  1. Dempster has given up an abnormally large number of hard-hit balls in his first two starts this year.
  2. Why are Willie Bloomquist and Chris Young so difficult for Cub pitchers to get out?
  3. RSL won the aggregate with Saprissa 3-2 in the CONCACAF Champions League semis, and so advance to the finals against the Monterrey/Cruz Azul winner. If RSL wins, they'd be the first MLS club to ever advance to the FIFA Club World Cup (6 times Mexico, 1 time Costa Rica).
  4. Interesting article on the effect of injuries on teams: http://www.basketballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1631 A couple take aways: - Milwaukee has been absolutely killed by injuries all year. - Boston has been killed by injuries too, but they did sign the O'Neals. - The Bulls have had very few games missed overall due to injuries, and the fewest injured players of any team in the NBA. However, when looking at quality over quantity, the Bulls have had a higher than average WARP drop due to injury (Still, no Milwaukee).
  5. I'd like to see Coleman start twice, Russell once next Tuesday, and then hopefully catch a rainout/snowout either in Colorado or in Wrigley against San Diego. Oh, and also that Cashner and Wells are fine in two weeks.
  6. Projected rotation schedule, assuming as much normal rest as possible for 1-2-3 and limiting starts for #4/#5, over the next 14 days: 4/6: Dempster 4/7: OFF 4/8: Zambrano 4/9: Garza 4/10: #4 (Coleman) 4/11: Dempster 4/12: #5 4/13: Zambrano 4/14: OFF 4/15: Garza 4/16: Dempster 4/17: #4 (Coleman) 4/18: Zambrano 4/19: #5 4/20: Garza 4/21: OFF So, assuming Wells and Cashner are out the minimum 15 days, the Cubs would need to use Coleman twice and a starter other than Coleman twice, or use Garza on short rest on the 19th and use Wells on the 20th, the first day he'd be eligible to come off the DL.
  7. I'm a huge fan of caution in this situation, early in the year without much in the way of grandiose expectations. Not saying they might as well just forfeit the season, but there's no reason to risk serious injury for the young talent at this point.
  8. On a fortunate note, the Cubs have off-days each of the next 3 weeks. On the down side, each comes after 6-game blocks, so they'd need either 5 starters anyway, or one of Demp-Z-Garza would have to go on short rest twice.
  9. Dempster, Zambrano, Garza, pray for rain?
  10. The Baltimore Orioles have a 1.00 team ERA and no shutouts through 4 games.
  11. Apparently, the problem is he can't stay in school because of his grades. Somehow this is Weber's fault.
  12. Boston won tonight, so the Bulls can't clinch the 1 seed Thursday. However, a win Thursday clinches a finish no worse than the 2 seed.
  13. Unfortunately, tournament results have little bearing on how good a team really is overall. The guy that voted UConn third was probably the most correct of any of them.
  14. Walks: Ramirez, Pena, Fukudome, Colvin? K's: Soto, Hill...Ramirez? EDIT: Oh, and Russell hasn't struck out this year, since his only AB was today.
  15. May the floodgates now open for the next...20 games.
  16. Also, if the Bulls win tonight, Philly beats Boston, Milwaukee beats Miami tomorrow, and the Bulls beat Boston Thursday, that wraps up the 1 seed.
  17. Oh, and go Atlanta.
  18. Yeah, seriously. 7 dollars a beer now.
  19. Other than the HR to Roberts, he was absolutely on cruise control. He had the whole D-backs lineup off balance. That's why it was so odd when the trainer came out after no noticeable difference (aside from the walk, his only walk of the day).
  20. Also odd (but expected) that the only players that didn't see time in the game were Soto, Pena, Marmol, Wood and Grabow.
  21. Well, that was a weird game to be at. Hope Cashner's ok, didn't really see anything wrong when he pitched. Many of the fans were screaming bloody murder at Russell batting, but there wasn't much else to be done there. Only 2 other pitchers available, and I think Quade did the best he could with the hand dealt him today. Bad luck that Cashner was out in the 6th after pitching so well. Obvious that Samardzija would be the first guy out of the pen before the 8th, and it really hurt that Mateo couldn't find the plate.
  22. If DeWitt can't hit and can't field, what is his purpose in the lineup? Is there really going to be a need for a "Free DeWitt" campaign? Or do you personally just latch on to the worst player on the roster every year for kicks?
  23. But what is the actual discussion? Ticket sales or attendance? You don't know in advance that it might be cold, windy and rainy other than it's likely to be cold, windy and rainy in April. That there are tickets available for these games is the story, although one I'm not the slightest bit surprised at. Last week they were projecting Monday to be the worst conditions of any day in the opening week. Ticket sales are obviously a separate issue, but attendance was likely affected by the weather forecast. Coupled with the opponent and the game time, yesterday's game was a hard sell for the casual fan. Secondary market is awful right now.
  24. Yea day games on a Mon, Tues, or Weds haven't happened at home for quite a while. Usually Mon-Weds are night games, and Thurs-Sun are day games when playing at home. In April, most if not all the weekday games are day games.
