  1. What frightens me about this offseason is that Hendry has a lot of holes to fill, and a lot of money to do it with. He's shows a habit of lowballing potential FA"s while overpaying the back end of his roster. That doesn't make me feel good about us getting the best players in the positions we need them in. I'm afraid of Preston Wilson or Burnitz in RF instead of Giles, and I'm very fearful of bringing Rusch back. I'd feel better about this offseason had last offseason gone well, but it was a mess. We have the same holes to fill plus a couple new holes. I just don't have total faith in Hendry to prioritize Giles over Bobby Howry, or let Neifi and Macias go in favor of better, cheaper options for the bench.
  2. Yeah, I haven't seen a single post rip Wood for being soft, or rip COrey for sucking... ...oh wait. That's 25% of Tim's bandwidth.
  3. Yeah, Aramis was overpaid. Before he faceplanted himself hustling down the line (which is what "everybody" complained about, him not hustling) he was leading the team in RBI's and HR, and was hitting over .300. After starting the season in a brutal slump. But yeah, he was overpaid. An injury that costs you the last month of the season doesn't make you overpaid, especially when you miss said month and still end up 2nd in most offensive categories...
  4. Trot Nixon. Why would Trot Nixon be anywhere close to available? Since the prevailing thought here is for Giles but the odds are against the current regime of signing him, then who else? No offense but Prior for Cabrera would never happen. Why would the Marlins trade away Cabrera for anyone at this point? I could understand if he was making some money but his salary isn't even in the 1 million dollar range yet! I seriously doubt that he is a concern for the Marlins. So in the real world, who is an option if Giles is not available? I was kidding about Nixon.
  5. I'd totally pay for a brick.
  6. I wouldn't. The guys with the 2.50 era is likely to pitch deeper into games, and keep you in more games than the other guy. Consequently, that saves your pen, and gives you a chance to win more games.
  7. Yes. So I hope that doesn't mean we make some idiotic trade like ARam for Bill Mueller.
  8. Uh, no. You're more like Enrique Wilson. Not here in any kind of serious capacity. Oo, Ooh, which player am I?? Rich Hill. Just as Dusty's approach with Hill, after a couple of outings, we've seen enough to know everything there is about you, yet you just keep hanging around. Wow. Ouch, though.

  10. He made it when he had no more Holla/Lawton options. I can't wait for Baker to leave and it can't be soon enough. Exactly, the alternative was Hairston everyday, and those two platooned for a little bit before Murton's performance/Dusty's distaste for Hairston won out. I forgot about Hairston! Just call me Dusty. I will be thrilled if the Cubs sign 3 OF's better than Murton but I know that if Hendry picks up 3 vets and no matter what their skill level is that they will get the first shot to play. I will be totally bewildered if Murton doesn't get first crack at LF next year. There's not much more he could have done in his 150 AB's. He showed power, average, patience, speed...
  11. Have the Cubs discussed moving Angel Guzman to the bullpen, since he can't seem to stay healthy as a starter?
  12. Patterson's value couldn't be lower unless he had one of his legs fall off. I don't see him as an attractive trading chip. And for $12m per, I'd rather sign Kevin Millwood via FA and hang onto whatever prospects we'd have to give up. I agree that Patterson alone (or as the front person in a trade) is not much of a trading chip, but I would bet that Hendry is going to hear Patterson's name quite often as the throw-in in trade talk. I think there are a lot of teams out there that think they could "heal" Patterson or are willing to take a shot at him as the throw-in in some deal. He could be one of those players that needs a change of address. I can see that. What I'd bet happens is that Hendry sells Patterson for cents on the dollar at the winter meetings for a bullpen arm.
  13. I want to thank DJAXX for all the great chats, and thank Tim for creating and running a site that has become respected enough to attract posters like Len, Bruce Miles, and others that might lurk. It's so cool to be a part of something this cool at the beginning. Great work to all the mods, admins and board founders!
  14. I will take the Santo Appreciation package, becuase my grandmother will enjoy the gift (Santo is her favorite Cub of all time, and she doesn't have TOC). Thanks to everyone who donated! :D
  15. Why would Millwood come cheaper? He is 30 years old and coming off an ERA title. His agent is Bore-ass. Millwood is going to command at 10 million a year, likely for 4 years. Well, $10m is cheaper than $12m, and we wouldn't have to give up prospects for him. Plus, Milwood is light years better than Vasquez.
  16. What a fantastic B-Day gift that would make for me, to have Dusty headed out of town.... You didn't get that girl in the big cake I sent you?! Hmm, wonder who did? HA!
  17. No chance that happens. One side will point out the fact that Prior gets hurt too much, and the other will busily try and point out that Miggy has character issues. And I would never trade Prior for Miggy. You can find a Miggy. It's harder to find #1 starters. This argument is as old as baseball, but I take the other side. A pitcher at his best can only help you win 20% of the team's games. A position player can help you win 100% of your team's games. Further, in this case, I'm not so sure Prior is a #1 pitcher anymore. And even if he recovers to his 2003 form, Cabrera is already, at age 23, one of the five best hitters in the game. I'd do Prior for Cabrera in a heartbeat, but I don't think the Fish would, and I KNOW Jim Hendry doesn't have the cajones for it. But it would improve the team. I think it's robbing Peter to pay Paul. You weaken your pitching, but improve your offense, so IMO it's a wash. And besides, per Roast we're only supposed to decide between dealing for Abreu and signing Giles in this thread :P . So we'll have to take this one elsewhere.

  19. Waaaah? Oh Dusty, go home to SoCal...please. PLEASE!!

  21. Wow, BK, that's unexpected...and very gracious.
  22. I think location is overrated when it comes to most ML players. They follow the contract and the chance to win, usually in that order. We have a chance to win, and we can give up a contract that matches any other team's offer, if necessary. Loyalty goes only as far as the best offer. Just ask Beltran, ARod, Manny, Thome, Pudge, Sexson, Beltre...need I go on?
