  1. The charts on MLB show that most of his hits are to left field, and it's been that way for years. The majority of his hits are to left field, and the majority of his outs are to right. His power is certainly to left. Rarely does he hit a homerun to the opposite way. I know what the ESPN and Fox scouting reports say, but the charts clearly show that most of his success comes when he pulls the ball.
  2. Every single offseason. When's the last time we signed a top-tier free agent? Yes, we have a high payroll, but we also make a lot more than most other teams. Pointing out that the Trib spends more than Tampa Bay or Kansas City or Cincinnati is fine, but they should be spending more because they make more.
  3. I know that your opinion will be shared by many on the board, but I disagree. The fact that the budget has been increased by $35M since 2000 might be interpreted as a sign that the team was underfunded in the past, for example. In arguing that, I'm not necessarily calling for new ownership, by the way. There are owners that could be worse for the team. But there are owners that would spend more on the team and do what it takes to put a better product on the field. Hendry certainly deserves more blame than the Trib, but the Trib shouldn't get off scot free. Their insistence on staying within a rigid budget has been well documented. As you point out, giving Hendry an extension is definitely their fault. Why in the world would they give him an extension before the season began? What did he do this offseason (or the past season, for that matter) that merited an extension? If the Trib had waited until the end of 2006 before making a decision on whether to keep him on or not, who would be competing with the Cubs for his services?
  4. I think people were excited about Dusty because he wasn't Don Baylor. How many of us actually watched San Fran much during the regular season? We knew they were a good team and assumed Dusty had something to do with it. He's incompetent. As for Hendry, I really believed in him for a while. But I'm now convinced that either he doesn't have a plan or the plan he has is a terrible plan. And let's not leave ownership out of the picture either. It's well-known among baseball people that the Cubs hold Hendry to a very strict budget. It's his fault that he spends so much on bench players, but if he had the flexibility of Minaya, Theo, etc then we might one day be players in the free agent market.
  5. Amen. But I know why we do it. It leaves some hope. If the problem is a lack of heart, then maybe someone can "light a fire under them" and all of a sudden they'll start playing better. If we see the problem as lack of talent, what hope do we have?
  6. Great article. Very articulate and informative.
  7. Mazzone went to Baltimore because of a pre-existing relationship. He actually wants to manage.
  8. We're saving up our runs for later in the year. Don't worry, dude.
  9. At least with Pierre we don't have to worry about him overthrowing the cutoff man.
  10. Thom B says no one expected the Reds to be first or the Dbacks to be first at the beginning of May. You know, Thom, people usually don't care about who's in first at the beginning of May. October, of course, is a different story.
  11. Murton does his best Dubois imitation in left, Jackson into second safely.
  12. Is Bynum using Jacque's bat. Seriously. It's that weird bright red bat.
  13. Jones just gave Murton the "I'm going to stray off first base and get picked off" sign.
  14. I really wonder the same thing. Really. I could understand Burnitz last year. There wasn't anyone else available, and it was only one year. But Jones for 3?
  15. Last night Brenneman said Z was overrated because he hasn't won 20 games. Now he's talking about Wood being overrated because he hasn't won 20 games.
  16. Aramis singles. His hit tells us that he is going to start trying harder at the plate and will now carry the team on his shoulders and be a leader in the clubhouse. :D
  17. Billy Williams is in the crowd. A friend of mine who's a Cubs fan got him to sign a bat for my newborn son back in August. I will, of course, forever like Billy Williams.
  18. The Marlins have scored 110 runs after 25 games. Cubs have scored 112 after 26. I like young and bad better than old and bad, too.
  19. Is anyone monitoring Fred's postcount? We don't want him to go more than 120 tonight and risk injury.
