  1. Berkman/Dunn for Helton/Bannister is bush league as hell but so is Weeks/Wilson for Utley, and I actually like Weeks. True. But once the commissioner starts evaluating trades rather than just rumber stamping everything that's not collusion, he's committed to trying to fairly evaluate all trades for the entire season (which is why I agree w/ cheapseats re how a commissioner should run a league - don't interfere unless you suspect foul play). But to veto a trade and then make a terribly one-sided deal in your favor is total BS. Y! should have a blackball list for guys like that.
  2. I hope by "private" you don't mean these are your friends. If so, you need new friends.
  3. I think the issue is saying one is better. If the hypo is "better player v. experience" you have to take the better player. But if the difference in the 2 is statistically immaterial (saying a few more points of OBP and SLG) so it's not clear 1 is better, then the experience might tip the scales if there's a longer history of solid performance that could suggest that the experienced player is more likely to maintain his performance. But if you're really looking for someone to say they'd prefer intangibles - like experience and perceived leadership - to talent or on-the-field performance (I'm picturing circa 2000 Cap'n Jetes v. ARod or something), you'll probably have a couple people say that, but not many b/c they'd be wrong.
  4. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-080407-kosuke-fukudome-chicago-cubs-piniella,0,7789593.story I had a sudden image of Kosuke turning around to bat RH against a LOOGY late in a tight game, ala Rocky II. Fukudome, with the bases loaded and 2 out, down 3 to the Mets in Game 7 of the NLCS, facing Wager is down 0/2: Fukudome (tapping off cleats): I'll admit it, you are better than I am Wagner (rubbing the ball): Then why are you smiling? Fukudome (settles in batters box): b/c I know something that you don't Wagner (firing nasty breaking ball): What's that? Fukudome: I...am not left-handed [switches to RH batters box and crushes a grand slam]
  5. If Ronny had picked up the 9th inning RBI to go with the 3-run double, that might have done it. I was really pulling for Ronny there as I thought that single AB could have earned him a bigger chance this year. But Theriot walked and stole second, so Lou will probably start him and put him back in the top spot tomorrow.
  6. we'd be looking great with ray durham at 2b, jd drew in rf and jason schmidt in the starting rotation I wanted Schmidt, so I have to eat crow on that one. I didn't want Schmidt, but I want us to look back on Drew v. Soriano when Drew's contract expires in 2011 and see how we feel about owing another $54m to Soriano over the next 3 years. Drew struggled last year but he's off to a hot start and I'd still rather have his career .390 OBP near the top of the order than Soriano's .326. Judging long term deals after 1 year is risky.
  7. And the Cubs are equally entitled to reconsider not blocking the view. No argument here. A handshake deal is legally non-binding. It's only valid as long as both parties say it is. Some contracts have to be in writing. But your second sentence is a terrible over-simplification.
  8. don't be so sure. he has the almighty "potential" and that allows him a lot longer rope. Are you really arguing that young players that have shown great success in the minors shouldn't be given more "rope" than players that have been average or bad in the minors and downright terrible in the majors in their peak years? not necessarily, especially if said player has used the rope to hang himself in previous years. I don't know how many times people can remind you that completely writing off people because they were forced into action when they weren't ready (at age 23) is a bad idea. It's apparent that no logic is going to change your opinion on this matter so I'll just try to ignore your posts comparing Ronny and Theriot.

  10. Where were you guys 3 days ago! We had the draft Tuesday night and now we have an 8 team roto league.
  11. The beauty of this move is Soriano will get 2 hits today and everyone (including Lou) who says he can't hit anywhere other than first will have their beliefs "confirmed" - ugh.
  12. I agree that he doesn't only look for OBP and patience. But he does look for players he believes are undervalued. I would think he believes Murton is undervalued by the Cubs. That said, Murton's has more service time than Beane would probably want in a player, given that the As aren't contending.
  13. You of all people on this board should not be making something I say into a racial argument. And I know for a fact from your wishing bad things on him last year that you don't like Neifi one bit. Que? He's my roommate and I would hope by now he knows I'm not a racist. I would think he was joking but even joking on that topic I don't like. Also a large majority of you guys wouldn't know he's joking. Ok. Now can you explain what made Neifi lazy and stupid when he was here? He was bad at baseball, but I don't remember him being lazy or particularly stupid.
  14. Wait a minute. I know DSM has improved the downtown area (and continues to do so, as I understand). But 75-100 places within walking distance from the park? How far are you walking?
  15. who's your SS if Furcal is traded?
  16. You're just prejudiced against people that urinate on their hands.
  17. The problem with the hindsight argument is that many people knew the minute Soriano signed that his contract was a disaster. The only way it's possibly worth it is if we win a WS in the next year or 2 before he becomes a horribly overpaid SLG-heavy .800 OPS LF, rather than a horribly overpaid SLG-heavy .900 OPS LF.
  18. Vertical leap? I can't remember the last time both my feet left the ground at the same time.
  19. Probably true, but Theriot is leading off. That's why I have the bigger problem with him starting over Ronny. At least there's a chance that Ronny's offense in the 7/8 spot is so much better than Theriot's offense leading off that it off-sets his defense (assuming it would really be worse than Theriot's).
  20. Just thought of that, huh? Except Lou has been quite adament saying his CF has to hit in the 8th spot, which means Ronny would actually hit 7th. Cedeno 7th or 8th sounds better than Theriot 1st. That's a heck of a lot fewer PAs for one of the worst hitters on the team, and a significant increase in PAs for the better hitters.
  21. Just thought of that, huh? Well, I said that I had thought of it, not just thought of it. I also don't know that it "likely means more runs for the team", unless you care to prove that statement. I was just messin. But I do think having Cedeno 7th or 8th and the better hitters getting more PA will mean more runs for the team. Obviously I can't prove that, given that we don't even know how each of these guys will perform, let alone what actual effect the lineup position would have.
  22. Just thought of that, huh?
