  1. I talked to my dad the Tigers fan today. He wasnt that excited about this trade. He thought they gave away too much. He thinks that the Tigers are also going to make a move to get a LH power hitting OFer, who wouldnt block Maybin when Maybin is ready. Geoff Jenkins was who he was thinking.
  2. MACHADO??? how could i forget? the question was "top 10 Cubs catchers since 1992", right? I was wondering why there was no Barry Foote and George Mitterwald
  3. AMEN. One thing that bothers me about this board, the skepticism level is practically zero. If someone puts up a good year, that's it, it's accepted at face value. There are some points others have made that I disagree with. - First of all, Jurrjens and Gorkys absolutely smokes Marshall and EPatt. I can't believe anyone said they were at all comparable. Pretty much every GM but one would take Jurrjens in two seconds over Marshall, that one dissenting GM being Jim Hendry. - This idea that Dave Dombrowski is just the bees' knees because of this. Hey, I'd like to have him as our GM. But I think the Braves are going to walk away from this deal clear winners, like they usually do. I didn't like the Gary Sheffield trade. Look at what the Yankees gave up for Abreu (and Lidle). They gave up squat. Look at what the Tigers gave up Sheffield. A ton, and he's old, injury prone, and look at his OPS, not that great. - Renteria is going to go back to his old .735 OPS self, and then we'll see how smart the Tigers are. I thank the Tigers for removing this temptation from Hendry. And then how much of an offensive upgrade will it be? But all of this misses the main point - the Tigers have the chips to do trades like this, we don't. They're giving away Humberto Sanchez (what that his name? Something like that, I'm in a hurry), Kevin Whelan, Jair Jurrjens because they have Andrew Miller and Rick Porcello. They can give away Gorkys with Curtis Granderson and Cameron Maybin in that outfield. Just like the Braves could trade their overrated prospects for Teixeira and not be sunk. We don't have the chips or the depth. This is why I like Dombrowski. He knows how to draft and develop talent. He did it in Montreal and Florida and now has taken the worst system in all of baseball and made it very productive in 5 years. When you have a system that is producing talent, it make every other aspect of your team that much better. I agree that some of his moves are questionable. Sanchez has a hurt arm though. Maybe development people predicted this would happen, So Drombrowski moved him while he could. Bottom line is he took a bad team that had a bad system that wasnt producing talent and has made them a good team that is producing talent from their minor league system. He also was a good GM in other places with smaller payrolls. I wish he was the Cubs GM.
  4. Torre seems like a manager that is willing to put the young guys out there if they deserve the shot. I havent followed the Yankees any closer than what I see on ESPN.
  5. Cochrane, Hartnett, Bench, Fisk, Berra, Dickey, Campenella, Piazza, Munson and Porter.
  6. Have I ever mentioned that I wish Dave Drombrowski was the Cubs GM.
  7. I watched the Pitt/Navy game about a month ago. Navy almost won. I dont think that ND is much better than Pitt.
  8. I dont think the Cubs have enough to get Bedard. I am sure someone else with more talent is going to outbid the Cubs.
  9. Detroit San Diego Los Angeles Toronto Seattle Atlanta NY Mets Minnesota I would have a hard time saying the Cubs would beat any of these teams in a 7 game series. Toronto???? LA???? Atlanta????? Minnesota???? Mets after that collapse???? I think any of these teams would have won the NL central. Who wins a 7 games series can be a crap shot.
  10. Detroit San Diego Los Angelas Toronto Seatle Atlanta NY Mets Minnesota I would have a hard time saying the Cubs would beat any of these teams in a 7 game series.
  11. A team with a losing record against an unbeaten team, to me, is always a mismatch. But I'll move it if more people agree with you. I have to agree with Meph. Nebraska isn't that good, but Kansas also isn't nearly as good as their rating right now. I agree also. Of course this just about guarantees that Kansas wins 38-9
  12. We all know that the SEC should have 8 of the top 10, what is wrong with these voters!!! Heck there scheduling is so powerful they should get to play all div III schools non-conference. It still would be stronger than the Big Twelve.
