    He's got enough options who have been pretty decent of late that it's inexcusable to send a guy like Strop, who's pitched the last 2 days and has spotty control to begin with, out there for a 3rd day in a row in a 0-0 game. Parker would have been a much better choice, if for no other reason than he's fresh. It's just another instance of Sveum making a very curious decision when it comes to BP usage. He's just bad at it.

    Trading for guys like Olt, Grimm, Arrieta and Strop emphasizes a more near-term approach than trading for higher ceiling, lower-level types. You can disagree but you know you are wrong. Plus the fact that of all the guys they traded, the only ones they had control over for more than the rest of the season they were traded were Maholm and Soriano. How about signing Jackson to a 4 year deal? They've done a bunch of stuff that indicates near term desire to compete, meaning next year, not this year.

    I wonder what the odds were of the Cardinals making the playoffs on that date. Probably not all that terrible since the division was so awful. So depressing. They won the wild card, and the Brewers won 96 games. Bah, I was thinking 2006 when they won 83 games.

    Man, he's seemingly been around for so long (in my brain with the whole attachment to the FO) that it seems like he should be at least 25 or so. The fact that he's still only 23 definitely gives me some hope that he'll evolve into the .300/.400/.500 guy we all want him to be.

    This is where I am with Baez as well. I don't think it's nitpicking to be extremely concerned with the BB/K ratio at this point, but the power is unbelievable. But the concern is (and should be) very real. We've seen this story before: Player A (age 19 at high A & AA): .297/.341/.540 34/122 BB/K ratio (133 games) Player B (age 20 at high A & AA): .265/.327/.556 27/110 BB/K ratio (96 games) Player A is Joel Guzman. He was ranked the #5 prospect and was out of MLB by 2010 at the age of 25. Player B is Baez. I don't think you can just look at those numbers in a vacuum though. Baez made a significant adjustment at Daytona and dropped the K rate to like 22% his last month or so. There was a definite progression in his approach and he didn't just get promoted on the premise of a hot month like used to happen. Now, if we don't see a more positive trend on the Ks toward the end of his time in AA, even if it's only down to 22% or so, then I'll be concerned.

    Cubs are 41-42 since April 23 (they started 5-13). Man, if they'd been able to win even 4 of those games in that 12 game losing streak, they'd be 50-51.

    Not true. Amphetamines were made illegal without a prescription in 1965. So, they were in fact illegal for over half of Aaron's 23 years in MLB. And why do you get to be the arbitrator of all that is or isn't okay in terms of PEDs?

    That actually would probably work pretty well since they're sliding Melancon into the closer role and will need a set up guy to fill his slot. What do they have that would be worth it? And do they need OF help as well?

    Neither Coleman nor Rosscup are on the 40 man. I'm curious to see if Cabrera looks good for a few weeks in Iowa out of the pen if he gets a shot some time in August since he's already on it.

    Let's just go ahead and ignore the fact that the only OF spot Vitters can play is LF while Lake is in the process of showing he can play anywhere in the OF. Also, I don't get the Vitters hate, but he's certainly not as valuable as Lake if they hit exactly the same.

    Um yeah that's what roids do. Sometimes. Horse steroids do. What year did Bonds's head get big. That was the year I thought he started. Maybe before 2002. It's pretty well documented that he started taking them after the 1998 season because he was pissed Sosa and McGwire were getting all the attention when he thought he was a far superior player to them. He started juicing out of his mind at that point and turned into the incredible Hulk.

    We have the physical evidence on Bonds, not Aaron. I give people the benefit of the doubt. Same for Pujols. You have no "physical evidence" because nobody was looking and testing, yet you've had people in the game talk about how PED usage goes back decades. Of course. But has anyone accused Aaron and seen him take them? No, so I give him the benefit. We know ARod took them. I'm not keeping anyone out of the HOF with no evidence, steroid era or not. You said yourself he admitted to taking them once and we all know that once you go green you never get clean.

    So then you have a theory as to how many more he hit because of them? Outside of his one crazy season, bonds managed to tack on about 7-10 from his best pre-usage power seasons, and he was one of the greatest hitters of all time. Shaving off about 10 home runs from each of McGwire's big power/full/full-ish/around 100 games played seasons still has him around 450 home runs for his career. You're really saying that the guy hit most of the home runs in his career simply because of PEDs? I don't think you can really use Bonds' HR totals as a baseline since he was getting pitched to about once every 4 or 5 PAs.
