  1. Raisin, thanks again for kicking off another year. Like many, these threads were the reason I started lurking NSBB back in the days in Ryan Harvey and Brian Dopirak.
  2. I still wonder how Brek would defend against the tough wingers with great technical ability (better than E Castillo at least). I'd like to see him and Villafana as the LBs for the Copa and see how they look. If those two can lock down the position, then we can forget Fullback Fab and put a nice midfield together for the rest of the cycle.
  3. The second one was so ridiculous. I think without that, Atletico holds on for a 1-1 at the worst. Getting out of there 2-1 is a victory with how much Barca was peppering the goal.
  4. Miazga went 90 for Chelsea today, albeit against Aston Villa. Hiddink seems to be positive on him, so this could end up being a really good move.
  5. Yeah, if I were Matheny, I'd go with another starter plus the bullpen tomorrow versus Hammel, knowing Lester is waiting in game five. Of course, they may want to maximize their chances in game four, and hope for some hometown magic in game five. Either way, it's far less than ideal. They're not in a good spot. Broxton, Siegrist and Wainwright all threw 20+ last night. I can see the logic in going to Lackey since he's got the best chance to go deep. Everyone gets the day off before Game 5 so they'd be better suited to piece together a game then. All that being said, there's nothing they can actually do to win Game 4.
  6. Back before they moved the kickoff up to the 35, I remember the ST coach at the time said Gould didn't get many touchbacks because he was trying for hang time to help the coverage. I wonder if they've returned to that now that he can't routinely get it into the end zone.
  7. IU has a ton of experience in winning the close games this year, albeit against competition several levels below Ohio St. I think IU puts up some points to keep it within a couple scores, and maybe make it interesting late in game, but this team just doesn't seem at the point to even pose a challenge to a top ranked team.
  8. One positive could be the doubleheader hangover for the Pirates/Cards. If there could be a game 163 on top of that, things would be looking pretty sweet.
  9. EPL was in danger of losing their 4th UCL spot in 17-18 to Italy before this loss. Can't imagine this helps, although Roma also had a bad loss.
  10. Couldn't get anything to work for mine except 1 standalone ticket in the WC game, which I didn't buy. I was on pretty early, too (about 10:15 CDT)
  11. Same here. Got picked, living down in Bloomington, IN, but I should be able to make the trip. I actually already took October 12th off which should have Game 3 and would be the most likely date for a home game. May not be able to use all 4 that are available to buy.
  12. It looks like they separate out the samples for players who were traded mid-year. Castillo was +.2 with the Cubs with a sample of 590. With the Mariners, he was -.9 over 465 and then the -9.4 over 4876 with the DBacks. I wonder if that's completely a sample size issue, there's a coaching explanation, or if the Cubs staff is just a bit more frameable.
  13. Lester will go Game 1 and Arrieta would be on short rest game 2, no? So wouldn't a bullpen game most likely be game 2? Arrieta goes game 3? Isn't the DS Schedule the Friday and Saturday after the WC game on Wednesday for games 1 and 2? NL schedule: WC game Wednesday October 7 Then Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday Thursday. WC game pitcher won't be available until Game 3 (on normal rest). Game 2 would be 2 days rest and bad idea. I think you throw Lester game 1 and if you win you go bullpen game 2, Arrieta game 3, Hendricks game 4, Lester Game 5. So, does the 'if you win' contingency imply Hendricks Game 2 if Lester blows it? Basically, the bullpen game is a swing of Game 2/4 depending on result?
  14. It might be the best to plan on that in Game 2. Arrieta would be ideally be going deep in Game 1 and the day off follows Game 2 to rest the bullpen. It might be a decent plan to go for a bullpen day on Game 4, but you might need more innings out of the pen in Game 3.
  15. To put these split-squad lineups in perspective, here was the starting lineup on September 29, 2013. Castro Watkins Rizzo Schierholtz Sweeney Murphy Bogusevic Boscan
  16. Alright, here's my attempt at optimizing the platoon split squad Cubs vs. RHP C - Montero 1B - Coghlan 2B - La Stella 3B - Herrera SS - Russell LF - Schwarber CF - Jackson RF - Soler vs. LHP C - Ross 1B - Rizzo 2B - Baez 3B - Bryant SS - Castro LF - Szczur CF - Fowler RF - Denorfia
  17. You could give the two lineups some pretty strong platoon advantages and they would mash their respective sides. I'd probably have Rizzo in against LHP and Coghlan as the 1B against RHP. If I had a baseball video game at my disposal, this would already be happening.
  18. Martial is having a good start for Man U. 3 goals in the first two weeks there. In other news, the Fire looked to have cleaned house with Yallop and the assistant coaches gone.
  19. Yes, but I'm concerned with the lack of pressure. 0 sacks, 1 hit on Rodgers. Yeah, the pressure did induce a few holding penalties, but was pretty much coming from one area at a time and easy for Rodgers to evade. Anyone who's not a complete statue could deal with that pass rush. The few times they brought a few more guys, Rodgers quickly identified, got the pass out quickly, and the CBs couldn't get off their blocks. In the end, nothing was a glaring hole and the defense seemed like a well-coached unit that competed. The lack of impact talent just means that very few big defensive plays will come against elite offensive units.
  20. The Cubs could also be considered a lucrative destination at that point since a GM could do a full rebuild without accountability for a few years. I think someone even started a thread a few years back asking of Epstein had the best front office job situation in all of sports due to the lack of immediate expectations and relative amount of resources available.
  21. Goldman, Wilson, Jeffery and Royal are active. Sam Acho is listed as active, but I thought he was released so something is up. Bostic, Porter and Carey are the most the notable inactives.
  22. Raw, you got me interested in this game. At the very least this ends with me drinking more today.
  23. Alfredo Morales and FC Ingolstadt drew Wolfsburg today 0-0. They are having a nice start to their first Bundesliga season.
