  1. Looking at rings as an individual achievement in a team sport is pointless and short-sighted, no matter what the team sport is (even baseball, which is as individual as a team sport can be).
  2. The thing nobody mentions, though, is that nobody has a better than average track record on game winning shots. It's part of the nature of the shot. Even if LeBron was more easily recognizable as the best player the previous couple years, he's still the best player this year, with Howard a shade below and Wade a shade below that (and a close cluster of players from 4-11 that also includes Rose, rabid Bulls fans).
  3. None of the 2 worst teams in the NBA have won the draft lottery since 2004 (Orlando), and only once since than have one of the 4 worst teams won it (2009 Clippers). 2005 - Bucks (6th worst) 2006 - Raptors (5th worst) 2007 - Blazers (6th worst) 2008 - Bulls (9th worst) 2009 - Clippers (3rd worst) 2010 - Wizards (5th worst) Since the draft lottery began in 1985, only four teams that actually had the worst record won the lottery (1988 Clippers, 1990 Nets, 2003 Cavs, 2004 Magic).
  4. Believe it or not, the draft lottery is tonight. Here are the teams' lottery chances: 1. Minnesota: 25% 2. Cleveland: 19.9% 3. Toronto: 15.6% 4. Washington: 11.9% 5. Sacramento: 7.6% 6. Utah (from NJ): 7.5% 7. Detroit: 4.3% 8. Cleveland (from LAC): 2.8% 9. Charlotte: 1.7% 10. Milwaukee: 1.1% 11. Golden State: 0.8% 12. Utah: 0.7% 13. Phoenix: 0.6% 14. Houston: 0.5%
  5. James Posey was the Heat who clotheslined Kirk. Wasn't a clothesline, it was a premeditated free-safety hit in the open floor. It was the dirtiest play I've ever witnessed live in the NBA, and considering I watched Rajon Rondo a few years later that is saying something. Yeah, it was Deng he clotheslined.
  6. As to why game 1 was huge, teams that lose game 1 at home have won the series 47% of the time (and that includes twice last round!)
  7. Since the first round went to a 7 game series nine years ago, the team with home court advantage has won 76% of the time. After winning game 1, the team with home court advantage has won the series 87% of the time.
  8. Oh man, I hope Spoelstra tries the small lineup again. The Heat have played 4 different lineups in 4 games against the Bulls and have been outrebounded in all of them. Anthony generally starts because he does one thing extremely well: help defense. On the flip side, he's a lousy post defender, rebounder, and offensive player. Their best hope at this point by keeping the same lineup is that James and Wade will try to create more FT opportunities and get the Bulls bigs in foul trouble (particularly Gibson, who is a bit prone to it).
  9. They are just 4th in the NL in SLG. They get a huge amount of singles, though. Far too much of their OBP/SLG is single-based. Not enough walking, not enough XBH.
  10. How funny is it that Cavs fans this week are almost universally rooting for Boozer?
  11. LeBron and Wade combined for 33 points last night, which was the second lowest combined total they've had all year. On November 22, they combined for 28 points against Indiana in a 16 point home loss (Wade scored 3 on 1 for 13 shooting from the floor and 1 for 5 shooting from the line).
  12. The NBA had a contingency plan set up in case the Hawks sent it to game 7. If they had, the Heat/Bulls series would have started Wed-Fri-Sun, but since the Bulls closed out Atlanta in 6, it's now just Sun-Wed-Sun. This also allows the Western finals to catch up.
  13. Thibs adjusts to the Heat's defense in the 4th by calling a play the Bulls hadn't run at all in the postseason prior, and ran just 3 times in the regular season: http://nbaplaybook.com/2011/05/16/a-late-game-twist-from-chicago/
  14. Is it? Is it of "note?" Boozer and Gibson will guard Bosh, just as they did during the 3 regular season matchups and I suspect, like in the 3 reg season matchups, Thibs will employ his standard defense and challenge the non-basketball mega gods to beat them. Not that I'm some basketball sage. I just, you know, watch the games and pay attention. Apparently you have some weird issue with me, but hey, you were right.
  15. Wonder how many besides tonight have been post-Jordan. That was the first time post-Jordan. Bulls also improved to 17-5 all time in the playoffs against the Heat.
  16. The Heat have allowed a playoff opponent to get 19+ offensive boards eight times in their playoff history. Five of those have been the Bulls.
  17. Stats of the night: Miami only had 10 transition points, and 8 of them were in the first quarter. They also ran 14 isolation offensive sets, 8 of which were in the third quarter, all of which combined resulted in 2 points.
  18. Also of note, the Bulls defensive strategy was interesting, basically letting Boozer (or Gibson) deal with Bosh 1 on 1, and keeping everyone else focused on stopping both Wade and James, under the assumption that even if Bosh went off (which he did), Bosh alone wouldn't win them the game.
  19. They shot 37.5% from 3, too. Also, Rose had one turnover in the last 44 minutes. Still, for the Bulls to win by 21 you'd think the Heat would have had to play terrible or the Bulls would have had to shoot lights out...and neither happened (OK, the Bulls shot 48% from 3 point range, but 42% from the field overall). Bulls shooting 48% from 3 doesnt surprise me with the looks they were getting out there. Seemed like almost all the 3s were wide open Most of it was because Wade was practically non-existent tonight. Which, of course, probably won't happen the rest of the series.
  20. They shot 37.5% from 3, too. Also, Rose had one turnover in the last 44 minutes. 21. And because I was curious...that was only Miami's third worst loss of the year. They lost by 30 in San Antonio and by 28 in Denver.
  22. Miami shot nearly 50% from the field, perfect from the line, Bosh went for 30/9, Rose was inefficient and had 4 TOs...and the Bulls won by 21.
  23. It would also be nice if Garza could have even average luck (and/or defense).
  24. If that happens again, they may as well fine Cuban a couple mil in advance and not bother televising the series. EDIT: Also, how does it feel to be the only team left that's beaten the Bulls this year?
