  1. I understand the reasoning, but I just can't bring myself to root against them once a game starts. I'm exactly the same way. If I watch the game, I end up getting really mad at certain plays/players, but I root for the team to do well and win. If I don't watch the game like it is now 90% of the time, and I hear that they lost, I just say to myself "haha, figures, hopefully Baker is gone" I don't understand how people like my friend can stand it. He adopted the Royals maybe 2-3 years ago and religiously watches every game on gameday.
  2. Finally, people are writing what we're all thinking and know.
  3. Stone is off his rocker. Cedeno/Izturis middle infield will only work on a team that actually has above average corner outfield production, and this deal strips one of the power sources in the lineup as well with no replacement.
  4. Speakin of AAA second basemen, Mike Fontenot has his line up to .316/.402/.472 Why not deal Walker if he isn't going to be brought back and see what he can do.
  5. Umm, maybe you didn't get the news, but we already have a Carlos Beltran coming back from the DL. Just in time to save the pennant race.
  6. Mike Fontenot is putting together a nice season in Iowa. .308/.396/.452 in 200+ ABs, thus far. That OBP would be nice at 2B in Chicago between the Walker and Patterson eras and then on the bench.
  7. Great news, gotta love them catchers who can rake.
  8. Close to the ledge, so very close.
  9. Why is Angel Guzman left to die in the bullpen?
  10. Right on. Maybe a leadoff role could bring back the very patient Murton as well. Cedeno is the 8 hitter on a team unless they are A) really bad or B) starts taking more walks and has an OBP over league average P.S. I don't like Neifi
  11. I don't think that gets it done, and I wouldn't do it unless the contract is split up great for the Cubs. Here's some facts. Hunter is being paid 10.75 million for this year and 12 million for 07 with a 2 million buyout option. Juan Pierre is being paid 5.75 million for this year. Hunter turns 31 this July. This year he has an OBP of .333 and .419 slg compared to career numbers of .321/.456 So, to get a declining, unproductive player, you'd have to take on ~ 2.5 million for the rest of this year and either have to pay him 12 million next year or buy him out for an additional 2. I'm assuming you'd want him for more than this year, considering this team likely isn't making the playoffs, so you would have to pay that amount. The Twins could probably get more than a rent-a-player at his lowest value and a pitcher at low value and a B prospect. Not a good deal for either team. I'd rather save that cash, sign a SP in the offseason and watch Felix Pie put up comparable numbers to Torii Hunter at the league minimum.
  12. Well, any .400 OBP guy walks often, that's part of what's behind the whole idea. So I'm not sure where you're going with this... :-k There are some instances like the 99/00 Nomar, but I don't understand that 100 walk disclaimer. Thats generally how you get the .400 OBP, but if you're point is that anyone who doesn't walk and strikes out 200+ times isn't good, then I'll have to agree with you.
  13. Sure, trade them straight up and even out the salary owed by each team, and you'd have my support for the deal. The reality is he's probably much much much more expensive.
  14. I think the danger with Prior has been overworking him at a young age. He's not another Wood in the way that Wood's throwing motion is god awful and he's lucky he was able to put together 3 years of good baseball. As long as Prior isn't overextended, it really doesn't matter where he pitches. It sounds like he's taking the same approach as he normally does. If he develops any other tendonitis or something, then by all means shut him down.
  15. I didn't get that on it either, but the cache could be it since I looked at this very page 1-2 weeks ago.
  16. Booooo, bad idea. Huge salary, not a lot of production and likely overvalued on the market.
  17. I think the strikeout stat for hitters is solely useful for evaluating young talent and how easily these players will adjust to higher levels of play. If they strike out more, it will be much more difficult to make consistent contact when the competition gets better. But if a player is striking out in the majors, but also producing there is no further level to worry about. The whole productive outs way of thinking is insignificant in relation to raw production.
  18. I think the Cubs real problem as a lot of power but not a lot of OBP. They hit a lot of solo home runs and were very inconsistent. The Reds are a very good offensive ballclub, the Cubs were average.
  19. Good read. Good stuff about his breaking balls and development of changeup. I'm looking forward to seeing this guy get his shot in the big leagues.
  20. Great article, Bruce! I know its an article, not a book, but I get the feeling the casual baseball fan who loves his batting average and rbis won't really grasp how important OBP is and just view it as some secondary stat that would be nice to have. But even so, for those who know what you're talking about, its a refreshing read, and well done.
  21. a friend of mine go some free club level sox tickets last week so I went to enjoy some pretty good baseball. i realized then what useless info was on the scoreboards for each player. for example, the server in our section said that once he saw one for jose valentin that was something like "brother once was 3rd in mvp voting in the puerto rican league" No, thank you. Keep the organ music, ivy, scoreboard and falling concrete.
  22. WTF? That doesn't make any sense AT ALL. By the way, I don't want Soriano on the team. umm ... point is Soriano's OPS (that would be the last number over there on the right) this year is astounding, given that "RFK" means "Place of Exceedingly Prolific Outs." (Or maybe I missed some sarcasm here ... it was a REALLY long day ... ) RCAA for active 2b in the top 50 all time (and I admit for Soriano we should list his position as "2b?") as of 2004. Biggio 318 Kent 232 Durham 60 Soriano 58 For reference purposes, Ryno checked in at 207, or 17th best in history. Todd Walker (the Louisiana Lumberjack) was at -26. No doubt Soriano would be a significant upgrade over the flotsam that has populated the keystone this year. He's also a head case who will swing at any pitch in the 312 area code. The ideal 5th or 6th place hitter, I'm afraid the Cubs will give away the store and bat him leadoff. Yes, I fear they'll let Pierre go, sign Soriano and Soriano will be stuck leading off where his numbers really don't belong. A pretty low obp, high slg belongs 5-6 regardless of speed.
  23. Real pricey and all indications were pointing to decline after last year. He will likely not fall off as much as others expected, but I don't think it's safe to say he is going to be able to continue these numbers even for the extent of this year.
  24. Konerko in LF with anyone but Anderson in CF would be the funniest defensive outfield ever. While they're at it, they can put Ozuna in RF.
  25. Who's Mark Buerhle?
