  1. Don't my Cubs history as well as I should I guess. What do you mean?
  2. I don't think Reagan is on the scale of an all time great with the franchise, maybe so though. Eck doesn't qualify for the pre-reqs I set out, which were 150 appearances with the Cubs.
  3. Couldn't find any other relievers who would probably be considered among the greatest of the franchise. Lee Smith: 458 games, 681 IP, 644 K's, 180 saves, 2.92 ERA, 1.255 WHIP, 134 ERA+ Bruce Sutter: 300 games, 493 IP, 494 K's, 133 saves, 2.41 ERA, 1.057 WHIP, 186 ERA+
  4. Yes, he has him ranked slightly higher. He updated the book following the 1999 season, so my guess is that he'd have Grace at or near where Chance is if he were to update it right now.
  5. Sorry Luis Salazar fans, it's just these three: Stan Hack: 1938 games, .301/.394/.397, 2193 hits, 57 HR, 363 2B, 81 3B, 642 RBI, 1239 runs, 119 OPS+, 1136 runs created Aramis Ramirez: 620 games, .301/.357/.557, 704 hits, 146 HR, 142 2B, 10 3B, 454 RBI, 367 runs, 129 OPS+, 449 runs created Ron Santo: 2126 games, .279/.366/.472, 2171 hits, 337 HR, 353 2B, 63 3B, 1290 RBI, 1109 runs, 127 OPS+, 1348 runs created
  6. He really wasn't all that impressive of a baseball player, just a great manager and leader. .296/.394/.394 OPS+... 135 Yes, when he actually played he was very good. He just didn't put up the type of numbers that would make him an all time great for the franchise. From Bill James "Baseball Abstract" about Chance (Bill James' Baseball Abstract, pg. 441): While Ive got the book out, I may as well quote James' takes on the other guys, except Lee. Mark Grace (Bill James' Baseball Abstract, pg. 444): Phil Cavarretta (Bill James' Baseball Abstract, pg. 453):
  7. He really wasn't all that impressive of a baseball player, just a great manager and leader. .296/.394/.394
  8. I would say Cap Anson definitely deserves a spot... Original requirements didn't include players pre-20th century, so Anson is out.
  9. He was moved there for age. Banks at first is what I'd call a "circumstantial" first baseman. His stats at SS and at 1B are night and day. SS: .291/.361/.577, 138 OPS+ 1B: .260/.308/.448, 85 OPS+
  10. Pretty much what I figured, and also convenient choices as regards positioning of our all-star team. Billy in left, Hack in center, and Sosa in right.
  11. Phil Cavaretta: 1953 games, .292/.371/.416, 1927 hits, 92 HR, 341 2B, 99 3B, 896 RBI, 968 runs, 118 OPS+, 1014 runs created Mark Grace: 1910 games, .308/.386/.445, 2201 hits, 148 HR, 456 2B, 43 3B, 1004 RBI, 1057 runs, 122 OPS+, 1259 runs created Derrek Lee: 519 games, .308/.389/.552, 597 hits, 108 HR, 141 2B, 5 3B, 317 RBI, 331 runs, 138 OPS+, 420 runs created
  12. Updated the stats in the first post.
  13. Vote for 3 Kiki Cuyler: 949 games, .325/.391/.485, 69 HR, 602 RBI, 665 Runs, 127 OPS+, 690 runs created Andre Dawson: 867 games, .285/.326/.507, 174 HR, 587 RBI, 431 Runs, 125 OPS+, 521 runs created Bill Nicholson: 1349 games, .270/.368/.471, 205 HR, 833 RBI, 738 Runs, 136 OPS+, 835 runs created Andy Pafko: 960 games, .294/.362/.468, 126 HR, 554 RBI, 486 Runs, 126 OPS+, 596 runs created Sammy Sosa: 1811 games, .284/.358/.569, 545 HR, 1414 RBI, 1245 Runs, 139 OPS+, 1424 runs created Billy Williams: 2213 games, .296/.364/.503, 392 HR, 1353 RBI, 1306 Runs, 135 OPS+, 1552 runs created Hack Wilson: 700 games, .322/.412/.590, 190 HR, 769 RBI, 652 Runs, 155 OPS+, 767 runs created
  14. Ya, they could dig up Hank Greenberg too and have Crawford and Baldelli carry him around like Weekend at Bernies.
  15. Agreed, I think it should be between Three Finger Brown and Fergie.
  16. I'd like for the Saints to draft Curtis Loftin. He looks like a super stud at MIKE.
  17. Riot
  18. I don't have time to figure out their individual ERA's, WHIP's, etc., JUST as Cubs. baseball reference will give you all that I've yet to find somewhere on BR that splits up your total stats by each team you played for. I'd like it if there were.
  19. I don't have time to figure out their individual ERA's, WHIP's, etc., JUST as Cubs.
  20. Sorry, should have made this clear at the beginning. This is referring to their career, in sum, as a Cub.
  21. Vance, seriously, were you just so anxious to make this tired joke that you skipped over this part: I guess no matter how hard you try you can't "Merker/Soto-proof" a thread.
  22. Ferguson Jenkins: 347 GS, 167-132, 3.20 ERA, 1.123 WHIP, 2038 K's, 29 SHO, 119 ERA+ Greg Maddux: 298 GS, 133-112, 3.68 ERA, 1.245 WHIP, 1305 K's, 14 SHO, 111 ERA+ Mordecai Brown: 241 GS, 188-86, 1.80 ERA, 0.998 WHIP, 1043 K's, 48 SHO, 153 ERA+ Hippo Vaughn: 270 GS, 151-105, 2.33 ERA, 1.169 WHIP, 1138 K's, 35 SHO, 126 ERA+ Grover Cleveland Alexander: 223 GS, 128-83, 2.84 ERA, 1.161 WHIP, 614 K's, 24 SHO, 131 ERA+
  23. OK, so I'm going to start this series of polls which can get us to narrow down a Cubs All-Star team of all time (not counting pre-20th century). The requirements (off the top of my head) are 500 games played (with the Cubs) for position players, 150 games started for starters, and 150 appearances for relievers (so no Mercker, GEOVANY SOTO, Neifury, or Macias). We'll have an A and a B team with the B team consisting of those with the second most votes. Before I start the polling I'd like to see what the consensus is of maybe the top 4 or 5 at each position for the Cubs that will be nominated. Please help me out if I miss anyone. These are in no order. SP: Ferguson Jenkins Greg Maddux Mordecai Brown Hippo Vaughn Grover Cleveland Alexander RP: Bruce Sutter Lee Smith Randy Myers ?? C: Gabby Hartnett (I don't think this one is much of a contest, probably no use in even having a poll.) Jody Davis 1B: Mark Grace Phil Cavarretta Frank Chance Derrek Lee Charlie Grimm 2B: Ryne Sandberg Glen Beckert Johnny Evers Billy Herman 3B: Ron Santo Aramis Ramirez Stan Hack SS: Ernie Banks (not sure there should even be a poll on this one either) Joe Tinker Don Kessinger OF:(top 3) Billy Williams Kiki Cuyler Hack Wilson Sammy Sosa Bill Nicholson Frank Schulte Andre Dawson Andy Pafko Hank Sauer
  24. have you been to shea stadium, riverfront stadium or veterans' stadium? now those were a disgrace to baseball. OMG yes. Just dreadfully boring baseball parks. Aside from the neatness factor of being in a giant dome, the Astrodome was pretty terrible as well.
  25. Understatement of the millennium.
