  1. As much as I hate seeing Theriot and Johnson starting everyday, I find it incredible that most people are focusing on improving the offense. If we acquired a #1a starter, allowing everyone else to slide down a spot AND push Marquis out of the rotation, it would improve this team a great deal more than adding a decent bat, imo. I mean, I understand that acquiring a 1a is very difficult, but shouldn't we put our few valuable chips toward trying to meet that end before we explore other options?
  2. Can we just get a 1a starter and call it a WS, please?
  3. Fontenot not intimidated by the electric arm of David Riske.
  4. Kinda nice seeing 4 runs on 3 hits after so many years of 2 runs on 9 hits or the like. Amazing what plate discipline can do.
  5. and, of course, when not to blow your wad.
  6. The most inane idea ever. Which category does today's loss reside in? The 54 losses or the "other" 54? It really seems like an idea Dusty would come up with. I have no idea why reasonably intelligent people subscribe to this.
  7. I think we're all in agreement this team needs a 1-b type pitcher. Someone good enough to start the 1st or 2nd game of a postseason series. . Joe Blanton just isn't that guy for me. His career #s away form Oakland are scary, including but not limited to a .292 BAA and a 4.70 ERA. If Lincecum WERE available (and he should be, really) the Cubs might have an angle to shoot. We're in the unusual position of having quite a few expendable assets that would be instant (& young/ cheap) upgrades in S.F. Assume they are okay with their OF of Winn, Rowand and Lewis. They have no need of a 3B with Villalona coming. SS is a gaping black hole. Babcock and Burriss should not be ML starters. No one in the system in sight. They would probably start Simokaitis if we dealt him, lol, so Theriot would be a massive upgrade even after he cools off. At 2B they have Ray Durham (who is OPSing <.700 again), with Nick Noonan still a few years away. EPatt would fit perfectly here. Starting occasionally until Durham proves that he is done. Rich Aurilia is the worst hitter in the major leagues. How do you SLG .179? His backup is Dan Ortmeier. In AAA there is Die Hard. Here we can't help them as much, but Hoffpauir is certainly better than any option they have at the moment. Molina is producing, and we really don't have anything to offer at C, anyhow. The closer is Brian Wilson, who is not good. Marmol is top-flight closer material. That would be an enormous upgrade. To "replace" Lincecum we could offer Gallagher, Marshall or perhaps Ceda. Hmm so we've got EPatt, Theriot, Hoffpauir, Marmol, Gallagher and Marshall/Ceda. Looking at it, this would really all hinge on what Sabean thought of Gallagher. Is he capable of being the centerpiece of a package like this? The fairly big 2nd chip in Marmol and the quantity of upgrades help, I think. Perhaps we could take back a contract like Dave Roberts? In the end, what I think we'd have to do is grab a good SP prospect in a deal for Murton and swing him to S.F. in an augmented version of this deal.
  8. According to Felix, he is going to start.
  9. Castillo, Church and Schneider have combined for 5 extra base hits in 173 AB. Interestingly, David Wright has ~1/3 of New York's extra-base hits. He is good.
  10. Just...wow. So utterly impressed with Kosuke.
  11. I guess it's better than Sean Marshall honeymoon video.
  12. That would be a very poor decision IMO. 9th in AL in WHIP. < 30. Pitches in AL East.
  13. If we added Marmol and Colvin perhaps we could get Guthrie?
  14. Brian Roberts: 2001: .625 OPS in 273 AB 2002: .605 OPS in 128 AB 2003: .704 OPS in 460 AB 2004: .720 OPS in 641 AB After this many ABs at this level of production, do you think Roberts felt some pressure to put up #s? 2005: .902 OPS in 561 AB 1 time? I don't buy it.
  15. This is the feeling I've had all along. If they didn't feel this way, I believe they would've gotten a veteran SS to backup Ryan by now. Perhaps Ronny hasn't dealt well with pressure at the ML level and they want to let him get comfortable before benching Theriot.
  16. 359/.422/.557 That was Ronnys line in AAA last year at age 24. He has continued to show pbetter plate discipline in Venezuela. Theriot has NEVER put up numbers that come anywhere close. Why wouldn't you start the guy with at least the potential to be league average or above?
  17. Did you say "Harrelsonian"?
  18. I fondly remember one day in May 1998 when Operation Shutdown came into Wrigley leading the league in hitting, only to be made a fool of over and over by some Texan kid.
  19. From Rotoworld: If this is indeed the package, we could have topped it pretty easily. Fill enough of a smaller market team's holes cheaply and with a little upside and you can make these video game trades. Hill/Pie/EPatt/Marmol crushes this package.
  20. I'd rather trade Marshall and Veal for Josh Hamilton and save Murt and Prior to include in a deal for a SS or SP upgrade.
  21. WTH? This should be done already if that's the case.
  22. There's something a little weird about Roberts' progression. As a 23 yr. old in '01 he put up an OPS of .625. He followed that up with seasons of .605, .704 and .720. Then at 27 yrs. old his OPS jumped to .902 due mostly to a spike in SLG to .515 (up from .376). That's an awfully big jump after ~1500 ABs. Makes me a little wary. Markakis, however..........I would give a king's ransom for that guy if he were truly available.
  23. Actually, the Orioles match up with us very well. They want to get younger and they need a closer, a CF, a corner OF and middle of the rotation help. If Tejada leaves they'll want a young SS. We have trading chips in all of these areas. Marmol Pie EPatt Murton Marshall Cedeno
