  1. You don't do it to appease fans, you do it to put the best baseball team possible on the field in 2012. Also, considering how important fan based revenues are to the business plan, you probably should at least try to keep them happy. The fans loved the Soriano signing
  2. NO THE CUBS DO NOT HAVE A LOT OF WASTED MONEY ALREADY. ESPECIALLY IN THE NEXT [expletive] FEW YEARS That may be so, but spending money just because you have it to appease fans this year is not a good idea. THAT IS WHAT THE LAST REGIME WOULD HAVE DONE. I do not know if Darvish would have been a good long term investment, but I still trust the new regime to make good decisions to build a consistent winner and I do not need them to prove it by making a couple of big free agent splashes this year.
  3. I think the Cubs are a big market team and should act as such, but I am also against just spending money because of that reason. The Cubs probably need to be careful in the free agency market in the next few years because they already have a lot of wasted money and not much immediate help coming from the system.
  4. I have never watched one, but I think it is good that the league is showing some transparency in their decision making process.
  5. I think Obama v Gingrich would be some interesting debates.
  6. maybe that is his way of asking you out on a date
  7. I am glad I read the link before I posted. I was going to say that he is probably not as good as Willingham who only got 2/14 from the Twins.
  8. so I do not follow the NFL that much. I do listen to the Score some in the car and watch some Bears football on Sundays. Until he got arrested I had never heard of Sam Hurd.
  9. This is just perception but I am in my mid 40s and it seems that hitting in both football and hockey is higher on the body than it used to be. This is more football oriented but I have heard ex coaches and players defend Harrison's hit on McCoy as a good football play. I am not sure when it became a good football play to hit above the waist/stomach without wrapping your arms, but I am almost positive even 10 yrs ago no one would have called it a good tackle. In hockey, the check is first and foremost used to knock someone off the puck. I think a good hit at the shoulders is effective, but it is also easier to juke around. I am sure I was taught to hit hips/chest into the body with stick on the ice. The second motive is to wear an opponent down. I think there is no doubt finishing good body checks is much more effective than shoulder and up hits....unless you actually knock someone senseless.
  10. Versus/NBC Sports also has an hour long post game show after every game. Short of having the NHL Network(which I do not have,) it probably is the best thing going on giving a quick shot at the league overall. I like Doc.
  11. And they spent half the time talking about how hockey fans complain about a lack of coverage on ESPN. So meta. Point taken. It's just a shame that they couldn't put hockey on at least one of their networks. Even the Ocho would be better than the sparse coverage on VS. Disagree. NHL chose NBC/Versus precisely because being shown on ESPN 2 only is crap. NBC Sports is making a large investment in the future and NHL is along for the ride with only SNF as real competition. I agree. NHL/Versus started slow but they have really done a great job with NHL that last couple of years. I am super glad that they kept broadcasting rights over ESPN. The next thing I wish they would start doing is have a double header night so they could show a west coast game at least once a week.
  12. You could have Todd Bertuzzi and Tomas Holmstrom. Trust me, we'd take Holmstrom. Even Bertuzzi would be a big step up, but I don't think I'd be able to stand him wearing the Indian. I actually wish Bertuzzi was still the surly dirty player he was when he was in Vancouver. I think he almost goes out of his way sometimes to not be a physical player. Almost like he is scared that something bad will happen again. I also know that Holmstrom and Bertuzzi are a lot better than Scott, but having both of those guys playing forward is bad. At least one of them has to play in the top 6 and both are painfully slow. So 2 lines have an anchor on them. I would love to have just Holmstrom play 4th line minutes and on the PP.
  13. You could have Todd Bertuzzi and Tomas Holmstrom.
  14. That ought to put some jump in their lineup.
  15. If we have not learned anything, it is that college coaching has low ethical standards
  16. I am actually very concerned that the Cards end up getting him for a contract similar to ARams. I know it would be a gamble to be relying on Frucal, Holliday, Berkman and Beltran. But if all 3 could stay healthy for just one year.....crap!!!
  17. What does that mean, exctly? preliminary hearing is basically just a hearing to make sure the prosecution has enough evidence to go to trial.
  18. can all B2B trade proposal threads be moved to fantasy sports?
  19. my brother has lived in the Bay area since the late 80s, so I was more aware of Dusty's weaknesses than I probably normally would. I also figure that his weaknesses would not be good with what the Cubs had in place at the time. I put 2 but may have been a little more optimistic. Funny that by July of 03 I was convinced that he was a bad hire and making the playoffs didn't change my mind.
  20. I like Ben Smith but I thought he was over hyped after having a couple of good games in the playoffs last year. He will be a solid 3rd liner down the road. I wonder if they need Bickell to get some playing time to showcase for a trade?
  21. I certainly do not prefer Loney to Fielder, I said if we don't or can't sign Fielder. That being said it wouldnt surprise me if by year five or six of a possible Fielder contract that Loney would be more productive. Loney very well could be a Mark Grace type player for us. Almost identical, actually and thats with no more development. Hes not a difference maker or anything, but is pretty useful. his home/away splits have been rather equal the last couple of years and not good. I do not see that much upside in Loney. Either way we are much better off signing a guy who has some upside than a decent veteran, even if the division is down. It doesnt matter if you think that guy is Loney, Barton or someone else. Im certainly not saying Loney would be dream or anything. I would rather gamble on LaHair. I agree with your sentiment though, I just do not agree with Loney.

  23. I think Loney has the perfect skill set for the Cards
  24. Well yeah, we've gotten much worse so far this offseason, but I thought your comment about the Reds being "quite a bit better" than the Cubs last season was pertaining to last season only. Going into next season, the Cubs have much more upside to get better. We have the payroll to really improve ourselves with signings such as Prince, Darvish, etc. The Reds don't. As long as management doesn't buy into the idea that we need a 3-5 year rebuilding process, there's no reason the Reds should be much, if any, better than us next year. I think the Reds will be better this year because younger players may improve and they will probably pick up some games from the Cards, Brewers, Astros and Pirates. Back to my original point, I would not do anything just because the division is perceived to be bad this year. I guess the bottom line is I wouldn't overpay for Fielder, Darvish or anyone just because the division is bad. If the Cubs can get a deal on these players that they are comfortable with long term, then yes make the deal.
  25. The Reds were 79-83, the Cubs were 71-91 last season. And the Reds didn't have the injury problems the Cubs did. The Reds can certainly be contenders in the division next year, but I wouldn't say they're "much closer" to contention than the Cubs, nor were they quite a bit better than the Cubs last season. Cubs are also currently without two of their best offensive players from last year.