  13. No doubt that Jim Brown was a better NFL player than a college player, but he was still a great in college. His stats were a bit low on the counting side, but there's a few reasons for that. One obviously being that Syracuse only played 8 games a season then. Another is that Brown played multiple positions. He was the team kicker and one of the top defensive players(I forget if he was CB, S, or LB). I'm pretty sure he played on the offensive line too when he wasn't running, and did it well. If I remember right there was some politics about the Heisman that year and him finishing only 5th, but I'm going off memory of reading about it so I can't say that as a fact. Elway was certainly deserving of being on the list, I just feel Brown not being at least in the top 10, if not the top 5 is a joke. I think its quite possible to put every BYU QB from the 80s on the list if Elway made it. I dont doubt his great numbers but the top 25 players of all time should have winning as a major category. Especially QB. I think Elways NFL career is what is swaying him into being number 15. If he had a David Klingler career he would be on this list? I am guessing no.
  14. So I am pretty sure that John Elway never even went to a bowl game, yet somehow he is the 15th greatest college player ever!!!!
  15. If you would have told me that Michigan St would be 5-4 right now before the season I would have been happy. Somehow I am very disappointed with them.
  16. Not only did the Wings roll the Sharks tonight. They extended Draper for about 1.5 per. Good signing. I know he is 36, but is pretty much as good now as he was when he was 23 and you cant complain about the money.
  17. Josh Beckett, for my money. And little of it has to do with wearing us out in '03. He's just a self-important jerk. Kinda reminds me of a young Curt Shilling  That said, what is your problem with old, grizzled Curt Shilling? Aside from his bloody-sock lore and endearment to Boston fans everywhere, I don't really mind him. People hate him because hes an ardent NeoCon. I really dont know much about his politics. I started disliking him when he was in the World Series with the Phillies. It has only gone down hill since.
  18. He is easily my least favorite player in MLB. I think he is good and would get over it. I agree we probably dont have the money to get it done though.
  19. What a liar. Right, Dusty. It was Hendry's idea to go out and get Neifi Perez, Lenny Harris, Tom Goodwin, etc. I really really hate Dusty Baker. I have no problem thinking that Hendry was just as responsible for these moves. Garciaparra was hurt so they brought in Neifi as an emergency. He actually was good for a couple of weeks. So Hendry gave him a ridiculous 2 yr contract on 2 weeks worth of production AFTER THE GIANTS CUT HIS LARGE REAR for sucking at an extreme level. I dont care how much your manager wants a guy, these are the reasons the Manager and GM are seperate jobs.
  20. I agree with both of your posts. I still think the thing that will do more to wreck the BCS is if OSU, BC, Kansas all stay undefeated
  21. Apparently so. there was an easy hold call on the one where he threw the game-winning td too. That's the thing about Matt Ryan, he's very mobile and throws really well on the run, but he runs around so much that his offensive line almost has to hold. I guess if the refs are blind or don't like calling holding, then it works out okay, but if you run into a crew that calls the game by the book, it's gonna be trouble. I am not sure that last play was holding. I seen it a few times since this post and was looking real hard. It easily could have been the BC offensive lineman just letting the VT dlinemen use his own momentum to take him down. He doesnt have an arm around him and didnt seem to be grabbing him. Its hard to tell. I should record it and go over it a couple of times. I assume that I am looking at what you saw. I didnt see anything else that was close to obvious.
  22. Just keep watching. The Blues have a good future. They also have a strong following. If you find a good Blues board you could probably just read and get a lot of info.
  23. I wish him well. I always liked him as a player. I didnt want him at his age and health last year. Hopefully he can put together a decent year next year with someon.
  24. Awesome rotation, no doubt, but what does your outfield look like in this scenario? Soriano/ A. Jones/ J. Jones 30 mil for ARod or 20 mil for Johan + 10 for A Jones? Again, I'm not saying either scenario is likely, just trying to illustrate how much more formidable we are with another frontline starter. That rotation with this lineup? Soriano DeRosa Lee ARam A. Jones Soto J. Jones Cedeno/Theriot and I don't see how we lose 70 games. Prior comes back and its lol. Come playoff time, who is gonna beat that 1-2-3? A Jones wont be coming for $10 million. I heard the Dodgers are going to offer Kemp and Kershaw for Santana. That pretty much would trump your proposed offer. I would be all for trading for Santana, but it looks unrealistic.
  25. For those of you who are questioning the supiority of the SEC. What are you thinking? They are better than the NFC and almost as good as the AFC. I know there is only 1 good non-conference win to support this evidence. They have no good non-conference road wins. But because ESPN and their fans say its so, it is. When the Big Ten beats them in the Citris Bowl and Outback Steak bowl, those games wont count because its our 2nd best against there almost 2nd best or something. This is a losing arguement. The SEC is far and away better and just accept that.
