  1. are you kidding me? he's had one great season, and he's 30, right? He's not worth that much until he proves his 2005 wasn't just an extreme fluke. Giving him more money than Aramis for a lesser body of work isn't fiscally sound, as Lee isn't likely to repeat 2005's success, and will probably result in ARam opting out looking for $15m+ after this season.
  2. I'm sorry, I'm not following. Do you mean Carroll is suggesting that the E.R. trip was for his shoulder? It was weird. Carroll and B & B somehow implied that the illness that put Prior "behind" has created a situation where his shoulder is weaker than it should be. It didn't make sense to me, either.
  3. FWIW, Carroll was on WSCR where he was talking about his presence and comments at Wood's press conference the other day. Supposedly the illness and the shoulder are related.
  4. I would not give him an extension just yet. He certainly doesn't deserve more money that Ramirez, who's had much more sustained success and is younger. I'd wait until mid season to see how it's going. I'd even wait and go the Konerko route into the winter if necessary.
  5. Grrrreeeeat.
  6. I think it's more ridiculous that a 2 week illness in December would have him missing time in April. What kinds of throwing drills would he have been doing 2 months before ST, and how signifigant could they possibly be? I'm starting to think that the Cubs have no idea how to handle professional athletes. It's either overly cautious or waaay too reckless.
  7. Well yeah, but Woody's rate of return on complete seasons has been running at 0% for years now. Sure everyone's one play away, but Woody's been rolling snake eyes so often, I can't see how he will suddenly become a rock in the rotation. 2 years. ....and counting. And before that he had two years in a row (2002 and 2003) where he didn't miss a single start either season. So you can't be certain that, just because he's had injuries the past couple of years, that it will continue. Between 2001 and 2003, Wood made 93 starts. Only after the 2003 campaign in which he threw the most pitches in baseball did he break down again.
  8. I just came here to post about this. I like Grossman, but this is a move that needs to be made. I don't know how good he'd be without LT.
  9. You do realize that Clemens only won 20 games 5 times in 21 years? Wood hasn't been in the league for 10 years yet.
  10. I would have rather had his 1 year deal than Rusch's 2 year deal.
  11. ..and uninformed, not-so-veiled racism and sexism.
  12. I just don't see how someone could take 2 incidents (The cork and the completely meaningless Game 162 thing from 2004) and wipe out a decade of pretty much being the best player in franchise history, and oft times the only reason to tune in. Sosa's 21 should fly above Santos, Williams and beside Banks' in a few years. If it doesn't, it's a shame. He was the best player in the history of the franchise. Only Hack Wilson comes close. .
  13. I think so. yes. ...with a healthy rotation it would. God playing LF for the Cubs couldn't save us from some combo of Z/Prior/Wood missing significant time. A top 5 offense could help offset one signifigant pitching injury. A top 5 offense got Cincinnati 73 wins last season. Texas (another top 5 offense) had 79 wins last season. ONE park effects TWO one significant pitching injury to us should still leave us with a well above average pitching staff, which cincy and texas didnt have. What Tree said.

  15. There is a lot of camaraderie among the writers. We have to live with each other for eight months! The traveling writers are myself, Kiley, Sully, Jeff Vorva of the Daily Southtown (about half the road games) and Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. We all get on each other's nerves at times, I'm sure. It's a lot less crowded on the road because the Chicago TV and radio stations generally don't travel. We compete with each other, but we remain civil and friendly. It's that way in most cities. In some cities, I've seen it get a little to a lot nasty, with guys not even speaking to one another. Tell Carrie that there's a new website where she can buy a Neifi T-shirt.
  16. I'll be happy to donate after we close on our house!
  17. I actually think this would be a savvy move by a PR savvy group, but I don't know that they didn't napalm their bridges with Sosa after 2004. I don't know if enough time has passed for that to be a possibility.
  18. Except that he hasn't been healthy in 3 years, and makes about 4 times what Walker makes. The marginal improvement isn't worth the salary or the injury risk.
  19. You're the truth, Rocket. The truth.
  20. Correctomundo! Wait, Rocket invented OPS? no, i invented something BETTER than ops OPS+?
  21. Correctomundo! Wait, Rocket invented OPS?
  22. I would pass on both Vidro and Soriano.
  23. My guess is that the Reds would want to deal Dunn and Freel in different deals to maximize the return. Trading Freel makes little sense unless it brings back players they couldn't get through trading Dunn alone. My guess is that they could expect Pie, Williams, Hill for Dunn alone. Whether or not they believe Freel is worth Dopirak or not, I don't know, but I'd suspect that they could trade him somewhere else for a high prospect pitcher. I'd do Williams, Pie and Hill for Dunn. Freel is like a luxury-we don't really need him, seeing as we have enough middle IF as it is. I wonder if Cinci would want a Marshall or Gallagher instead of Hill, though.
