  1. I happen to think the ACC is clearly the best conference this year, but mostly because there are zero bad teams and 3-4 really good teams (BE has 5 bad teams and 3-4 really good teams, BT has 1 bad team and 1 really good team, Pac-10 has 1 bad team and 0 really good teams, B12 has 3 bad teams and 2-3 really good teams, SEC has 14 bad teams and 0 really good teams). I don't really see a great middle team. If anything, I'd say VT or BC, but they're both crawling to the finish. And I'm only kidding about the SEC, but honestly I see more deserving teams out of the MWC than the SEC this year.
  2. Every day I feel more fortunate to be in a position where I really can't be laid off...I hope things pick up for you soon.
  3. Well, somebody has to. LSU has by far the best profile in the SEC, I think they're in no matter what happens here on out.
  4. Northwestern has never been in the tourney, the only major conference team that can say that. Honestly, I have NW above Kentucky and Florida right now.
  5. Just think, if Northwestern holds on at home against Purdue and Illinois, they're 10-7 in conference and likely in the tournament.
  6. Also, even if someone is initially in "Lock" status, if something absurd does happen to a lock that would/should alter their consideration (say, WVU loses at home to DePaul while losing their best 2 players to injury for the rest of the year, and then loses to DePaul again in the BE Tourney), we could always discuss and remove them later.
  7. After an opening Champ week night of 12 games and just one seed upset (in the Horizon...but Butler gets a double bye there so they don't play until Saturday anyway), the Atlantic Sun, Patriot, and Sun Belt leagues get their conference tournaments started tonight. Also, in the one league that doesn't have a tournament, the Ivy championship is going to come down to the last weekend, with Cornell one game up on Princeton, while Cornell hosts Princeton Saturday.
  8. There doesn't need to be 34 locks at this point. If you only see 21 locks, make 21 locks.
  9. I can understand taking on a failed or retired player as an analyst, because sometimes even if the physical gifts have abandoned a player they still get the mental part of the game. Failed GMs, though? They've basically failed at being an analyst for a team.
  10. That slides into the realm of how good a team is more so than what they've accomplished. Difficult to weigh both, but when we're actually ranking teams, I'll indicate who they are also, so people who want to can do additional research. Although I do like the anonymous team stuff to get a cross-section of opinion on a set of teams without individual biases clouding judgment.
  11. The more, the merrier. I find there are more interesting results when more people are involved. That way I don't personally influence the overall bracket too much. :)
  12. Yeah, those 4 teams, IMO, are pretty well locked into the tournament in the 4-5 seed area. The teams are Clemson, Washington, Illinois and Marquette. I made a point to try to get the most similar teams I could out of different conferences.
  13. I'm actually pretty interested to go see him pitch this year, considering the Bolts' home park is about 3 blocks from my house and tickets are 5 dollars.
  14. Conference tournaments start tonight for the Big South and OVC. I'll keep updating the first post with auto bids as they happen. And to start the discussion, take the following 4 teams: Team A: 22-6 record, 2-2 against the top 25, 5-4 against the top 50, no losses outside the top 100, 10-3 R/N record, 6-6 in the last 12, SOS 45 Team B: 22-7 record, 3-2 against the top 25, 7-6 against the top 50, 1 loss outside the top 100, 6-6 R/N record, 9-3 in the last 12, SOS 20 Team C: 23-7 record, 3-3 against the top 25, 8-6 against the top 50, no losses outside the top 100, 9-4 R/N record, 8-4 in the last 12, SOS 33 Team D: 23-6 record, 2-3 against the top 25, 7-4 against the top 50, 1 loss outside the top 100, 7-5 R/N record, 8-4 in the last 12, SOS 55 What order would you rank them in, without looking up the names of the schools? I think they're almost identical, but I'd probably go C-B-A-D. EDIT: A valuable piece of information I left out is that early in the year, team A won at team C. Still doesn't really sway me too much as I think overall team C's profile is better.
  15. I think its pretty clear from this quote that I wasnt happy with his performance hence the qualifier "as a pitcher." I dont see how that is remotely about his personality. well, then that's just dumb. over the course of 06-07 he was the best pitcher the cubs had and he was making like $300,000. it would have been better if you had said you didn't like his personality. i guess. i'm curious...what counts exactly are indicative of wilting under pressure? talk about an idiotic, cherry picked statistic. Hill has issued walks in 100% of 4-ball counts. Can't handle that kind of pressure.
  16. Just arguing. The next thing after Friday is going to be Monday (rank top 16 locks and top 16 potentials...the real committee does it in 4's, but we don't have that kind of dedicated time online).
  17. I think I miscounted relievers anyway. If they break camp with 12 pitchers, that would be the 5 starters+ Gregg, Marmol, Heilman, Vizcaino, Gaudin, Cotts/Stanton/Lefty, and 1 more. I guess Guzman could easily be that last guy, unless Shark dazzles his way through ST. The problem is, Gooz better be impressive, because we all know how fast Lou looses patience, especially when it comes to young pitchers, and if it comes down to it, I doubt he'll care that Gooz is a one time top prospect, and ship him off to wherever. That's not true. As long as the pitcher throws strikes, Lou has infinite patience to let that pitcher struggle to come up with a way to get hitters out, even if those outs are line shots to the wall.
  18. I think this is the 5th annual, actually... Anyway, it's that time of year again, and I thought it might work better to spread the process over 2 weeks than to try to cram everything in 3 days like we've done before. Last 3 years running we've been more accurate than the "experts", missing a single team each year. Anyone can participate in the committee, and to do so I require the following in a PM by the end of Friday (the 6th): 13 Committee members: Current "S-Curve" (36): Auto-bids (31): Under consideration (roughly in order of support):
  19. I suppose a new topic for this draft would be prudent. Does the draft order follow the same as the major league draft, with the snaking? If so, I guess that gives me the first selection. Also, what will the rules be for the actual 2009 amateur draftees? Wait until next year to draft them, or are they eligible come the first week of June?
  20. So...then how's the prospect draft going to work? Same order as major league draft, but without the trades? How many rounds? What about the 2009 draft prospects?
  21. I'd say the best value picks at this point are Maclin and Harvin. The only way Harvin makes sense, though, would be if you absolutely abhor everything Mizzou.
  22. As much as I want to see the Bears draft a lineman (offensive or defensive), if the draft goes like this one does, it's pretty much a disaster scenario for that line of thinking. At this point, I'd probably advise just going BPA and drafting Maclin. Of course, I'm not in charge anywhere. :)
  23. Is Josh Fields gets a starting 3B gig, I'll be able to at least field a complete team. lowered expectations
  24. On the one hand, MSU is playing really well and Illinois is only down 7. On the other hand, Illinois is playing well and is still down 7.
  25. oh no we're getting smoked by a very good kansas team at the phog what a big surprise. i wonder if illinois would score 20 at kansas. Sensitive much? I'm sure UI would score at least 35-40. But KU sure wouldn't get much more than 50-60. I fail to understand why people who are fans of other conferences don't realize that scores are low in the B10 because teams play defense, and not because players are inept at putting the ball in the basket. Scores are low in the B10 overall because every team plays at a slow, half-court pace. Scores can be especially low in the B10 because some of the teams are really good defensively. In terms of defensive efficiency, 10 of the 11 BT teams are in the top 100 nationally, 4 of which are in the top 25 (Illinois, Purdue, MSU, Minnesota). The top two defensive teams in the country are actually Memphis and Louisville.
