  1. 18-year-old unranked Melanie Oudin (OK, she's ranked #70...but unranked in the tournament) just upset #4 Elena Dementieva 5-7,6-4,6-3. With #1 Dinara Safina struggling mightily, and the #2/3 Williams sisters on the other half of the bracket, the other finals spot is pretty much wide open for the taking at this point on the women's side. Oudin's next opponent will likely be Maria Sharapova.
  2. Cubs WC chances? I'd say about 2%.
  3. I vote for http://www.michiganavemag.com/images/MA_SP09_100_NEW3.jpg
  4. U.S. Open first round underway, with Roddick and Federer winning easily yesterday.
  5. Hmm interesting? He was a starter for the Cardinals last year in the Super Bowl, and hes only 27. Now Im hoping for Branch to be released and the Bears to pick him up as well. Yeah, I'm intrigued by this also but wondering why he's available. I guess we'll find out. EDIT: I looked for some commentary on this in the Cleveland paper. There is reference to the fact that he got beat for a TD pass in the preseason game on Saturday, but that's it. Interesting. Remember that last year's Cardinals team was awful defensively for the entire year.
  6. I was going to say how fitting it was that so many fans dressed like babies.
  7. Looks to me like they are pretty well set - the only real race left is for top spot in the west (and 2nd in the east possibly but that isn't really important). Nice work with your team Kevin - goes to show you a bad team can be improved quickly. Thanks, I've been pretty fortunate this year with the trades I made. Every gamble I've made has paid off so far (got Bay/Jordan Zimmerman/11th pick (Roberts) for 1st pick (Beltran), got Lowrie/Masterson for Furcal, got Sandoval/Detwiler/Austin Jackson for Jordan Zimmerman, got Nelson Cruz/Vazquez for next year's 1st/Posey). I just wanted to make the team competitive this year, so at least I managed that. :)

Wow.. some of those numbers are not what I'd have expected! Yeah, it's pretty much a specific reason for the question of "How in the world is Kevin's team in first place?" Either that or it just says that you got your ass kicked really bad in one of your matchups, and otherwise, your team's defense has been really good. :) Heh, I have gotten my ass kicked 3 times this year by about 100. I have the only team in the league to score at least 200 points every week, though. :)

    Because I've been unable to get much accomplished at work, and this makes my team look good even more lucky, here's some meaningless stats based only on head-to-head games among the playoff teams: W L PF PA Behind Tootie 5 2 2083.5 1941.25 0 SABR 5 2 1726 1737.5 357.5 Sanitizers 4 3 1983 1424 100.5 TB 3 4 1771.75 1939.25 311.75 Alamo 2 4 1735.75 1779.25 347.75 NSBB 1 5 1653.75 1812.75 429.75

I'm pretty sure my team is the least scary playoff team...but I have grit in spades!

Heh, if only HFA meant something in RK. You say that, but somehow my team managed to go 10-1 at home and 3-6-1 on the road. :) (yes, I know it's still meaningless)

Picked up Macdougal and dropped Qualls because apparently Qualls injured himself recording the last out yesterday.

It's simplified if you win this week, Navin. Then you face Tim for sure. Hey, if you beat him by 60, you'd even finish second in the standings. :)
  15. I don't know McDaniels personally, of course, but he certainly comes off like kind of a pompous prick in interviews. I don't understand media pundits that put the whole Cutler trade on Cutler being a crybaby.
  16. At this point, I can't imagine the Chargers not winning the AFC West. Unless the whole division goes 4-12 or something.
  17. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/norman_chad/08/30/couch.slouch/index.html?eref=T1 BTW...this article is by Norman Chad, of WSoP announcer fame. I never thought I'd see a more poorly used stat than W-L for pitchers, but here we are.

Well, this is it. All that's left to decide is how the West is won: The Fighting Manginos at NC Cubs Severe Tooterstorms at The Eyes of Texas Galesburg Hand Sanitizers at Harrys Budcrew Quakers at Lynx Valenzuela's Screwballs at Tootielicious Northside Baseball at Alamo Stealth Saber Metrics at Fuzzy Logistics Tampa Bay Rays at Raw Dawgs
  19. If only Pie had shown some sort of history of slow starts when adjusting to new leagues...
  20. That leaves one last playoff spot to be determined by Jair Jurrjens.
  21. I'd really like to see Theriot moved out of the leadoff spot for Fukudome. Sure, the 5 spot becomes weak, but there are infinitely more scoring chances at the top of the order.
  22. Because they're not paid to provide insight, they're paid to make people read, even if they're angry readers. Best course of action would be to pay as little attention as possible to it.
  23. I think the Cubs have enough to worry about without being concerned about the Patrick Kane ordeal.
  24. If Cutler could back it up the Broncos would have been in the playoffs last year. Wait...you don't honestly believe that, do you?
  25. SF's lineup with Sandoval out is abysmal. I regret that trade now that Zimmermann had TJ. I regret nothing! :)
