That fly ball last night is probably the best argument out there for the team error. It absolutely wasn't an error on PCA and it's a shame Shota gets tagged with another HR and the earned runs when the ball that was hit should have been turned into an out. That's a rule change I could 100% get behind.
Well, I was going to say Joe Ryan, but it looks like his elbow is trying to fall off so scratch that. Sanzatela doesn't miss enough bats for my taste. I guess that leaves me at Reid Detmers if the Angels make him available. Seems like a guy who could use some of the Cubs pitch lab creativity and he's not a free agent until after 2028.
Is there anything here with this guy? Looks like he was a minor league FA signing last year after some time on a summer league team. I couldn't find anything on a pitch mix or velocity in a quick search.
Sounds a little like Nico where he has a great hit tool and needs to make better swing decisions so he's swinging at pitches he can hit hard and not just because he can hit them?
Bernstein absolutely torched Warren on his podcast yesterday and deservedly so. He's completely horsefeathered this whole thing up and as Dan says, he's basically been running a con that's come to a head and there's nothing to do now but get rid of him. The fact that he didn't listen to all the consultants he hired and hasn't been in Springfield to manage this and try to get votes is inexcusable and the peak of incompetence.
Nobody is saying they ignored symptoms, they're saying he's been bad since he got beaned and there might be underlying stuff that's causing problems resulting in the slump. The Yankees didn't ignore symptoms per se, but Rizzo certainly could have used an IL stint to get right and based on the numbers, it's hard to argue that's not the case with Nico.
I can't get any of the big names together. Best I've done is DWade, Gervin, McGrady, the Mailman, and Walt Bellamy for 71-11.
Edit: Just pulled Steph, Harden, Grant Hill, Elvin Hayes and Kareem for 81-1.
I'm not sure that's really true. The NFL will only back so much stadium debt based on their own rules and the McCaskey's aren't rich like other owners who've bought teams in the last 20 years. I'm in total agreement with you that they need to figure it out on their own and not bilk the taxpayers though.
I think he needs to be in Iowa to get more stretched out and additionally get some confidence back. I'm not sure if he'll ever be any good, but he kind of got a raw deal getting rushed up because of the Cabrera injury before he really got to a full starter pitch count.
I'll also ask why. He's likely only up until Boyd comes off the IL so they have an extra arm for this series and maybe Jamo goes to the IL after this start and Boyd takes his spot.
Assuming Boyd and Cabrera come back healthy, even if Steele gives them nothing this year 2 SP seems like overkill. Between Brown, Shota, and Rea, you've got 3 viable guys and then maybe you get some innings from Steele down the stretch as a bonus. And I agree with you on not gutting the system for this team unless we see some serious positive regression from the offense soon.
I was speaking more in the abstract of giving up A LOT for a rental and not so much with Skubal or any other specific player in mind, but I get what you're saying. He got Cabrera, who has several years of control and Tucker, who only had one year, but they were either going to re-sign him or at minimum get a pick out of the deal and not walk away completely empty handed.
I think that's a nuanced thing. He's given up value for a full season or for a guy with control, but not for a rental and I have a hard time blaming him for that if prices really were what's been reported last year at the deadline.
Tucker played in the playoff series they lost. Horton did not. I'm not sure how you can say with a straight face Tucker's midseason injury affected the outcome more. They also won a 3 game series that left them starting their best remaining pitcher on short rest because they were an arm short and I'd bet they wouldn't have won a 5 game series against the Padres either last year.
Wait, you think Tucker getting hurt in the middle of the season affected the Cubs playoff performance more than their best pitcher getting hurt and Shota being terrible? Yikes.
They were 11th in position player WAR and 23rd in pitcher WAR in 2024. You're not going to win this argument. The pitching is, and has been, a bigger problem and even to the point you made, it's been propped up by defense significantly or it would be even worse.
Yeah, outside of that one huge thing, his tenure has been an unmitigated disaster, both in PR and actions. He comes off as a self-important douche and the sooner they send him packing the better.
Top 6 at 5 spots and top 10 at 6 seems good no? It's almost like having pitching that can carry you through offensive slumps is as important as having an offense that can bail you out when the pitching isn't as good as expected on a particular day.
I think most would agree with you. The people focusing on adding bats are a bit puzzling to me because those guys have mostly proven records and will regress to the mean and be fine. The pitching has been sub par for years now and all the injuries are only making it worse.
Yeah, I cited that specific example for a reason. He absolutely had more value to the Cubs than he would have other teams for several reasons. Also, Jed went out and got Carson Kelly, so he's likely looking at very similar things as he did when bringing Ross in. This is just a dumb argument to try to defend when we're talking about the specific guys on the Cubs roster. In general, yeah, there are absolutely guys who will give the pitcher a better chance at success, but trying to make that case with Kelly vs. Amaya is silly when this FO picked both of those guys.
You're missing the point. Shota not having good velocity or being able to locate his fastball or not hang his splitter are completely independent of who's catching.
You did say that Ben will pitch well because Amaya is behind the plate and if he's behind the plate today they would most likely win. There are so many other variables that boiling the game down to who is catching being the major determinant of who wins the game makes you sound absolutely silly.
