  1. Dopirak, Pie, Williams and Hill for Dunn and Freel.
  2. No... Just no. Jones/Sosa platoon? :P Why dont we just leave right field empty and get Derrek Lee some moon boots so he can catch anything going that direction? I think an empty RF has a shot at a higher VORP than Jones might end up at.
  3. Where is Pie going to start 2006? AAA? Most likely. Though a really bad showing in ST could land him back at West Tenn. I wonder why they would put their best hitting coach in the least useful spot in the system. AAA would seem to me to be a waste of his talents.
  4. Where is Pie going to start 2006? AAA?
  5. Welcome to the forum!
  6. You may want to review Oakland's 2005 draft if you actually believe this. You might just open your mind about how close-minded their approach is. I don't think that Oakland's drafting 7 high schoolers of their first 20 picks in '05 had anything to do with being "open-minded." I think they finally looked at the mirror and saw how foolish taking 0 of 20 and 3 of 20 the prior two years was. That philosophy was really the silliest sports related philosophy I've ever heard. It speaks to arrogance that they ever did it in the first place. I think it was more about the fact that they needed to make sure the money they spent on draft picks translated to MLB success, or at least contribution, and saw college players at the time as being a better investment. 5 years later, or whatever, that may have changed, to the point that HS players might be more undervalued than before, and thusly a better investment. it's way more fun to just trash the a's for being different though. well, duh. if billy beane hadn't wanted attention or criticism, he shouldn't have written that book. :P
  7. Thanks for taking time to answer our questions. How do you go about preserving some of the older pieces in the HOF, and preventing deterioration?

  9. By the way, I've heard that Ponson is Dutch for fat. "Panzon" is Spanish for fat...
  10. That's a really good point. It's very important for both to not struggle out of the gate. If they have a really solid first 6 weeks, Baker will probably feel more comfortable when they do hit that 1-16 slump.
  11. Who is Murton going to sit for? Hairston? Mabry? Hairston 2005 against righties: .263/.351/.366/.718 Mabry 2005 against righties: .242/.301/.428/.729 Murton against righties: 261/.329/.478/.807 Murton will need days off throughout the season and those selected days off should only be against "extreme righties". Looking at who would be replacing him in the lineup, I can't see the Cubs benefitting from having Murton on the bench in those games. With such a weak OF bench, Murton will need to be in the lineup 140 games throughout the season. I dunno. I thought that those comments by Baker about Murton were somewhat encouraging.
  12. I figured it might be too early, and it was only a couple posts. I'll not hijack it further.
  13. If only this were November 11th.
  14. US is looking impressive tonight without the internationals. Missed last weeks game, but happy with the style of play. Dempsey has been very impressive. The Norway game looked like they were playing a high school team. It was a joke. The problem with the US roster is that I worry that Arena won't go with players like Dempsey and Twellman. I think that if he can find another left back, he'll use Lewis out wide, with O'Brien on the right, and McBride would probably have to break a leg before Arena would sit him. I really like what Dempsey brings when he's on, and I think the US would do better to have Twellman than McBride at this stage of both players' careers. Twellmen doesn't cost you anything as far as 50/50 ball, and I think he's a more creative offensive player.
  15. Murton is probably the best #2 hitter on the roster.
  16. Does he know what he did wrong the two years before last? Because he's been bad for more than just last season. Optimism is good, but I think those expectations are just ripe for letting you down. I'd be shocked if he hit better than .275.
  17. The World Baseball Classis is going to disappoint. Touche. And well played, sir.
  18. There's only one international sporting event I'm interested in this year :D

I know the Bulls need a guard like the Cubs need another middle IF, but I'd like Redick on this team. He and Gordon would make a sick, sick shooting backcourt. I'd trade Duhon, Noc and one of the 1st round picks to Atlanta for Al Harrington, too, so I am pretty stupid, so who knows.
  20. I would offer them Williams, Pie, Dopirak and Gallagher. And they might bite on that, IMO.
  21. I think that Pierre makes them at least average, but I'm not sure if it makes them a lock to be above average. No matter what, this season comes down to pitching. If they have good starting pitching, they can get away with having a league average offense. If they have injuries and erratic performance from Wood and Prior, respectively, and Maddux continues to stagnate, we will finish .500 unless EVERYONE on the offense has a career year. My personal preference would have been to make sure your offense is a lock to be top 5 in the NL, and that way you can offset the inevtiable injuries/ineffectiveness of at least one of your starters. But that's not how it worked out, so we'll see what happens. You really can't prepare for injuries to a rotation besides acquiring a swingman, which is suited for someone like Rusch. What you can do is be careful with your starting pitchers and not overwork them leading to fatigue and eventually injuries. That's even before considering the possibility of a fluke injury like Prior or Lieber spraining his ankle crossing home. You don't think that having a better offense would mean the Cubs could sustain an injury more easily that the current team would?
  22. The bolded part seems to make it pretty clear that he does know about the draft pick exchange. Big win for the Bulls tonight. Now they need to win one more out of these last two, at least. Drats. That was awful on my part. Also, the sentence right preceding your paragraph:
  23. So could any year. I'm sure there were a bunch of people that thought '03 could be a long year. I'll bet you more people thought 2003 would be a year that Choi, Hill and Zambrano would develop into cornerstones, and we'd be building toward competitiveness in 2004-6.
  24. I'm pretty sure it was around the same time that it was discovered that Todd Walker can't turn DP's, and that Grudz was a striped bass. Grudz wasn't the stripped bass; he was Dusty's girlfriend. Mark Prior plays the trombone, however. In Rubby's band?
