  1. Unlikely that anyone was offering him a 3B because he already has David Wright as well. My initial thought after reviewing his transactions were that he traded Ordonez because Braun could fill the UTIL spot, but that's unlikely as that trade happened just a few days after Braun was picked up, and it'd be pretty dumb to count on Braun to fill that spot the rest of the year based on such a small sample size. Yes, that would be dumb, but it would not be dumb to count on Braun because PECOTA projected him to be one of the best hitters in baseball this year.
  2. I hope they aren't holding their breath for that to happen. I hope they are.
  3. Agreed. By team defensive efficiency, the Cubs are 3rd in MLB so far this year. One can argue over whether they'll maintain that rate, but so far the defense has been one of the best in baseball. The offense is 9th in the NL in runs scored. There is more to be gained from improving the offense than improving the defense. The question is whether this trade will improve the offense. So far this year, Bowen has been about 75% as productive as Barrett in about 40% of the at-bats. However: 1) Small sample size alert. 2) Bowen's prior success this year isn't a guarantee of continued success for the remainder of the season. Also, FWIW, by Clay Davenport's fielding metric, Bowen's defense may be just as bad as Barrett's.
  4. Derrek Lee vs. Mets 2006, or was that 2005? 2005...ironically it was dempster's first blown save as the new closer I was there! What a great game.
  5. There is a light that never goes out...
  6. Murton was #3 in groundballs among qualified hitters last year. He will hit into a lot of double plays, and it shouldn't surprise anyone. He needs to change his swing if he's ever going to hit for power. Alex Rios did it.
  7. The alternative is bringing in Eyre for 2 of 3 RH hitters, we're in trouble either way. Also unappetizing. Ahh, those multiyear deals to proven middle relievers really shored up the bullpen, no?
  8. Wow. Just checked on this game. I can't believe Lou brought in Dempster knowing he'd probably face several consecutive left-handed batters. That should be reason enough for an immediate firing.
  9. I'd want no part of Fergie as manager. Or Sandberg, either, for that matter.
  10. There's a good chance that the Cubs won't draft him if he's available anyway.
  11. English majors score highest on the GRE. I don't remember where history majors place. Business students place last.
  12. congrats! what's your job? Similar to what I'm doing now, yet different. It's in hedge fund administration. Accounting stuff. I'm putting my English Literature degree to great use! My grad degree in English got me a job in financial research. I love the job, by the way. Really? That's pretty interesting. My English degree usually raises some eyebrows during interviews. Probably my least favorite question to answer in an interview. At the end of my 2nd interview, I met with the Senior VP of my organization. He asked how my degree helped prepare me for the job. I smiled and said "research is research" and told him my skills were transferable. Thinking back, at the first interview, one of the VP's mentioned that he was a Cardinals fan when I told him I was from Chicago. It turned out he and I had been at the same Cubs/Cards game at Wrigley in 2004 - the one where Pujols hit three homeruns and Latroy melted down at the end of the game. I think talking baseball helped get me the job.

  14. Very poor lineup construction. And he had been hitting cleanup earlier in the year.
  15. Is it kosher to close the roof in the bottom half of an inning?
  16. It is supposed to rain this afternoon, but it would probably take quite a bit to puncture a hole in the roof. didn't they have a big leak two or three years ago? Yep. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4196/is_20030110/ai_n10853004
  17. It is supposed to rain this afternoon, but it would probably take quite a bit to puncture a hole in the roof. I assume they've fixed it, but the roof didn't do a good job of keeping rain out in the past.
  18. Dominican guys like to hop. Signed, Gary Sheffield This made me
  19. Well, Fielder and Braun are on most of my fantasy teams...
  20. His OPS dropped about 100 points late in the game when he had to face lefty specialists. And he wasn't very good as a Cub.
