on! Sure this ver. is kinda odd, but I'm still rooting for the white hose. I determined yesterday I was rooting for the Cards as I hated the 'stros more. Wow, took me all of one day to sink that ship...
  8. are there 3 teams we would like to see LESS? So it is kinda in reverse order from Worst to Least Worst Sox - Sure I am a cubbies guy, but I have some love for many of the sox teams over the years, and Bill Veeck. So they are my least worst Cards - I grew up HATING the cards of the 60's/70's and 80's. They just beat us and beat us good. God I hated playing in that concrete tomb. At least they are a midwestern team and TRULY love their cards. That being said, I hate them LESS than... Houston - I hate texas. I hate their fans. I resent all the CR*P that has come out of texas in the last couple of decades (texas school board/The Bushes/Enron/Delay, etc. etc.) like the rest of the country doesn't matter. There are some guys I like on the team, but that isn't enough to save them in my eyes. So, yeah. These are the 3 teams I would like to see least in this position, but I gotta root for the home town team. Maybe if they win it will light a fire under the cubs leadership (maybe?)
  9. you gotta root for the sox! They are chicago! The cards are EVIL. Their fans are cool? They are obnoxious! REALLY obnoxious! How could anyone root for the cards over the sox? Think of the sox as your brother, you don't like him much, but if anyone bad mouths him watch out. The cards are like the rich kid down the street who won't play with you because you mom dresses you funny. ANd yes, if the Sox won I would appreciate having the cubs brass be forced to watch that parade.
  10. Atlanta had as many injuries as we did, but didn't make excuses and wasn't afraid to rely on rooks. Houston has NO OFFENSE whatsoever and still made it to the post season. You have to take the strengths of a team and RIDE IT. Baker never gave this team an identity, other than "it's not our fault" Of course it is not all Bakers fault, but that doesn't mean he is immune from blame in general. he was attrocious this year, and smug about it too boot. Please god, don't give Baker an extension! Show some mercy!
  11. Mickey Mantle is rolling around in his grave.... But he's glad he's dead at this point. Sounds like another excuse and kinda puritanical to me. Baseball players have been dogs since dinosaurs roamed the earth (or thereabouts..). Many of the were still able to hit, throw and run....
  12. Dusty is SUCH a doofus. good point above. Other teams come in here and beat up on us, and we play there 81 games a year! Again, this team is just WRONG, and Dusty is a major part of it. ENOUGH EXCUSES! God I hate all the excuses! The fact that they are so stupid and lame just makes it more aggrevating! Bring in Leyland. At this point I could use his laid back reserve.
  13. yanks don't make playoffs (looking less likely every day). Piniella to Yanks. Torre to cubs. Works for me.
  14. Agreed! That has been my major criticism of this team and of Dusty! This team doesn't do anything well. It has no identity. They have no FIRE. They are not aggressive in any aspect of their game. Because of that they are not that interesting a team to watch or follow. No hustle. No fundy baseball. No fire (big z excluded). No confidence. About the only thing they get fired up about is blaming (fans, press, etc.). Nobody is AFRAID to play this team.
  15. Like Atlanta, right? With, what, 7 rookies? Maybe it comes down to COACHING....
  16. Maddux doesn't whine. Maddux is comfortable with his teammates Maddux works with the other pitchers he's a pretty good hitter A gold glove fielder Maddux can still eat up the innings He's been remarkably healthy Sure he isn't the pitcher he was, and $9 million is not cheap, but I think we got exactly what we were expecting out of him and I will be happy if he feels like he can still be productive and joins us again next year.
  17. I remember in an interview with Dontrell he praised the cubs minor leagues for focusing on the fundementals, he was referring to his ability to bunt as I remember.
  18. Hendry said sometime earlier in the year "and we'll have a payroll of around $100 million next year also if we continue to fill the seats/make money" or somesuch. In other words, if the finances are positive, which with the cubs huge following, good T.V. deal and filled seats, should not be a problem Exactly how much will we have under contract next year? How much will we have to spend to get up to $100? Furcal - yummy Giles - also yummy, but I have my doubts he'll go here Manny - oh would I LOVE to see him hitting in Wrigley. He's one wacky dude. Betcha he ends up in Mets-land, though Starting pitching - my bet is that the cubs figure they have enough potential here. Which they do
  19. I understand what you're saying Rocket but this team is as thin skinned as Baker. He has set the bar and they are following it. Bing. Zing. Bang. Whoooo weeee Winna
  20. Burnitz has actually had a pretty decent year, meaning....
  21. this team played with no fire. The fundementals were aweful. Players knew their positions were safe because Dusty always sticks to his "dudes." Dusty always blamed everyone else. THe team for the last 3 years has behaved the same way (steve stone anyone?). A good manager, injuries and all, could have lit a FIRE under this team and at least got them to be competitive for part of the year. If we were leading the wild card race at the all-star game, don't you think this team would have been more likely to lay it all on the line in the 2nd half? When a team is in it, and feeling cocky and dangerous, they play better ball. Winning begats winning. This team had the attitude all year that they didn't need to try harder to win, that winning wasn't the most important thing to them. A good manager can instill that feeling of aggression and confidence that good teams possess. They expect to win every game and know that their manager will do whatever it takes to try to make it happen. Not dusty. Here's my hope, and it is unfortunately getting less likely with every yankee win, that Torre gets the boot, the cubs brass cuts bait with Dusty, and brings Torre in to manage till he retires. 10 games? EASY
  22. love the hitting totals, can he field? I know his rep when drafted was 5 tools. whats' the consensus now that you have had a chance to watch him everyday?
  23. exactly how is it the fans fault? Do other teams fans do something different that allow their prospects to flourish? Is it their accents? Something in the water? Do they not go to the games thus minimizing the likelihood of bringing career ending embarassment? Are we that much worse than Philly fans (note, where I currently reside)? The are ahead in the wild card and consistently CRUCIFY (on the air, in print, in person) their players, players that are on a winning team I might add. If anything, I think we expect TOO LITTLE from our players. you've gone through 3 or more levels of the minors, are getting paid $$$$ to play sports and have been groomed for this moment probably since you were 5 years old. PRODUCE. SHeesh
