    So, somewhere between Matt Williams and Ian Stewart? Are they listing Almora as somewhere between Griffey Jr and Doug Dascenzo?

    Serious question: Is there any merit to the "building a culture of winning" talk? Does it matter for the players to have some success in terms of looking long term? I do get the feeling that when Javy comes up he isn't going to care about any of that [expletive]. He's just gonna do whatever the [expletive] he wants.

    If we pick up another starter worth a damn, I'll say 80 wins. There, I said it.

    It's not the new regime's brilliant guidance. It's the old regime's complete ineptitude and their practice of giving hitters advice centered around being aggressive and not taking walks. I hate saying "this" but THIS x 1000. How many potentially great hitters were completely fucked over by this nonsense? And how many hitters were absolutely befuddled by the 180 degree turn in philosophy? Castro probably doesn't even like baseball by this point.

    If Freese comes back to Earth it will be in Anaheim, not St. Louis. I am aware of that. I was just stating that many Cardinals could easily come back to Earth next season, much the way Freese did last year.

    Not to mention that everything went right for the Cardinals last year, plus some of their guys may come back to Earth a little, ala David Freese.

    See, as much as I don't want to believe this, I keep coming back to this thought over and over. I really think this is a part of it. i think they feel like if they can't go all in on spending, it's either all in or all out. Sorta where I fall. Of course they wouldn't prefer this way, but given the hand they've been dealt they see this as a baseball genius challenge in a way.

    There is a way that this team could hover around .500 for awhile. Sure there's a lot of "ifs" but it is not impossible. How many leads did the bullpen blow early last season, spoiling quality starts? This season, the bullpen goes from a weakness to a strength. Theo has said he's going after another starter. Rizzo and Castro are bound to rebound, at least somewhat. Let's say Olt becomes serviceable, or at least a threat at the plate. We manage to stay around .500 and then KB and/or Javy gets called up and suddenly we could have a very interesting lineup. It's not that far fetched. Unlikely, sure.

    See, as much as I don't want to believe this, I keep coming back to this thought over and over. I really think this is a part of it.

    You don't see how the presence of absence of an MLB pitcher better than any one in our organization, in the heart of his prime, changes the short-term outlook of our chances? Or do you not think the short-term outlook of our chances changes how the front office behaves in any given offseason? I'm not sure where the hang-up is here. First of all, I don't think any of us know with certainty that he would be better than anyone in our organization, not by a long shot. We had hoped so, but there are plenty of red flags. I didn't say that it had no effect on our short term chances. I just think that 2015 is the stated breakthrough year, and Tanaka would have probably made us better next year but not changed the FO mindset for when we are "going for it".

    The only part of this where I may differ is the bold part. I don't agree with the "entrenched" part. I think (hope) we add meaningful parts by this time next year. It sucks that we may well be sellers again at the ASB, but I think (hope) this is the last one.

    All of a sudden? We are in the process right now of finishing up an entire offseason of doing just that. Yes, and I don't care for it either, but it's been clear since Day One that this FO has taken the longview to rebuilding the franchise, and the fruits of the farm are now getting close enough to A) be evaluated to see if they can help the club or B) be extremely valuable chips to obtain big league talent. If we had won on Tanaka and he was as advertised, then this conversation wouldn't be taking place. I just don't see how losing out on him changes the entire narrative on how we do business for the next 13 months.

    These are enormous leaps that seem to be getting made over and over again in the last several pages. There's an excellent chance that a few of these prospects we've been obsessively following the last couple of years are out of here before opening day of 2015. I also am pissed we didn't get Tanaka (albeit very curious to see how this works out for the Yankees), but the narrative that this all of a sudden means that we sit on our hands now and wait for the farm to get here doesn't hold water with me.

    Years ago I was roommates with a Saintsation, who at one point was one of the Seagals. They don't make [expletive]. If they do make any money, it's from promotional things outside of actually dancing during games. It's all about exposure, not what they make off the team.

    That's a really good hire by Detroit. Carmichael has gotten way too much credit, but Lombardi is a great coach.

    Or he will come here and be terrible. :( I could live with that a hell of a lot easier. Which is funny, because him going elsewhere and being good is a better alternative for the Cubs than him coming here and being hurt or crappy. Yeah, was thinking the same.
