  1. It was time to panic when he didn't re-sign with the Cards.
  2. Josh Hamilton "mashes" a "towering" homerun to dead center. Marty Brenneman says that the Cubs have spent money like a drunken sailor, giving lots of money to some players who have been "average at best." And at that, I'm changing channels to listen to the cubs.
  3. Marty Brenneman and Jeff Brantley complain about how often Bellhorn strikes out. Bellhorn promptly hits a two-run homerun.
  4. Freel gets on base, Brandon Phillips homers, and the game is tied.
  5. Luis Matos hits his second homer of the day - earlier I said Jose Hernandez hit one, but now the radio guys say it was Matos.
  6. Dunn walks in his second PA. Marty Brenneman wants Dunn to get more RBI's, raise his average, and lower his strikeouts. It would, of course, be entirely possible for Dunn to do all three of those things without improving as a player. 1. Dunn's RBI totals will largely depend on who hits in front of him and behind him. He could play exactly as he did last year and have more or less RBI this year. 2. I'm all for raising BA and lowering K's, but it's possible to do both while also lowering OBP and SLG. Also: the reds have signed Dustin Hermanson.
  7. I read somewhere that Dunn came to camp having lost some weight and looking like he's in great shape. That's a scary thought for the rest of the NL Central if it's true. I've read that, too. The Reds announcers were emphasizing that he's working on his defense and trying not to be overly selective at the plate - he's going to try to swing at any pitch he thinks he can drive, even if it's one that's outside the strike zone. Conversely, he might take pitches that are strikes that he doesn't think he can drive.
  8. Freel hits a double off of Tom Gorzelanny. Also: I didn't know Dick Pole was with the Reds now. It's always good to have Dick Pole around.
  9. Eric Milton gives up another homerun, this one to Jose Hernandez. Marty Brenneman says that, even though Milton has given up two homers in two innings, we're not seeing the "same old Eric Milton" because the wind is to blame for both longballs.
  10. Reds commentators say Alex Gonzalez could hit 20 homeruns this year playing his home games at GAB. PECOTA says he's likely to hit 12.
  11. Josh Hamilton grounds out to first. Reds analyst mentions that if he doesn't stick on the roster, he has to go back to Chicago.
  12. Dunn just hit a no-doubter homerun.
  13. I'm listening on Gameday Audio. Milton gave up a leadoff homerun. Jack Wilson is batting second. Thank you, Jim Tracy, for this gift to the rest of the NL Central. The Reds' announce team says that Jack had an awful 2005 but really bounced back in 2006. Jack Wilson in 2006: .273 .316 .370
  14. He is who I thought he is. Thank goodness we let him off the hook here. He had two errors, too.
  15. What Dusty did during his tenure still hurts the Cubs today. Changing managers didn't undo all the mileage that Dusty put on young arms in 2003, for example.
  16. Then he shouldn't be. How many closers can only get out right-handed batters? Here's how he's done against lefties from 1998 to 2006 (in reverse order, so the 2006 season is first): BAA OBP SLG OPS .310 .395 .444 .839 .278 .394 .368 .762 .222 .417 .370 .787 .300 .410 .493 .903 .332 .440 .550 .991 .270 .368 .448 .816 .245 .342 .414 .756 .282 .389 .466 .855 .394 .500 .596 1.096 Righties average about 200 fewer points of OPS against Dempster, so he does have good value against them, but sending him into a 9th inning to face Hatteberg-Griffey-Encarnacion-Dunn verges on conceding the game. Same with Jenkins-Fielder-Hart-Koskie. I'm not even advocating "closer by committee," but it bears mentioning that the idea that "closer by committee" doesn't work is treated like a truism by sports talk radio when there's little or no evidence that such is the case. How in the world did any team ever get outs 25-27 before Tony Larussa blessed us with "the closer?" Dempster's role would be to get out right-handed batters. If he has "issues" with that - tough.
  17. Dempster shouldn't ever pitch to a left-handed hitter in the ninth inning or any other inning. If not Wuertz, Howry should close and Dempster should be used against righties only. Unless Dempster adds a pitch that's effective against lefties, he's a ROOGY.
  18. I far prefer "newer" stats. Batting average is next to useless. RBI is more of a team stat and is very influenced by where the batter hits in the order and whether Corey Patterson and Neifi Perez are hitting in front of him. ERA is misleading because it doesn't account for the difference between Great American Ballpark and PETCO. 2) What particular statistics are you comfortable with using and interpreting? Any stats for which formulas are publicly available. 3) What particular statistics might as well be a completely different language to you? Some of the advanced fielding metrics are difficult. ------------------ Ideally, I want statistics compare the actual contributions of players or teams on a level playing field.
  19. Clearly a lie as Murray prefers the telegraph to electronic mail.
  20. Awesome stuff from Levine. Bite me, Joe Morgan. The other former players are idiots just like you. I love Bruce Levine for that.
  21. I don't think he looks like a steroid user is supposed to look, so I'm pretty sure he's clean just like Ken Griffey.
  22. Maybe someone will write a book on Gary Matthews Jr someday. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=2808
  23. It already is a witch hunt.
  24. As a fantasy addict, I'd certainly be interested.
  25. We assume Griffey was clean because he never showed a single one of the hallmark signs for steroid use -- extreme muscle increase, bigger head, acne , etc. Further, most "baseball people" tend to agree that Griffey has a textbook perfect swing for hitting HRs, meaning that he didn't rely on sheer muscle to hit the ball. Griffey's uses flexibility and quick reflexes to generate batspeed, not his triceps. One last thing, Griffey was injured all the time. Guys on the juice don't spend much time on the DL with injuries. Part of what steroids do is cause your body to heal at an extremely fast pace (keep in mind that your body healing itself after a workout is what actually builds muscle). Griffey just never fit the mold of a steroid user. i never saw any huge size difference in alex sanchez or rafael palmeiro. Griffey is clean. He's just too nice to use steroids.
