yeah but everyone assumes that some of those guys are going to be moving elsewhere. it's very possible that they all stay in the place they were drafted, then you're up crap creek without a paddle because you've shed a lot of salary and there's nobody out there to sign. Yeah, well the Bulls know nothing about this strategy ever failing. ... Yeah, the plan of "save as much money for the big free agent year, and then land a Tracy McGrady" worked marvelously back in...what was it, 2001?

According to WA82 (wins added per 82 games), Noah has been the second biggest contributor on the Bulls this year, behind Smith. WA82: 1. Joe Smith 0.89; 2. Joakim Noah 0.75; 3. Aaron Gray 0.35; 4. Tyrus Thomas 0.24; 5. Luol Deng 0.20; 6. Kirk Hinrich -0.14; 7. Demetris Nichols -0.21; 8. Andres Nocioni -0.22; 9. Adrian Griffin -0.36; 10. Ben Gordon -0.58; 11. Thomas Gardner -0.74; 12. Thabo Sefolosha -1.39; 13. Ben Wallace -2.04; 14. Chris Duhon -2.44
  3. Maybe they could just eliminate that right field wall as the stadium gimmick, and just end the outfield at the water. In the water is a HR.
  4. I would like to see Archuleta cut. Isn't Arch a huge cap hit though if he's cut? Maybe the Bears think it'd be more worth it to keep him on since they'd need the cap room more than the roster spot. He could play some on special teams, or something.
  5. True, not my fault all that happened while I was at lunch. I had the Deron Williams thing all queued up and ready to go. :P
  6. Maybe if your posts didn't read like this 95% of the time anyone wants to talk basketball, people would be more apt to discussion.
  7. After the mistake has been made, the best thing anyone can do about it is to be honest about it, admit what was done, and say it was wrong. That's the kind of thing that can discourage future use, as opposed to falsely denying everything to the bitter end until someone else proves you wrong.
  8. no Then I will ask again. Why does a bullet stop (using the theory of only minimal wind resistence as the slowing force)? Why is a javelin not thrown more on a line? Please explain how gravity does not have an effect on the slowing process. Gravity pulls you towards the Earth. Hitting the Earth stops you, not gravity. Gravity is pulling you straight down, towards the center of the Earth. It in no way affects your momentum perpendicular to the surface (forward). Air resistance slows you down in this direction, not gravity. Again, a force pulling down doesn't slow the forward progress of an item in air? Only wind resistance slows the object? I would think these two factors worked in combination to slow items. Well I studied Genetics and wasn't that great at Physics, but I will have to respectfully disagree. Gravity does not affect your horizontal velocity in the slightest. Wind resistance, friction and drag do. Javelins, bullets, and other things stop because they hit something. If there is nothing horizontal in the way, it hits the ground. The ground happens to have a larger friction coefficient than the air.
  9. Actually, no, I get nothing out of that link. It says "Image not found". Try this link instead.
  10. I see the Cubs as a good team in a terrible division, so they might end up being the 3rd or 4th best NL team, but finish with the best record anyway.
  11. I don't mean to sound like a homer, but Illinois actually has a decent chance to win out. Their remaining games are home vs. MSU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and road vs. Iowa, Michigan, Penn State. Compared to their schedule thus far (@MSU, @Wisc, 2 vs IU, 2 vs. PU, 2 vs. OSU, @Minn, Mich, NU, PSU), that seems significantly easier. Granted, they'll likely lose half those by less than 10 points, just because of their Memphis-like FT shooting.
  12. Up-to-date Pomeroy ratings: http://kenpom.com/rate.php Check out which two teams stick out like sore thumbs in that rating.
  13. The mathematical reason that SF and SH don't cancel or factor out of the equation is that they are added into the numerator and denominator, not multiplied. The logical reason... The bottom of the equation (SF+SH+BB+HBP+SB+CS+AB) is just a fancy way of factoring in all plate appearances, and including all stolen base attempts. The top half of the equation is measuring the value of each possible outcome for those plate appearances/stolen base attempts. Negative outcomes (strikeout, hit-out, caught stealing) have no value, so they don't have a factor in the top half. EDIT: It could be argued that hitting into a double play has a negative value, since it is a worse than zero effect, but it simply isn't factored into the EqA equation.
  14. Lost in the IU-UI talk... Illinois won. By 24. At Minnesota. Where did that come from?
  15. I believe this is the correct order.
  16. Always seemed too convenient for the constant to normalize the data to be 5 exactly. Makes more sense that it isn't all the time. Still don't like the way park effects are factored in, since in any player's home park, 90% of the league is facing the home team's pitching staff, which can throw off park averages. However, I'm not sure there's a better way to do it, since factoring in multiple years of home park effects is also flawed if the home park is altered in any way.
  17. Maybe Hendry wouldn't do the Roberts deal without getting an innings-eater in return...
  18. that's like asking "if two people own the same car but one has 2 speeding tickets and the other doesn't, which is more likely to speed?" more like "if two people own the same car but one has two speeding tickets, which one is more likely to violently murder his entire family?" Or even "If two people own the same car but one has a speeding ticket, which one is more likely to use illegal drugs?"
  19. Psh, that's nothing. Apparently I'm a Nazi. I didn't realize there were people with that low a level of self-esteem. I mostly just feel sorry for them.
  20. Blanco likely drags down the "duo" in their eyes, but if Soto plays up to his projections, the Cubs could have the 2nd or 3rd best production in the NL from the C position.
  21. How is Jeff Francoeur not a good outfielder? I'll let the FJM guys handle this one with a glossary entry: OBP (On-Base Percentage) 1. Read Moneyball. 2. OBP is the difference between Kevin Youkilis and Jeff Francoeur. 3. It's also the reason Adam Dunn is vastly underrated. 4. Very simply, OBP is a way to tell how good someone is at not making outs. It’s the total number of times a guy gets on base without being responsible for making an out (except for reaching on errors), divided by his plate appearances -- which are simply times a guy comes up to the plate and tries not to make an out. See why it’s valuable? (Plate appearances in this case are defined as At Bats + Walks + Sacrifice Flies.)

So, with last night's win against Golden State, the Bulls actually vaulted into the 8 spot in the East. No, really.
  23. just like last year, right? Indeed, just like last year. A good example of why projections are merely that.
  24. More the opposite, really. :) Joe Morgan was a fantastic player, but the man truly doesn't understand why.
  25. Here's how I see it: Contenders - Cubs, Brewers Competitive - Reds, Astros Disaster - Cards, Pirates This doesn't mean of course that the division will finish in that order, just that this would be the most likely outcome, with basically three "tiers" of teams. The only prohibitive favorite of any NL division would be the Mets.
